Hi all,
Shortly after release of SPL add-on 18.10, a broadcaster reported an issue where Studio won’t play the first track after an encoder was connected to a streaming server. After some investigation, the problem was traced to wxPython 4 (NVDA 2018.3.x) where text output would fail under some circumstances (specifically, wxPython 4 is more strict about where timers can be invoked from).
Because this affects everyone (except for people using really old builds) who are using NVDA 2018.3.x, I’m going to release version 18.10.1 and 18.09.3-LTS for those on stable and longterm channels, respectively. For those using development snapshots, revision A of September 21st build will also be released.
Thanks. Cheers, Joseph

Dave, It is not necessary to donate. It is a request only. NVDA is free to all who need it. Donate when you can. The bottom of the NVDA menu has a button titled Donate. Very convenient when there is cash to do it. Luck Rick

Good Afternoon: I'm not concerned about Adobe Reader at this time. I'm more concerned about getting NVDA back to running. I'm running the tool to hopefully return the NVDA program on this machine. If not, how can you download a new version of NVDA without giving a donation at this time? I'm retired, so, don't have a lot of extra cash to give right now. Dave

Re: Web Browsers

There is another aspect to the problem I hadn't
considered in my first message. More sites now are using embedded
programs. I'm not sure how that fits into the discussion. The use of
dialogs, while not an embedded program, is an example of a new interface
that has been added to some web pages over the last few years. When you
open a dialog in a site, my experience, others may wish to comment, is that at
times, I need to turn browse mode off to work with it. I haven't seen many
but they seem inconsistent from my recollection about whether this is necessary
and I have seen some where you can have the controls read and not the
explanatory text in the dialog and some as I recall, I can cause everything to
be read. Sometimes, I can close a dialog with escape, sometimes only with
the close button.
As far as embedded programs are concerned, I don't
know how JAWS compares with NVDA as to their accessibility.
Having said all that, what I said initially is
important. Proper Internet training would teach what I described in my
first message.

Which is why, instead of expecting sighted site
designers to change the layout of their sites, blind people should know what
such "helpful" comments tell them. The shape obviously doesn't
matter. But if something is on the left side of a site, such as the
navigation links are, screen-readers place them at the top of the screen.
Then comes the main content, which is below the navigation links and which is in
the center of the screen for sighted users, the center from left to right, it
may be anywhere from top to bottom for a sighted user, then on the right, there
is often a number of links which blind people see at the bottom of the
screen. So when a sighted person tells you that something is on the right
middle of the screen, that means that, for a blind person, it will be near the
bottom of the screen.
A lot of blind people get poor instruction on how
to use the Internet.

Re: problems starting nvda with windows 1809 as an insider

I'm not sure what the problem is nor if the two
problems are related or completely separate. You can undo a restore
operation. You may want to do that. If you don't know how, tell us
the version of Windows you are running and someone will probably tell you.
Then, you may be able to do whatever you want
regarding NVDA, if you still need to, but undoing the restore will probably
allow it to work again.
As far as Adobe is concerned, before you do
anything else, let us know what happens when you try to run it. Is there
an error message? Does nothing happen? There are logs in Windows
that may give information on what the problem is or may be.

Wouldn’t that mean that machines running a 32-bit version of Windows would no longer be able to run NVDA. That would not be good since some of the computers at the organization I work for are running 32-bit versions of Windows. Therefore, I would no longer be able to use those machines to demonstrate NVDA.

Re: Web Browsers
Dave <dlh007@...>
Hello Brian,
I would like to believe that more programmers today, at least know of the need for writing Software with Screen Readers in mind, but I have my doubts. There is such a Flood of new Software, and then there are the countless Updates for everything currently available. With the urgent push to get new and updated software out the door, giving the attention needed to add Screen Reader support just seems more of a Dream, than something likely to be done. Even though it seems like I have greater accessibility today, I can't help but sense that we've actually less total access than in years past. What good is a Web Site, when you can read 90 percent of it, but can't read the Check Out function? Or find the Button that lets the Shopper move to the next 25 listings etc. I know there is the ADA that is a set of laws that are to require many things be done to ease the access to many things, from Buildings to Software, but so many things slip through without any kind of consideration for those in need of the alterations. Unless the laws are enforced, then what good is the law? I was just mentioning to a friend the other day, that I am sure telling a lie is against the law. And yet our Politicians and Media personalities lie to us all the time. So is the Set of Laws known as the ADA, doing us that much good? Dave

Toggling On and Off Format Documents
#addonrelease
David Kingsbury
Hello,
I have just discovered the document formatting tool and think it is great for checking formatting in my documents. Is there a way to quickly and easily toggle it on and off. I understand you can go into input gestures and do it for individual things in the dialogue box, but can you toggle on and off the entire set of elements with a single shortcut key? I don't want to have to go into the dialogue box and check and uncheck a bunch of check boxes every time I want to proofread my formatting. Thanks for any help on this, David Kingsbury
