You know… Someone was able to crack this nut once and while it’s a bummer that Webvisum was dumped, it apparently wasn’t impossible to put together the necessary tools to develop it. Other then the Accessible Apps guy who was charging something like $3 a month for a CAPCHA solution, no one else has really given a shot to recreate a similar one. Sure it sucks that you have to maybe pay for something that can be argued should be free, but those are the breaks. That or another intrepid developer can invest their time and money and skill into an accessible CAPTCHA solver out of the kindness of their heart until something’s actually done about the inaccessibility. Even if you pay, just deduct it from your taxes.

That said though, I can’t recall the last time I really had an issue with a CAPTCHA. Everything’s the I’m not a robot or audio option for the most part now.

Gene,

God only knows why your general stance is to say "black" when anyone else says "white," but it's as annoying as hell.

I got an invitation from a member here in 2016.  I went through the registration process.  That's where the process stopped.  Nothing comes back.

If anyone, and I do mean anyone, can complete a new account registration for Webvisum there are a very great many who would love to know how to do so.  I haven't seen a single example of success in several years and know that my own, following their instructions and getting an invitation from a member, went into the great bit bucket in the sky.

Returns at Amazon.com don't work with screenreaders

Ervin, Glenn

Hi,

I’m on a Jaws list at home, and I sent this issue to this list, because I could not check an item for returns to Amazon.com, and no matter what I did, it would not work, and that is twice I have had to call their customer service about this to return an item, and they told me that the disability department will be notified, but nothing ever happens.

I tried it with both Jaws and NVDA and three different browsers.

I am more proficient with Jaws, so I’d like to know if maybe there is something I don’t know about NVDA that could have done this for me.

Here’s part of the thread explaining the problem, there is my message and one or two replies of Jaws users that could not do the same thing…

Hi,

Jaws 2018, Windows 7 & IE.

I need to return an item, but I cannot because I cannot check the item.

I have moved to it with the X key and enter and space bar don't check it.

I tried insert + F5 and moved to it, and entering does not check it.

I try the continue button every time, in case it is checking it but not

saying

checked.

I have tried the number pad mouse click and that does not work.

Any other ideas?

have you tried tabbing away and back to the checkbox.

sometimes the status of the box will be spoken if you do this after you

press enter or space bar on it.

have you tried tabbing around on the page after the virtual cursor is turned

off.

sometimes if you start at the top of the screen and keep tabbing you will

land on the check box, edit box, combo box etc.

What do you mean when you say iTunes is the only way to update things? I never use iTunes to update anything. I just do it over the air. It is the only way to make a fully encrypted backup however. At least as far as I am aware.

Well they say its an nvda issue, I wouldn't mind except itunes is the only way to update things, saying with the death of the store on windows, unless I use it for podcasts and such on windows which I probably won't there is almost no reason for me to ever use it except if I need to store a full backup, and I know a program like contacts backup will work for contacts, the rest is on icloud and the storage rates are fair enough.

It does appear that the itunes universal and the itune pc app have the same interface but the fact is I do wander if the itunes app was accessible in the first place, I never needed to check.

However, while I will soldier on with this, this latest issue may push me off of ios, not because its quite accessible but if I can't use the windows configuration and sync software properly then if it goes pair shaped then I have no chance at all.

On the other hand, with android the chance that my software to do things from windows is going to be accessible is probably low to and I know where to get apple stuff and it is only 1 single system to learn which is probably why I will still end up using it, as long as I have an old device, this latest issue is starting to make me think twice about putting all my stuff in the apple environment.

I have family now with apple devices with a lot of stuff, once your stuff is in apple its going to have to stay there and you will have to continue to use it, and while I won't get the latest something I am seriously thinking on my next device being with the competition.

To be honest if I didn't care for apps and as long as I have a 32 bit unit about I can continue using symbian phones for the rest of my life but there are so many reasons to actually get up and use apps these days.

You have to get used to the ribbon thing, but it is not an accessibility issue per se. It’s not like not being able to see the main window of a program. That’s a showstopper. The ribbon thing is just re-learning. Not fun. But it’s not in accessible.

The trouble with using their access page is that you will get a cookie that is a pain to remove.
If you are happy with the access pages for your only Amazon page option, then going to the access page is okay, but I dislike the lack of detail on the access pages, and once you go there, you will never get back to a regular amazon page again, no matter how hard you try.
You will have to use a different browser or remove the access page cookie they put into your browser.
I wasted many hours figuring this out because no matter what I did, I could not ever get a normal Amazon page after going to the access site.

No, it's not addware.  There is a setting in chrome that allows those popups about tech news, and my son knows which one it is, but I personally haven't been able to find it in my copy of chrome, so I need to ask him again which setting it is to turn it off.  The news titles pop up in the system notifications area on the pc.  The setting in chrome turns those pop ups off, so they won't do that anymore.  I've looked through my settings, and couldn't find which setting was causing it, but I'll ask him again and repost here after I get it turned off.

