Re: config gmail to work with mail client

Cuong,

The only thing you need to do is to set either IMAP and/or POP access on.  IMAP is preferable.

There is a link on the Basic HTML page, "Settings", which you need to activate.  Once that's done the settings page is up and there is a link, "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" that you need to activate.  On that page are radio buttons for POP that are Enable for all mail, Enable POP only for mail that arrives from now on, and Disable.  For IMAP there is only an Enable or Disable Radio button.

If you enable whichever you prefer and save the page you can then configure an e-mail client program to access Gmail via IMAP or POP.  There are also links on that page that read, "Configuration instructions", one under the POP choices and another under the IMAP choices that give you step-by-step instructions from Google's help pages on configuring popular e-mail clients for IMAP or POP access.

libreoffice 5.1 latest version and nvda

Josh Kennedy

hi
i installed libreoffice 5.1 went into options and checked and unchecked and rechecked the accesibility checkbox. i am happy to report libreoffice 5.1 and later work great with NVDA I can even get font info with capslock f. nearly everything seems to be accessible. spell check is also accessible. if you want a free office suite working well with NVDA I recommend libreoffice. libreoffice calc also work very well.

Re: OCRing pdfs using NVDA?

Dan,

I cannot speak to NVDA's OCR capabilities, but will offer a suggestion as a stand-alone.  A company with the unfortunate name, these days anyway, of Tracker Software offers a free PDF viewer called PDF-XChange Viewer.  When you land on the Tracker home page if you do an NVDA search for "free PDF" you'll land straight on the download link for PDF-XChange Viewer.

It has OCR capability for multiple languages built in to the free version and it has performed very well.  I have used it to process image scanned documents up to several hundred pages in length, and with some not-so-great original scans, and what it can OCR with it's default settings is pretty amazing.  Once an image scanned document that you know contains a lot of text has been opened in the program, simply hitting CTRL+SHIFT+C to run OCR on the file.  You simply save it (standard windows File menu commands) after the OCR is done and you have the file with a permanent text layer added.

Hi,

It turns out UK table does not have dot combination defined for em dash, so it’s something that should be fixed from LibLouis side.

Hi Joseph,
Sorry for slight delay I was consulting our braille expert and me had some network probs here yesterday!
From what I understand the unicode character is probably not defined, so is showing something like \x2014. In UK (SEB) braille there was not a definition exactly for em-dash and en-dash but there was for hyphen, short dash and long dash. dots: 36, 36+36 and 36+36+36+36 respectively. I presume the em-dash should be assigned to 36+36+36+36 these are all without spaces. I presume you know the UEB situation.
On a totally different subject do you know if NVDA support Alva Delphi 440 braille displays?
Cheers
Paul

Oh, okay. Why does the same anomaly show up when I use UK Grade 2 for the output table, though? I thought emdash in that system was two hyphens next to each other.

Hi,

UEB support: NVDA is using a really old Unified English Braille (UEB) table set. I plan to compile a third-party try build that’ll include newest UEB table set for testing purposes (I’m one of the table maintainers for UeB in LibLouis project).

GUYS! I didn't realise you'd moved! I was sending to the old list address and wondering why nobody was responding and if I was still subscribed or had typed the address wrong...

But anyways, now that I've found out where yous guys went, I shall get to the point of this message.

So I was recently able to purchase my very own Braille Display and I chose the Focus 40 Blue. I'm loving having it, as I've missed Braille and wanted to read my fave sites using the display as well as write. I look forward to NVDA supporting contracted Braille input. :D

One thing that's puzzling me, however, is the way "—"(the emdash symbol) is displayed on the Focus sometimes. Why it doesn't happen every time mystifies me but it's quite bizarre. My current output table is UEB Grade 2, but I tested this on UK Grade 2 as well and the result was the same. In Microsoft word, and a couple other sites I read from, whenever an emdash appears it's displayed as apostrophe+o-u symbol+x+lower 2014+apostrophe, and I don't know why or how to fix it. I use emdashes (and encounter them while reading)frequently enough that this eight-cell mutant is quite jarring to read. It doesn't NEED to take up that many cells, so why does it? And why only in MS Word  and on specific websites? Is this an NVDA or Focus issue?

It also happens in the Outlook Email editor. That's how I was able to describe what it looks like to me.

Need a keystroke to jump to first and last column in a table

Jamie Pauls <jamiepauls@...>

Hello, all,

Using Jaws, it is possible to jump to the first column in a table with alt-control-shift left-arrow. I really enjoy table navigation with NVDA, but I truly miss the ability to move quickly to the left-most column in a row when working with tables. Am I missing a keystroke here, or does this command not exist in NVDA? For the sake of completeness, alt-control-shift right-arrow moves to the end of a row.

It seems that these keystrokes could be easily included. What say you all?

Have a great 2016!

Jamie Pauls

Brian's Mail list account BY <bglists@...>

Is it something to do with the access settings of the user who installed nvda, perhaps?
I have also heard that there are some , how con one put this, third party versions of Win7 around that have caused issues before, but what one needs to know is.
Did this work before, andwhen exeactly, if not then its nothing new, just some kind of configuration issue.

