Yes, I am aware of this. Unfortunately, this is a school machine, therefore I can not invoke the update process myself. Therefore I was wondering what add-on version I should install until such time as the local IT person performs updates on our machines.

You don't change this setting in properties.  There is a specific setting to tell Windows to show hidden files.  there may be another to tell Windows to show system files.  Since the files appear to be there, they may be hidden or, less likely, have been incorrectly designated as system files.

Consider the most simple possibility first.  Someone who uses Windows 10 can tell you how to do this.  Set Windows to show hidden files.  perhaps the files became hidden when the update occurred.

I’ve never had files physically disappear after a windows update, but it’s possible something is screwed up with the documents library. You should still be able to access the actual documents folder. Maybe open the run box and type in the path to your personal documents folder and see what happens. In my case it would be “c:\users\jm\documents”.

This is controlled by Report Object Descriptions checkbox found int NvDA menu/Preferences/Settings/Object Presentation panel. With this turned on, NvDA will try its best to gather control descriptions through whatever accessibility API the control uses 9UIA, in this case).

Hi
In the early 80's I used a German made, non-software based screen reader called Frank Audio Data to access Dos on IBM PC XT machines. The original was a replacement PC keyboard with the addition of horizontal and vertical slider controls topped with read buttons. Due to the screen in those days being 25 x 80 character cells, the sliders gave you tactile feedback and this, combined with audio output from the hardware provided excellent screen orientation. A later model retained the sliders in two separate units which worked alongside the standard PC keyboard. I found it extremely difficult to transition from DOS to Windows after working in an environment where I knew exactly how the screen looked to being unable to form a mental image of the screen layout.

going back farther still, the Apple 2E in the late 70s and early 80s had
the text Tucker screen reader with the echo Cricket speech synthesizer. You
can actually download be accessible mess Apple 2 emulator and see it
working in action today if you want to.

          You can update your Windows 10 by going to the Microsoft Windows 10 Download Page and invoking the Update Assistant with the "Update this PC" button.  If you need a newer version of Win10 App Essentials after doing that, this is available on the NVDA Add-Ons Download Page.   I would also suggest you visit the NVDA Add-Ons Under Development Page and snag a copy of the Add-On Updater add-nn, which monitors the add-ons you have installed to see if a newer version becomes available and will allow you to update immediately if you so choose.

For some reason older versions of Excel work better in NVDA, I suspect half

          Based on the title of your topic it's most likely NVDA telling you that your Version of Windows 10 (1703) is out of date.  That version loses all support from Microsoft in 8 days.  You should have moved along to Version 1709, followed by Version 1803, long ago.  You need to update Windows 10 very, very soon.  Ideally, you should take a full system image and separate user data backup of your current system before doing so.

I would like to install Win10 App Essentials on a school computer, however I got an error saying that my version is out of date. Can I get the latest version that supports the version of Windows 10 that I'm running? Is it even worth it to install the add-on with such an outdated version?
