Re: ccleaner new version

Hope Williamson <isepic@...>

Oh man, I broke my main system Friday trying to get rid of the evil thing that is Avast! To make a long story short, I was trying to stop it from starting up so I could do the manual uninstall. I went into MSConfig in order to do that and instead of disabling just the Avast services, somehow I managed to disable everything.

I used to use MSConfig when it was just the list of programs starting up and then a way to stop them. Well now it still gives you the list but then it says either enable all or disable all.

I would take issue with you about your .ini file. If i run that with ccleaner it will remove all the mailto links in the registry, so nothing will use my default mail client when i click on a lingk to an email address. I've put that all back as default now. Also, I have also made the cookies line remove avast cookies.

OK the fact that its multi platform makes me think that its not been made with any API in mind at all, and this is a worry.

However they do say some things about a web interface for it, so I did wonder if one might be able to control it like that in some way. Obviously I've not tried it as I've only just heard of it, but being open source and one supposes it has a forum and probably some email addresses for queries, your questions about the accessibility are probably better directed there
Apart from Mozilla who do attempt to make their code specific to the operating system and hence its API I have not had much luck with these sort of programmes in the past, sadly.

Media library front ends are notoriously odd and most of those used on home entertainment systems tend to be touch screen or graphic based.

It could be that the so called screenreader is some kind of self voicing interface written similar to the way SpeakOn works.
If its not installing then maybe its something to raze with the authors.

Re: A bug to repport: NVDA works harder in Windows Explorer for some users.

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

What they need to do I think is firstly find out the build number of their windows. Make sure all add ons are off in nvda.
Set debug as the logging level in the prefs.
Now try the problem, and when things return to normal, restart nvda and start the run box.
type%temp% and enter. In that folder should be the old nvda log, renamed with old in the name!!
Get that into a text editor and have a look at it around the time when the problem happened. Hint its more likely to be near the end as you restarted nvda.
It might show that there is watchdog activity, and phrases like frozen in stack etc. If they then make an account on github, and follow the links to new issue in the nvda section there is a template to fill out and you can either paste in the text file or upload it to the site
If they would rather let you post it here, then do so, but we do need to know the details of the machines and the version of windows in use as there are people here who will know the foibles of each version and probably ve able to guess what might be going on.
I have to say I've had little issues with Winamp in windows 7 and am not totally convinced the lock up etc is completely due to the task switching either, unless there is a lot of animation going on somewhere that needs to be stopped.

Re: NVDA PORTABLE

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

I do often think that one of the perennial problems for programmers is that of making an optimised version for all situations.
I do agree that browsers like the New Firefox is, in my view a backward step in accessibility, and also nvda though faster in it now than it was is also less fast on older browsers, not all but some.
Only the programmers might know why, but I suspect that decisions have to be made about what version of code is used for a given situation, and here it might be that things get slowed down.

I think it perfectly fair comment if you have limited access to modern versions of Windows, that when you find a working version of NVDA that you stay with it. After all I do still have some XP machines running the older versions and they are quite happy and why worry?

The fact is, time and tech do move on and so making something work is a constant catch up game, since we effectively get a complete new windows every half year, which personally I find ridiculous , but that is a whole other discussion for another place. Myself, just as with XP if it continues to suit my needs and does not die, I shall be using windows 7 until forced to change for my main machine for my charity work as it is after all the years of updates much more reliable than a brand new version of windows 10 every six months can ever be.

hi.
i always follow new features, changes and bug fixes in different
versions of nvda.
i believe nvda since its version 2017.3 and later, has focus on
improving windows ten support, microsoft edge, braille and quantum
versions of firefox which i dont need any of them.
i wished to use 2017.2 which has some important features for me, but
unfortunately it is slow in web browsers, and even two or three times
made my keyboard and explorer unusable and made me to forceably
shutdown my system using power key!
the only version that sutes my needs and i did not experience such
problems on it, both using windows xp (my favorite windows version
forever) and even testing with windows seven, is nvda version 2017.1.

i realy love it, very fast and responsive, without hang or making
keyboard and system unusable and i wish and decided to keep and use
nvda 2017.1 forever by the grace of God!

other features include automatic braille display detection, announcing
grammar errors in Chrome if exposed by web authors, support for BrailleNote
QT (my work), improved list of languages in NVDA's general settings panel,

How important is it for you to run a current version. While I don't

program current and improve accessibility in Windows 10. Therefore, you

I would also add, and this is from my personal experience. The portable version can access mor things when they rerunning in windows 7, than it can when they are on windows 10. This I think has to do with the greater use of UIA on 10, and hence non installed versions of nvda cannot always get access to the data, unless an old way of doing things already exists of course.

