That add on has been broken for months now. I haven 't heard of any attempt to fix it.
Try Q Translate: https://quest-app.appspot.com/ It is relatively accessible.

NVEDA sort of half locking up when working with firefox
Jacob Kruger
Had firefox 43 here, since before new version of
webvisum, you couldn't install un-signed add-ons, but, also now just upgraded
firefox to 46, and this was since NVDA 2016.1 and 2016.2 RC1 both seemed to be
locking up at times, while working in firefox, with various sites'
content.
Have also tried turning off/on the F123 add-on, in
case it and NVDA wre interfering with each other, but, doesn't seem to make a
difference.
Could also maybe try uninstalling both F123 and
webvisum add-ons, in case, their form of interaction, etc. might be causing
hassles, but, thought might as well ask here if anyone has ideas on what to
try?
And, when I say locking up, at times, it won't help
alt-tabbing away from firefox to another app, since NVDA will stay quiet, but,
funny enough what seems to help the quickest is to launch narrator, using
windows key + enter key, since this is on my windows 10 64 bit
machine.
Do you think there might be something useful in the
NVDA log - NVDA + F1 right after NVDA starts speaking again?
Alternatively, any other thoughts/suggestions on
what to try get rid of this - besides browsing web content often enough, my
primary job is as a web developer, so I have to spend a lot of time
testing/trying out various bits of my own code output in a browser, and firefox
is my favourite for that part of it thus far, although I do, at times use both
google chrome and IE11 - that one crashes on it's own way too often to be any
form of feasible alternative, but, that's probably due to it not really being
meant to be used under windows 10 as such?

Sometimes this can be due to some invisible window being present. I used to get this a lot with a particular anti virus product which I don't think is still made.

It hadd some kind of proxy server sitting over the program and the internet connection and when it put messages up, it left an apparently open full screen window behind. Mouse users never saw it of course as if you click the item it goes through, but with a screenreader you find that this is not possible of course. Maybe the spam program you are using?? I've never tried it. However sometimes some browsers can end up with the current window not detected which gives the same error, indeed, Outlook express can do this when you switch identities, but in this case you cannot get focus back without restarting Outlook Express. This program issue when used with nvda has been around for years but is so unpredictable its hard to troubleshoot, and may not be fixable. Brian bglists@... Sent via blueyonder. Also, if you haven't done so, trying Firefox on
many sites you use might produce surprising results. You might find that
Firefox is faster on enough sites that you might want to use it as your main
browser. I'm not saying you will. But I'm saying that you may and
that that was my experience.
Also, Firefox has more plugins and one or two
features you may value once you try them such as the document reader feature in
the view menu. When you are on a page that contains an article, you will
find article view in the view menu. Press enter on it and see what
happens. You will automatically leave article view, as I recall, when you
open another page. It eliminates a great deal of extraneous text on pages
with articles.

In my experience, Teraterm has been working the best for me and that's not always perfect. This is when using something like VI in OpenWRT, for example, which for the most part, lets me move about through the files good enough to edit them. Something that works much better though is to use WinSCP to get access to your server and use notepad to make your changes. It also makes moving around through the directory structure much quicker, that's if you don't wish to do things through the terminal. I know at one time, NVDA had gotten worse when trying to use applications like Teraterm, but as a few months ago, it was working okay for me.

Hi, Jolene!
From the time of the existence of Firefox I usually used it for
my daily basis even way back before that I worked with a USA based
telcos , since then I used Firefox and hardly to experience any
trouble like in terms of security or any form of intrusion from my
device which I believe that this mentioned Firefox is a
commendable and doable. Typically, the security will came out if
you installed added toolbar or a form of malware would
significantly affects the performance and function of ones
browsers that you are using. But, if you are pretty much confident
that nothing could harm you so I would suggest or prefer the one
browsers that best fit for your needs. And, for the Edge browser
for windows 10, it was indeed or sometimes inaccessible for many
screen readers not like with the one you mentioned. Edge was
pretty new browsers to consider and it is still under the process
of developing in order to make accessible, and, yes there are some
sites could loads and play but, again it really depends on the
sites you've visited or working with. Robert mendoza On 5/31/2016 9:26 AM, Jolene Cardenas