I assume you cannot get a portable version to go eiter, IE if you get a sighted person to run the archive as downloaded, does it then work?
If yes, then I'd be thinking about completely removing the old version of nvda, not forgetting the settings in your user area, and starting again on a admin account.

practices is just inaccurate. It is very possible and likely to
contract computer infections even if one practices all safe behavior. It
no longer just takes a user engaging in risky behaviors to get malware
on a machine, and moreover even if it did and this was the only way of
contracting malware, this would mean that your expectation is that a
human is 100% safe and will do the right thing 100% of the time, which
is wildly inaccurate in my opinion. And even if you disagree with what I
am stating, having this debate about whether MSE is sufficient or not
every single week won't help us get any closer to deciding whether a
user should use it. MSE is accessible and Windows Defender is included
in newer versions of Windows. For you, this may be a reason to use it
along with your safer practices of computing. I'm okay with that if your
decision is to do so, however MSE is very, very poorly rated on many
levels by a multitude of tests that I can link to if anybody is
interested, and from a security perspective, it is irresponsible to tell
a user that MSE is good enough if they stay safe.

Anyway, a good wiki article about tools that work with NVDA and a
campaign to work with security vendors on this accessibility would not
be a bad idea. I will list some tools that I know about that are accessible.

Eset Security Suite Version 8 (9 is not accessible, and the company is
aware and says they are working on a fix)
Vipre Security Suite
I believe some reported that AVG is somewhat accessible.
Also, I believe that someone reported that Kaspersky is accessible once
you get past the installer which is inaccessible.

I use Sophos Home Cloud Anti-virus. It is my favorite for many reasons.
It is free, it is put out by a company that primarily secures larger
companies, it is cloud-based and completely accessible, and it doesn't
pack in a bunch of other products in a security suite that I do not require.
Spybot S&D and Spyware Blaster seem to work pretty well. Malware Bytes
also works well. I use WinPatrol, and that adds an extra level of
security, although I am rethinking this as it seems to be redundant to UAC.
I'm sure others can list other accessible products. Unfortunately, I
wish that others would be more accessible, however they are not at this
time.

Thanks.

to how the ratings are performed (and that does vary) that it still
throws into question whether you have a real answer to which program
is best.

I have said before, and I will say again, that you should not be
relying on antivirus programs to give you 100% protection from viruses
as any new computer virus has the potential to make its way to your
computer before it has been identified and the signatures for that
virus get added to a given antivirus program's detection list. The
best defense is simply being careful about where you browse on the web
and what you open in terms of e-mail attachments. Never open messages
that "seem fishy" to you based upon the subject not being in character
for the person you've received it from or things coming in from an
unknown recipient.

You can actually get a pretty decent idea about your browsing and
e-mail hygiene based upon two things:

1. Have you ever been infected and, if so, how frequently?
2. Has your antivirus program ever reported an infection to you? [You
could also check the log files regarding what, if anything, has
been detected/quarantined.]

If you're never getting (or very, very seldom) getting infected and
your existing antivirus isn't quarantining things on a frequent basis
then your own behavior is already consistent with what's wise for
avoiding infection. If this is the case, pretty much all of the
commercial antivirus programs, including Microsoft Security Essentials
(for those still on Win7) or Windows Defender (Win8 and later), will
prove to be more than adequate to give you the protection you need.

It's also wise to have an antimalware program (e.g., Malwarebytes
<https://www.malwarebytes.org/>) and an antispyware program (e.g.,
Spywareblaster <https://www.brightfort.com/spywareblaster.html> or
SuperAntiSpyware <http://superantispyware.com/>) since viruses,
malware, and spyware are not the same thing and many antivirus
programs don't look at anything but viruses and closely related attacks.

Another excellent program to have on your computer if you like to
download software, even from reputable sources, to give it a try is
Unchecky <https://unchecky.com/>. Pretty much all vendors are now
getting into the loathsome practice of bundling, where they'll have
things like toolbars, other programs, or the like bundled with the
program that you actually want and if you are not careful to uncheck
the checkboxes for things such as, "Install crazy toolbar as well,"
or, "Install free trial of premium version" [when what you really want
and need is simply the free version of something], you end up with all
sorts of crud on your computer that you really don't want. I recently
had to uninstall a lot of unwanted programs on a client's computer
that got there because he had one of his children assist him and
neither one of them were at all vigilant about the questions asked
during installation and simply answered in the affirmative to all of
them. Unchecky will notify you about what it's unchecked and you have
the option to recheck anything if that's what you want. So far no one
has told me there are any accessibility problems with Unchecky.

Hello,

I made a tutorial on how to use the gmail web view with NVDA:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=phClLFt2-dQ&feature=youtu.be

The instructions are also in the description.

Please let me know if you have any questions or comments. I use the
gmail web view for all my email.

Thanks,
