I wish it were as simple as this, but I'm glad to know this about a
keyboard such as yours. Some dummy (who shall remain nameless) turned
off the Toshiba audio, thinking it could just be re-enabled the same
way, but this didn't work. I finally figured out that the Windows
audio service must've been disabled at the point of disabling the
Toshiba audio, so things should work again when I get someone to go in
and enable that and check in the start page to be sure the other audio
stuff is enabled.

Thanks to everyone,

Nance

Sapi 5 of Espeak

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

OK I have now installed it but beware, its not as easy to get the variants as in nvda. I have had to import my voices after the fact. What you need to do before installing is find out where the voices you want are in nvda, and copy them from the v folder somewhere.

Now noting the file names when you install the espeak sapi five version you can add the voice names as the installer asks you to. you can have several. Do not worry that they do not exist yet. Once installed, go to the installed folder of the sapi 5 version find its v folder and copy the voices in. Then you can use nvdas voice selection to test them in the sapi 5 synth. Note that they do seem slower, but at least you can have the voice you like this way as those shipped with the package have had many of the ones nvda has cut, including my Quincy. bloody cheek"! I jest.
However put it back to the native espeak if you were using it.
Then in jaws select the profiles and the synth and hey presto in the list of voices is dear old Quincy which I can configure. of course in Jaws you can have all sorts of voices for all sorts of things. its all a bit overkill, but also it seems to work in other software that uses sapi 5 as well which was what I wanted to do.

Re: Problems using NVDA with a Java application

Radu Coravu <radu_coravu@...>

Hi Brian,

Thanks for pointing out there is a GitHub project for NVDA, I did not find out this information starting from NVDA's main web page so this is why initially I wrote on the mailing list.

The problem our Java-based application experiences with NVDA would be comparable to this:
Assume you are reading an HTML web page which has in the middle the main content and on the sides various commercials (or some additional information). These commercials (side information) auto update quite often without taking the keyboard focus. When such an update automatically occurs for the side information, instead of continuing reading the main HTML content where the keyboard focus is, NVDA would start reading the most recently updated side information.

Anyway I think I found a similar issue to what I'm experiencing on the GitHub project and I added my feedback to it:

https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/5989

github and some log fragments to show what is going on and a description

difficult for us as blind people who have never seen the program, to
visualise the needed responses of nvda, against what is actually
happening. I would however say that if the program is only useable with
a mouse and is visual, then some work around using hot keys inside the
application would seem to be the only way forward. java Access bridge

Subject: Re: [nvda] Problems using NVDA with a Java application

I've never tried this software, but why is this a problem? If something
changes, the screen reader is supposed to let the user know it changed.
NVDA is doing exactly what it's supposed to do, where's the problem?

Hi,

I'm a developer working to provide better accessibility in a
Java-based application called Oxygen XML Editor.
One of our end users uses our application with JAWS but he'd rather
use it with NVDA.
So I started to use our application with NVDA, I have to say it looks
like a better alternative, I even like the voice better.
There's one problem, our application has side views (see the attached
screenshot) and whenever I move the cursor in the text content the
"Outline" side view selects the appropriate node structure in its
internal tree. We do that without giving explicit focus to the Outline
view, but NVDA still reads the changes made in the Outline view
whenever I move the cursor in the main text area.

Is there a setting in NVDA to prohibit it to announce changes in
application components which are not keyboard focused?

I also reproduced the problem with a small Java application:

public static void main(String[] args) {
JFrame fr = new JFrame("AAA");
fr.setSize(500, 500);
JPanel panel = new JPanel(new GridBagLayout());
GridBagConstraints c = new GridBagConstraints();
c.gridy = 0;
c.gridx = 0;
JTree tree = new JTree();
JTextArea jt = new JTextArea("SOME\na\nb\nctext");
jt.addCaretListener(new CaretListener() {
@Override
public void caretUpdate(CaretEvent e) {
tree.setSelectionRow(e.getDot() % 4);
}
});
panel.add(jt, c);
c.gridy++;
panel.add(tree, c);

fr.getContentPane().add(panel, BorderLayout.CENTER);
fr.setVisible(true);
}
moving the caret in the text area also moves the selection in the tree
under it and sometimes NVDA reads the selection in the tree although
the focus is always in the text area.

Radu

Hi Quentin,

I installed nvda 2018.3 rc1.  So far it is working like a charm.  Cutos to the development team.

Hi everyone,

NV Access has just released NVDA 2018.3rc1. This is a Release Candidate, meaning that unless any critical bugs are found, this will be identical to the final 2018.3 release.

Highlights of this release include automatic detection of many Braille displays, support for new Windows 10 features including the Windows 10 Imoji input panel, and many other bug fixes. Read the full release announcement and download the release candidate from: https://www.nvaccess.org/post/nvda-2018-3rc1-released/

Kind regards

Quentin.

Re: NVDA’s compatibility with the Braille Me Braille display from NBP?

Christo de Klerk

I think that if you look at it now, you will find that a huge amount of work has been done on it. We started importing and distributing them here in South Africa recently and people are very happy with the machine.

Remember that the Orbit itself went through a disastrous launch and was withdrawn from the market for months. These teething problems happen with new stuff.

But to return on topic, the add-on for NVDA provided by Innovision makes the device quite compatible with NVDA and I believe that will be improved further with time. Innovision is very responsive to suggestions.

Christo

The dots would not go all the way down, and it felt like reading a mix of good braille and badly erased braille. Unless this has changed? Also, some characters that show up in braille or brf files and brl files from some braille translation software would not even display on the braille me.

Hi!
Using it right now with no ill effects. Win 7 64 bit, NVDA installed
(not portable).
Braille display autodetection worked successfully for a Handy Tech
device. Is it expected that if I unplug and plug back in the Braille
device it should also autodetect? Because that didn't work. In other
words, autodetection sees the device on startup of NVDA but not when
it later appears on the system. Will test later on Win 10.
Best,
Felix

Is the Braille Me from NBP that you are referring to the same as the Braille Me from Innovision in India? If so, then yes, they have created an add-on for it which makes it work very well with NVDA.

If you are interested, I have created an e-mail list for the BrailleMe to which you can subscribe by sending a blank e-mail to:

Anyone have used, or knows if the Braille Me display from National Braille Press, is compatible at this time with NVDA? If so, what’s the process for this because my student hooks her up to her Windows10 computer via USB; does NVDA+N to get into the NVDA menu; P for Preferences, and B for Braille. She gets to the list of compatible Braille displays, but the Braille Me doesn’t appear to be within! Where could she download the drivers, or what might the problem be? She was told by the folks at npb THAT nvda IS COMPATIBLE WITH THE BEFORE-MENTIONED DISPLAY. THANKS FOR ANY INFO YOU GUYS COULD GIVE ON THE MATTER.