Re: Web Browsers' Security And Compatibility With NVDA
Just to emphasize what's already been said, IE11 is not any more prone to security issues (in the big picture) than any other contemporary browser is. IE11 is shipped with Windows 10, though Microsoft doesn't do anything to make that apparent, and is being maintained and will continue to be so at least until MS-Edge comes somewhere close to having the feature set that all contemporary browsers do (and it's not anywhere close at the moment). You could always try Chrome if you wish as well. There are lots of folks who now do. It really drives me crazy when help desks "suggest" that people use the familiar because it is familiar to them rather than figure out what's actually going wrong and fixing it. I don't mind this sort of suggestion as a stopgap measure, but if something isn't working with IE11, Chrome, and Firefox (at a minimum) these days then it's not coded correctly. -- I worry a lot. . . I worry that no matter how cynical you become it's never enough to keep up. ~ Trudy, in Jane Wagner's "Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe"

Re: Web Browsers' Security And Compatibility With NVDA
Quentin Christensen
Hi Jolene, That original article you referred to is aimed a bit of scaremongering for article views, inside though, it does actually say: "Users should upgrade to the latest version of Internet Explorer to ensure they are always up-to-date with the latest security patches and updates. ... "Internet Explorer 11 is the last version of Internet Explorer, and will continue to receive security updates, compatibility fixes, and technical support on Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10."" So Internet explorer IS still supported, but you have to be using the latest version of IE available for your platform. In terms of Edge, Microsoft are working on accessibility but we would still recommend using an alternate browser for the time being. NVDA's support for Chrome has improved so this is now also an alternative. For a main browser, I still use Firefox, but it's worth having a couple available as you have found some web pages work better with one browser over another. If your uni recommends using IE then it may be that you will get the best experience on their site with that browser and as long as you are up to date with patches etc, you should be safe to keep using that. Kind regards Quentin. On Tue, May 31, 2016 at 11:26 AM, Jolene Cardenas <joe.haiku@...> wrote: Hello everyone, --

Re: Web Browsers' Security And Compatibility With NVDA
Gene
If you use Internet Explorer only on the Hadley
site, you won't have a meaningful increase in risk. The Hadley site, as
any site, could be hacked but it's very unlikely. And in addition, I
haven't seen anything about the kind of high security risks with IE11 I saw last
year. Evidently, they were corrected in patches and the level of risk,
though it may be higher than Firefox, is evidently much lower than at the high
points last year. I'm not making a judgment about which browser is safer
over time or over all. I'm saying that if Firefox is safer and if you only
use Internet Explorer on that one site, your risk hardly increases.
Also, what version of Internet Explorer are you
using? Such articles as you cite dealt with the end of support for
versions of Internet Explorer lower than version 11. If you are using
IE11, those articles don't apply to you.
If you are using a lower version, why?

Re: Virtual Recorder
Gene
it isn't clear what you did. Did you only
record using a microphone? Many laptops have monaural microphone recording
jacks. If you recorded something like an Internet Stream you hear in
stereo, you should get a stereo recording.
Your sound card may only record a microphone
monaurally and purchasing microphones alone may not solve the problem because
there is a good chance the jack you plug the microphone into now is a monaural
jack.
You may well have to purchase an external USB sound
card and make sure it has a stereo microphone jack.

Brian, when I had my Dell laptop (which was a Windows 7-based system), it recorded everything in stereo, but when I got this Asus laptop, it records everything in mono in Virtual Recorder. I'm beginning to think that perhaps some brands of laptop are built for stereo recording, while others aren't. I could be wrong, though. Perhaps I should try Berhinger out to see if it would do for me what Virtual Recorder won't do. And Gene, I tried recording sound with Virtual Recorder in both stereo and mono formats, and both recordings came out in mono. Sounds to me like I may have to invest in a pair of microphones in order to record sound in stereo! Thanks so much for your feedback, though. aloha, Jolene. |
