I completely agree with you! When I lost my site, what site I had, I got rid of my old gaming machine, because it was of no use to me anymore. The monitor and everything associated with it I have gotten rid of. I now have a laptop. Ironically it is much more powerful than what I had before, but because there is no tower system or external monitor, I now have a great deal more space than I did have. I spent a lot of money on my laptop, because I want it to last a good few years. But yes, if I ever did have to get another monitor, then I would get the cheapest available. Because there would be absolutely no point in me buying anything decent as I could not use it any more.

Or an iPad or tablet would work too.
I think another solution, assuming that there is not a time limit, is to download the image of the captcha, and eMail it to a sighted friend and have them solve it for you.
One should be able to do this with "save target as" with the applications key when you are on the captcha image.
I have never done this with a captcha, but I have with other images.

Re: Need some browser and screen reader input on a page

Jonathan COHN

Well, as soon as NVDA reads the line saying viewing dates after, the calendar is adjusted. If you read get to that line and then ask NVDA to read the line again with NVDA-up then it will read one month back, though pressing NVDA-up again does not adjust the scroll. I suppose I should try the site out on my Macintosh, where by default mouse and focus follow screen reader cursor. One minor point of interest is that the message indicating that only events after September 22 are being displayed is offscreen text. I have occasionally experienced NVDA misbehaving with links that are offscreen with a background image for the sighted person. Perhaps an offscreen clickable is being clicked when it is read by NVDA.

You might want to ask on WEB-AIM mailing list for advice, though since the calendar is in a frame it makes it a little more difficult to diagnose.

Our charity has a page with an events calendar on it at
www.kingstonassociationforblind.org

Now with nvda, I can navigate by header to the frame with the calendar in
it. I can hear it say the date its showing events from, with a clickable if
you wish to change it, but when I cursor down, it seems that the calendar
date is a month before the date its supposed to be.
With me so far?
However just powered up jaws 2018 and tried to do the same thing. Headers
do not seem to work to that point. I need to stop before it and go down, but
I'm still cursoring down and this time the event in the calendar does not
alter at all. This is in the latest version of firefox and the latest
version of Waterfox. Both seem to behave the same, ie differently on the
calendar.

Its as if the calendar thinks I've hit the scroll up in nvda but is OK in
Jaws. About the headings, well I am not an expert on Jaws, so I might be
missing something.

So what is occurring, our site builder is beginning to lose his mind!

another puzzling seting - this time Winamp

Giles Turnbull

Hi all,

I have another puzzling program issue, this time with Winamp.

I'm sure I've experienced this before, but I can't for the life of me remember how I sorted it out!

It relates to the Winamp 5.666 edition. I use it on my home laptop, my tablet computer and this new Dell laptop that I've got for university work.

For some reason I cannot navigate the playlist with NVDA. I suspect there is a setting that relates to how tracks are displayed, but I can't spot it in the preferences. The playlist window is definitely active.

If I move into the playlist I simply cannot navigate up and down the list. All NVDA says is “List.” I have a good 30 mp3s in the playlist and, even if I start a new playlist and then enqueue a further set of mp3s, I remain unable to navigate the playlist.

I didn't bring the Winamp 5.666 installer with me, unfortunately.

I installed the NVDA extended Winamp addon last night but that doesn't seem to have changed anything.

Any suggestions very welcome.

Giles

How odd. That was definitely an option before. Surely one can turn it off somewhere. I certainly do not get bothered. However one recent annoying thing is a message that opens behind the window I'm in when I try to delete from dropbox in the offline folder which after much alt tabbing asks if I want to delete from all registered devices. I'd love to make this default to off as it freezes the deletion of anything else till its entered on even though it has no button. It obviously is some kind of transparent alert that nvda has trouble seeing, only the ting noise alerts me.
However if you delete stuff via a batch file it fails to work grin.

Hi,
Again, unfortunately I have no firm evidence on this, but it does appear that CaptchaBeGone has also been abandoned. The following points lead me to this conclusion.
1. Out-of-date software (no support for Firefox above 57, no support for Edge etc).
2. Captchas never end up getting solved in the first place (though to be fair that could be caused by a number of different variable factors, including point 3 below).
3. Customers no longer seem to be billed (billing system comes up with
"500 internal server error" and has done so for a number of months now).
4. Last tweeted 18th September 2016.
5. No reply when contacted.
I won't go starting a rant about the developer involved, however let's just say that these signs come as no big surprise to me, hence the reason I never donated to the NVDA Remote crowdfunding campaign.
That having been said, CBG was a good service while it lasted, and NVDA Remote will still work with NVDA 2018.2 (I just have a portable copy lying around with that installed so that I can still use it when necessary).
Also let's not forget that the Firefox addon interface has been completely rewritten. One of the biggest reasons I'm still stuck on ESR
v52 is the fact that another addon I rely on doesn't work on versions later than 57, and the author has explicitly told me that it isn't physically possible to rewrite his addon with the new interface. So I guess this could also be a possibility with CBG. I just wish we'd been told, one way or the other.
Cheers,
Damien.

Is it like NVDARemote fore which we have no idea of its future?
Strange, it is another project from one of NVDARemote authors which is abandoned...

And to come back more to the list topic, what captcha solver can we
use with NVDA and WaterFox or last FireFox now the two best solutions

Also, as has been pointed out, passwords themselves are virtually never shown by default, and I can't imagine there's any blind individual who would frequently wish to turn on the show password feature where it is available.

It is one thing to be cautious and another to be paranoid.  There is no reason to believe that people volunteering to assist in this way are doing so to do you harm.

Can you open the dropbox preferences from the tray and see it on there? It used to be in there, but now my machine will not read the text in the preferences log in or share dialogues, I cannot say for sure.
I seem to recall though, that its off by default as it used to keep asking me with a pop up about whether I wanted to use photo sharing and back up. Odd as I have no photos to share or back up!

Hi all,

I've recently installed DropBox onto a new laptop. On my other devices I've obviously managed to turn off importing photos but on this new laptop I need to make the required change in my account preferences.

First of all I searched the net for instructions on doing this but it said I should look for a chekcbox by the import photos or import photos and videos ... obviously the checkbox should be checked to allow importing and unchecked to disable it. I could find no such checkbox using NVDA.

SO I asked in the DropBox community and was told essentially the same advice ... use the checkbox.

Is there a reason I'm not finding the checkboxes with NVDA 2018.3.1 using browse mode or object navigation?

Any advice on turning this setting off would be very welcome!

thanks,

Giles

Re: NVDA remote

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

This discussion seems to be flaring up a lot on here. It would save a lot of this if people in charge of add ons pointed people at Josephs patched version for now.
What one has to remember is that the original was written by a team, who collaborated under crowd funding to get the work done. Having done it, the team was broken up. Now we are trying to get some of that team to fix it to match new versions of nvda. Looking forward, this problem is only going to get worse as Python 3 looms larger.

What is done about add ons where the authors have moved on is a much bigger problem, which includes remote. That is what NV Access need to solve. Admittedly the add ons are outside of their realm of influence in the main, but the changes that cause them to fail are their responsibility so some effort by them needs to be made, in my view ahead of the next major change in NVDA or people will not be able to use new versions productively any more.
it is also unfair to rely on Josephs good offices in this as he has work to do and a life to live and people can easily burn out through trying to do the right thing without support.
I wish I could help but do not have the skills.

I think its fine to mix them, but not actually tried it. Its mainly the gui that is the issue and each is local to that copy so really should not affect things unless I'm misreading the data.