Those don't bother me as much as the flippin' login to my apple drive that keeps popping up every half hour or so, which seems also to be triggered by my first opening of chrome after a reboot.  I'd really like to turn those off.  I'll log in to the silly thing when I want to use it, not until then, so stop asking me already.

Has anyone else had ads popping up when Chrome is open?

After I close Chrome, I have to bring up the task manager and close several more instances of it to keep the pop-up ads from happening.

Chrome loads itself with multiple instances for more stability, each instance for a different process.

But I have gone through settings and seemingly turned off anything related to pop-ups and notifications, and it still happens.

Thanks.

Given the increasing popularity of Chrome among blind users, this article from Kim Komando is important.  The Chrome designers are implementing a change which is very bad for security, dumbing down the product for asthetics.  Let's hope the protests from security experts and others cause them to remember that they are not supposed to do harm, as part of their founding principles.

Then I went to the fileHippo website and got iTunes 12.8, the older july 2018 version installed it. I told it to never check for updates. Now iTunes works again. I'd love a means of converting a PDF or a midi file into a text from which I can determine the notes ... the durations are less important for me since I can remember how the pieces sound.

As far as I know, the only way to increase the number of keystrokes available from Brailliant devices are:

1 - Manually add those keystrokes using the Input gestures dialog, found through NVDA, Preferences menu;

2 - Someone make an addon to increase the number of keystrokes available;

3 - Humanware or NVDA team, if they can have a Brailliant to use, increase the number of keystrokes available...

Adobe Acrobat vs. QRead

kelby carlson

I know that QRead is specifically designed for the blind, but are there any advantages it has in reading PDFs that make it significantly better than Adobe Acrobat with NVDA?

Re: Softwares to compose music for the blind

I have a sort-of similar question. I used to play piano in my sighted days but mever memorised any of the music, prefering to read the score as I played. Now I can't read a score I can't remember much of those pieces.

I have PDF scores of a lot of piano music and wonder if there is any way that something like Muse Score could open a PDF and I could somehow figure out what notes are where? I'm thinking of chords with three or more notes across both hands, my ear being unable to figure them out by listening to a recording.

I'd love a means of converting a PDF or a midi file into a text from which I can determine the notes ... the durations are less important for me since I can remember how the pieces sound.

It's funny, I just asked a sighted friend for help with three notes in Chopin's first ballade which I was struggling to remember just this morning!

Thanks for any ideas (and no, I never learned to read Braille music)

Giles

Re: Automatic Reading of Footnotes in Word

Giles Turnbull

thanks, Sociohack, that has helped me a lot ... I've been trying to figure out how to get any comments to be displayed in line with the original text and by saving the document as a PDF and then opening that PDF in QRead it does the trick perfectly!

I'm headed to university next week and expect most of my tutors to put comments into any docs I submit, so I needed to know this! :)

Hi, the protocol is Humanware, I'm using it via USB, as for the commands, there's nothing I can find other than some basic commands which are quite limited.

Just some questions:

1 - What protocol are you using? Humanware, OpenBraille or via Bluetooth?
2 - If you are using OpenBraille or Bluetooth , NVDA will recognize the Braille display automatically.

3 - Did you checked the tables of commands for your display in NVDA User Guide?

Re: Softwares to compose music for the blind

Damien Garwood

Hi there,
It depends what you want to do.
If you want to work with MIDI to compose and produce music, then I can recommend QWS for basic work, or Reaper if you need a more advanced DAW.
On the other hand, if you want to work with printing scores and so on, then I'm afraid I'll have to let somebody else answer that.
Hope that helps.
Cheers,
Damien.

Hello folks

As the old version of skype stopped running, even the shortcuts that we used to use aren’t any longer used for other new versions.

If there is someone that is using one of the latest skype version for pc. I would be very greatful if he send me the version number and the shortcuts to use it please, I really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance

One tricky thing I find with Emoji is that different platforms have different icons for them so things can look quite different.  Sometimes I hear NVDA describe an emoji and my first reaction is "Really? Is THAT was that thing is meant to be?"

Hi Paul,

Press WINDOWS+. or WINDOWS+; to open the emoji panel, then either right
arrow through the items in the current section, press tab to move to the
sections and arrows to choose a new section, or start typing to search for
emoji, eg "cake"
🍰, "Smiling" or "firetruck" 🚒 (as with many other
search fields, you don't necessarily have to type the full thing - I typed
"fire" to narrow the results down to a handful to get the fire truck).

Press ENTER to insert your chosen emoji, and escape to close the panel.

Regards

Quentin.

best forum members,

I have downloaded the nvda 2018.3 rc1 and put it into use.

but I am not entirely positive, there is still something here and there.

Like, I have already experienced a number of times, that I used the

emoticon add-on, often it goes well but suddenly without any apparent

reason it gets stuck.

With alt tab I can then go back to the text where I wanted to place an

emoji.

but it is not going well. Only after I have restarted nvda again can I

place an emoticon again.

are there more people who have the same problem?

with nvda 2018.2 I did not have these problems.

do I have to update the emoticon add-on?

is it available?

with a curious greeting

paul otter
