Re: New problem

Brian's Mail list account

Hi you cannot send attaches here or images. In any case as most of the devs are blind its better to actually put the text in the email manually or ocr it before sending.
I have noticed an issue on and off for some time where the machine after an update does not reboot and displays a message about not being able to write to a file. Hitting esc and then restarting nvda fixes it. It only seems to happen on machines with ssd drives in my experience and is due to windows being too slow to let go of the log file on the previous session so when nvda starts and attempts to rename it to old, it fails or the new log cannot be created as the log is tied up being renamed, one or the other.
Other issues are the inability to write the desktop icon due to a protection setting in windows being on.

Hi Q,

I installed the new 18.3.1 version at work on a Windows 10 laptop. Nothing to do with Firefox this time.
As part of the installation I got the following message as per the image.
I assume this will cause some problems with speech along the way.

Re: NVDA saying "Less Than" before everything I read and do

Brian's Mail list account

Really? I know that the < and > symbols have been moved to a different punctuation setting, and I put them back down again as I found it annoying on quoted emails etc to hear things like this, also if you really are going into maths you can easily set the setting to all.
However apart form that, I give up!

How do I stop N V D A from doing this? Seems it just started. Typing,
I type any character, "Less than character." List on desktop or
folder, "less than" before each item. E-mail messages, "less than"
before each part of message list. Advice, please!

Thanks,

Hi Nance
Have you checked to see at what level the punctuation level is set? Sounds like it might be set to most

Hi Mary,

If you are using a 64-bit version of Windows, I would generally use 64-bit versions of software, where available.  You should be able to use 32-bit versions of most things (I think 7Zip is one that comes to mind that doesn't work), and now that we have released NVDA 2018.3.1 you should be ok to keep using the 32-bit version of Firefox if you choose.

In any case, do please let me know if you have any more problems.

Re: NVDA 2018.3.1rc1 fix for Firefox crashing

Quentin Christensen

Hi Gene,

We have now released NVDA 2018.3.1 which supersedes the rc build (aside from the version number it's identical).  We've updated the release announcement and links: https://www.nvaccess.org/post/announcing-the-release-of-nvda-2018-3/

The menu thing sounds like something else, so it was almost certainly there before, but something to look into now.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for the update.  It looks like there definitely is something going on.  Just to double check that you have rebooted since last night, and have you tried restarting NVDA with addons disabled?

One suggestion that someone had was to try "refreshing" firefox:

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/refresh-firefox-reset-add-ons-and-settings

They were using a 64-bit version but it could be worth trying still.

Failing all that, if you could go to about:crashes in Firefox and get me a crash ID , and possibly an NVDA log, I can keep investigating.

Quentin.

Re: firefox crash with NVDA 2018.3

Mary Otten

Thanks, quinton. I think I really should update to the 64-bit version, since the reason I originally got the 32-bit version seems no longer relevant. I would like to replace my 32-bit version of the extended release that I think his version 60, with the 64-bit version. But I haven’t done that yet. I have to admit to being not all that great on windows after a several your absence doing mostly Mac and moving from XP to Windows 10. Slow learner.

Hi Quentin

I just went to install nvda 2018.3 over the 2018.3.1 rc1 release and it said the stable version of NVDA 2018.3 was older so i stopped. I am guessing there will be a update of nvda to nvda 2018.3.1 coming when there is more reports of it been fixed?

Re: NVDA 2018.3.1rc1 fix for Firefox crashing

hurrikennyandopo ...

Hi quentin

Just testing out the snap shot with a portable version and also done it as a installer version of nvda 2018.3.1 rc1

At present i am only using a portable version of fire fox and it works nicely on the 32 bit version of fire fox 32 bit number 62 of fire fox with both versions of nvda.

Just downloaded the fire fox installer version which is 32 bit and it seems to be working correctly as in been able to surf.

I do not know if the following is related but when you press the alt key to get into the menus some times it works and when you get into it it seems to be sluggish when going through the other menus. Other times it is quick to do it but it is the pressing of the alt key which seems to work or not. It may of been there before?

I will test some more later on today but the later nighter for Mick looks as though it has paid off so far for the 32 bit version of fire fox.

The fire fox version said they were 32 bit versions under the help section.

I will also upgrade the installer version of nvda to the stable release to see if it comes back.

Re: contact you off list

Well, this behavior is clearly a bug and this topic just popped up on the beta group:
Footer variations in individual emails
This behavior is starting to be noticed by many, and is apparently as new to them as it is to me.  "The Standard Footer Collection" was a fixture in every individual e-mail message from Groups.io, regardless of group, until this peculiarity recently appeared.

I still do not have an official response on the support ticket.

Hi Brice,

With the refreshing problem, is it just your home page, or does it happen on other pages as well (Google, Wikipedia, NV Access, etc)?  Does it happen if you use say Narrator or an older build of NVDA?

If it is specific to NVDA, a copy of your NVDA log could be helpful.  And all the other usual things to try like restarting NVDA with add-ons disabled etc.

Quentin.

Hi

For your windows version in the search box type winver then prss the enter key and then it will give you the windows version number.

For fire fox if it loads have a look under the help then about section of fire fox. If it loads nicely i am guessing it is the 64 bit version and it should say it in the about section.

If it crashes i am guessing it is the 32 bit version.

Yes this also gels with my feelings about people not knowing about the beta testing or not doing any, so never see the issue till the main update. What is needed is a post encouraging more people to try the code while its being developed, even as a portable version, so they still have their installed copy. That way a lot more feedback could be gotten and the other reason why it might have not been spotted is the generally unfriendly nature of the reporting system and the  fact that there is nobody who actually feeds back in the list if a gather problem has been confirmed to keep people alerted of what the state of play is.

Quentin and all

Have you seen people who use Firefox 32 bit in Windows 10 32 bit who report
that it works properly?  I suspect this is a general problem with that
combination but that since the number of people using that combination is
rather small and since the update has been out for only about a day, we
haven't gotten many reports, at least yet.
