Help Announcements in Office 2016 While Navigating The Ribbon

Jim Fettgather <jimfettgather@...>

This is by no means a bug, in fact, I am amazed that NVDA does the following:

When you start Word 2016, press Alt to bring focus to the ribbon, and
begin to tab down through the various icons on the ribbon, NVDA
announces helpful information that appears to be ignored by any other
screen reader.
In fact, I am not even certain whether or not the information is
visible on the screen. For example, when you Tab to Cut, NVDA says,
Remove the selection and put it on the clipboard so you can paste it
somewhere else.
So, how does NVDA do this, and where is this information originating,
since others have told me they cannot see it on the screen. It is
incredibly helpful and fantastic, I am just curious how it works.
Thanks a lot.

There is an fairly accessible web interface to the Apple store infrastructure at: https://fnd.io

I searched for Blind Square there and found this page:

https://fnd.io/#/us/podcast/948257850-blindsquares-posts-by-blindsquare

This site was used as a demo for developing accessible react web pages at a conference I was listening to online. FYI react is the component library used and developed by Facebook I did find after doing my search that there was little feedback that it had completed, but updated information was on the screen.

Hi
In the early 80's I used a German made, non-software based screen reader called Frank Audio Data to access Dos on IBM PC XT machines. The original was a replacement PC keyboard with the addition of horizontal and vertical slider controls topped with read buttons. Due to the screen in those days being 25 x 80 character cells, the sliders gave you tactile feedback and this, combined with audio output from the hardware provided excellent screen orientation. A later model retained the sliders in two separate units which worked alongside the standard PC keyboard. I found it extremely difficult to transition from DOS to Windows after working in an environment where I knew exactly how the screen looked to being unable to form a mental image of the screen layout.

Hi
going back farther still, the Apple 2E in the late 70s and early 80s had
the text Tucker screen reader with the echo Cricket speech synthesizer. You
can actually download be accessible mess Apple 2 emulator and see it
working in action today if you want to.

Hello all,

Please, forgive this O.T. This is the only list I'm on, so I thought of
asking here.

A friend of mine, her ein Italy, has been assigned a thesis on the history
and evolution of screen readers for Windows.

She doesn't seem to find any suitable material.

Would anyone have any suggestions as to where to look for some
documentation that might help her?

I know the request is a bit vague, but that's all I ahve for now.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, I am aware of this. Unfortunately, this is a school machine, therefore I can not invoke the update process myself. Therefore I was wondering what add-on version I should install until such time as the local IT person performs updates on our machines.

Hi List,

I would like to install Win10 App Essentials on a school computer, however I got an error saying that my version is out of date. Can I get the latest version that supports the version of Windows 10 that I'm running? Is it even worth it to install the add-on with such an outdated version?

Thanks,

Re: Files not showing

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

I think first you need to work out definitely that the files are in that folder, not a sub folder of it.. I have never heard of anything like this happening before, so if there are issues it may pay you to revert back to the previous windows 10. You did not say what sort of update it was either. Seldom do the routine updates cause problems its usually the big one like the one due in a few days time that are, I suspect designed to annoy users :-)

I'd also look at making extensions visible too and even system files. You can always change these if you like but it would be interesting to try an explicit operation like typing the complete pathname and file name into the run box and see if the default program can see and load the file.

If it can then it has to be a displaying issue.

Consider the most simple possibility first. Someone who uses Windows 10 can tell you how to do this. Set Windows to show hidden files. perhaps the files became hidden when the update occurred.

Try searching for the files using Windows search feature.

Maybe they somehow did not end up where you expect.

Also refreshing the file explorer window with f5 sometimes seems to help. But that’s probably not going to help you as you say you already opened the explorer window to your new folder *after* copying the files.

You could try other things. Go to where you think the documents ended up on the c (or whatever) drive and check the properties. Does it show space used by the folder? If it says “0 bytes”, it’s possible the files did not even copy.

I’ve never had files physically disappear after a windows update, but it’s possible something is screwed up with the documents library. You should still be able to access the actual documents folder. Maybe open the run box and type in the path to your personal documents folder and see what happens. In my case it would be “c:\users\jm\documents”.

Hi, I'm just starting to use my new Win10 machine. I copied many files and folders from my documents folder of an older machine into the documents folder under "this pc" on the new one. Now when I go to this pc and open the documents folder, all I see is folders; no files. I know they're in there because I was accessing them before windows did an update. Now they don't show up. Neither in "this pc" nor in "file explorer".--my mistake: two filenames do show, an ini file and a zip file. When I look at properties for the folder, I see that there are 286 items in there.
What should I do to get them back?
Thanks.
Sorry; I failed to mention that I'm using the current version of NVDA. But the demo of jaws doesn't see the files either.

A lot of the problem with programs in general is that sighed ways of doing stuff are often given in their tutorials, and has been said here before, often there are short cut keys for the functions that most users never even know exist.

It works very well with nvda and even better if you install the add on for it. It will then announce the position of the beginning and end markers as you move then so you know just what part of the file you've selected.

Then enter your city and test it.

Finally settle as the default or add it simply in your list and press OK button.

But I advise you to read the documentation, imn particular "Weather Plus First Settings.html"

Totally understandable. I’m using Excel as well, but with Jaws as NVDA doesn’t seem to like it very much.

Sarah,

Thank you for the offer.  I want it only for my own personal finances and am currently using Excel.

I Used to use Quicken 98 but it became obsolete.

HI Jean,

I don’t know of a program, I haven’t tried quickbooks yet, but, if you don’t find anything, I’d be happy to do your books for you. It’s a service my company provides, please feel free to contact me off list for more info. Best of luck in finding a program though!

I am still looking for a bookkeeping program that can be EASILY accessed by NVDA.  Quick Books would be my choice, but I don’t want to spend the money if it won’t work.

Is anyone using any kind of bookkeeping program that you can tell me about?

Thanks so much.

Jean

Money Talks is a good serviceable checkbook register and check writing program. Much depends on how sophisticated your book keeping needs may be.

You can download a functional version for trial. It is self -voicing  but works well with screen readers as well.