Brian,

Yes, absolutely, but exactly how one does this depends on what version of Office one is using.

For Word 2016:
* Select Graphic.
* Hit the Menu/Applications Key or SHIFT + F10, followed by A (Edit A lt Text)
* Select the Alt Text out of the dialog that appears then copy. It is the one and only text box that appears.

For Word 2010:
* Select Graphic.
* Hit the Menu/Applications Key or SHIFT + F10, followed by O (F o rmat Picture)
* In the format dialog that comes up, Alt Text is the last item in the list, once selected navigate to the Alt Text box to copy. There is a title and description box.

I do not know when "the split" in style occurred, so Word 2013 might follow either one of the above methods. I believe 2010 and older all use the method mentioned for 2010.

The problem is that the aggressive Avast people took over PiReform and I understand the old team were not particularly happy about this. In fact the malware was not bad, but I suspect was done deliberately by the disgruntled people who no doubt were getting the chop..
It has scanned OK and now they have at least given people the ability to turn off the snooping, at least we assume they have come clean completely as obviously the free version had to be subsidised by collecting metrics from the users.

The real power bits of ccleaner for me are the ability to look at browser add ons, and tasks and start up items and toggle them, also to see what system restore points are set and to remove old ones.

Not a big fan of products like CCleaner. In September of 2017, it was widely reported that the backdoor was being exploited to have malware implanted. And another report last December:

software.

Can you please provide a link to the latest portable version? I tried
Googling it and there were several links there, but I tried them all and
none of them seemed to work. I found the download button but when I
activate it it just clicks and shows a screen shot of the Ccleaner
itself but no download occurred on any of those links I found.

Thanks.

For those that want to know what is changed.

options/privacy needs to be reset because the preffs string is
different.

The only other thing I have done is clear out the version strings
that
existed in there and rebuilt the ics program version string data.

For all the rest, while you can get the slim installer now I have
portable it just works.

Things that have been changed include fixing the privacy setting
issues with extra info added for that option including more
datashheets for it.

The adjusting of the monitering so it says smart cleaning instead to
explain what it does.

If you turn off smart cleaning ccleaner shouldn't stay loaded at
startup anymore.

There is supposed to be a checkbox revamp and some more descriptions
but I have yet to see any change, and to be honest now that I can use
portable easily enough I don't know if I will ever go back to
installed ever again.

ccleaner

Hi.

The malware issue was only for a couple days, someone in the company had issues with them and so put malicious code in.

They took that seriously and handled it.

As for avast, ccleaner portable is what I would go for or slim.

To be honest once set right the only thing you miss from the installed coppy are the desktop and program shortcuts.

And from my descussion with ccleaner they are going to look at avast being in their installers.

Sadly, I have several friends saying that all cleaners ccleaner, etc are malware.

To avoid this they buy something like mcafee or norton.

Sadly we all know how bad those are.

Its what we have to remove from our computers.

I think ccleaner compaired to some is quite safe.

They are up front with what they install and you can use other things for installers or portable.

Not tried the latest but it normal does work. It might not work if you try it with a portable nvda though.

I use to view the summary report by pressing alt+tab after ccleaner announces 100 percent analyse button, but that does not seem to work.

E-mail is golden!!!

Thanks much! That worked like a champ! I bookmarked the page so as long
as the portable version is always on this page I can get newer versions
from now on. If they change the page with each new version, then it
won't work but I hope it will.

In my experience the portable is normally an older version to the installed one.

I also noticed something in an advert on filehippo yesterday, an advert for an Avast system cleaning utility. Could we be nearing the end of ccleaner now they belong to Avast as it seems half the universe now does?

By unwanted they mean avast anti virus, usually a couple of hours after you installed ccleaner. Then you need avastclear to get rid of it so it does not self install again later after you uninstall it.

Yes that new google format is really awful making search a multi search process. It used to be intuitive now it is awful, sadly other search engines seem to be going the same way.

Hi!
Thanks for the info below about CCleaner 5.46, with the Dropbox link to the new .ini file.
Talking of links, would it be possible to post one here where we can easily get the portable version of CCleaner, please? When my current portable version tells me there is an update, I'm taken to the Piriform site when I hit the "yes" button, and I can't find a download link for portable CCleaner there. Doing a Google search brings up different results every time, and the sites in the Google search results can be confusing anyway.
Thanks in advance for your reply.
Bye for now!
From Clare
