Streamlining speech in NVDA
Felix G.
Hi everyone!
I just noticed that when archiving a message in Gmail using Firefox and NVDA, I get the following rather redundant message: Undo link undo undo link button. It's probably referring to the undo button which one could click in order to undo the last command given, in this case, archive. Also, when composing a message in Gmail, the window title was repeatedly announced, liberally interspersed with the word "unknown," while I was trying to find a contact in the auto-suggestions with the arrow keys. This was seriously slowing me down. This made me wonder just how much redundancy in speech we are currently getting from screen readers and to what extent this might hamper our efficiency. So I thought I'd ask around if anyone knows of any actual studies conducted on this subject. Is there such a field as screen reader user experience design? I consider myself moderately knowledgeable in the area of screen readers but I haven't found it yet. Are the current designs based on scientific principles, or on wild guesses as to what people need, based on personal experience of power users? Best, Felix

bugs with addon PlaceMarker
Mr. Wong Chi Wai, William <cwwong.pro@...>
Hi, me again.
I came across some bugs with PlaceMarker would like to report it here. Situation 1: I visited https://www.hkbu.org.hk/b5_services4.php and I selected "輔助工具介紹及下載區" (this is traditional Chinese) and then press ctrl shift nvda k to create a marker. then, if I press alt nvda k to bring up the note window, nvda crash and force restart. After restart, I try to open the note window again, and it crash again and restart again. Then if I press nvda k to move to the marker position and press nvda shift ctrl delete to remove the marker, then, pressing alt nvda k can bring up the note window again. situation 2: I visited another website in Simplified Chinese and selected text "1042楼2018-10-01 23:46" to create a marker. This time, pressing alt nvda k can bring up the note window, but the display of the note became something like "30937 - 1042?2018-10-01 23:46" where the Simplified Chinese was replaced with ? I thought the above bugs were something relating to Unicode? or something relating to multi language handling? May you please help to look it out. Thanks, William

Hi, everyone,
I’m using the mail app now and I do really like it. How do I turn off the “sent with mail” part of the signature? I don’t want to always hear that after signing a message.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Automatically start NVDA after I log on to Windows, unchecked after updates
Richard Wells
Ivan and all: I update several machines each time NVDA updates
and I can reproduce the problem as well. At first, I thought NVDA
had a problem because it wouldn't automatically start talking
after a reboot after the initial log-in, but upon checking
preferences, Automatically start NVDA after I log on to Windows
was indeed not checked in each case.

Hi, How are you all? I have a question about the snapshots of NVDA. I downloaded the latest snapshot. From September 19. And I would like to know if I have to file a bug, how do I do it? How can I open account on Github, and how can I file a bug?
Will I have to join a dev list or something?
Look forward to hear from you, Afik.

Hi
I recall being shown this at RNIB headquarters on a visit to the offices one day in the late 70x or early 80s. I also recall it from the Rehab centre in Torquay around 1986 or 87.

The original was a replacement PC keyboard with the addition of horizontal and vertical slider controls topped with read buttons. Due to the screen in those days being 25 x 80 character cells, the sliders gave you tactile feedback and this, combined with audio output from the hardware provided excellent screen orientation. A later model retained the sliders in two separate units which worked alongside the standard PC keyboard. I found it extremely difficult to transition from DOS to Windows after working in an environment where I knew exactly how the screen looked to being unable to form a mental image of the screen layout. > > Cheers > Chris > > -----Original Message----- > From: nvda@nvda.groups.io [mailto:nvda@nvda.groups.io] On Behalf Of erik burggraaf > Sent: 29 September 2018 14:46 > To: nvda@nvda.groups.io > Subject: Re: [nvda] O.T.: A friend needs info on screen readers history for her thesis > > Hi > going back farther still, the Apple 2E in the late 70s and early 80s had the text Tucker screen reader with the echo Cricket speech synthesizer. Add on updator and portible copy?
Roger Stewart
Just wondering if the add on updator add on will work with a portable copy of nvda? I'm thinking it won't because only an installed copy of nvda can install an add on automatically. A portable copy makes it necessary to point to the location where the add on file is located in order to install it.. However, it may still be able to let the user know that updates are available and which ones they are.

Hi
The website has been zipped you will need a program to unzip it. You can also do it with windows explorer but may be better to make a folder then put the files into it that is easy to find. Then it is a matter of just going to the index file with in the folder and pressing the enter key on it and use it like normal. As long as people have internet access they should be able to access audio files etc.
There may be another tutorial been added on later this week so will update the link to the drop box account then.
I will let people know then.

Re: Recently updated on accessibilitycentral.net
hurrikennyandopo ...
Hi guys
As you probably have noticed Accessibilitycentral.net has not be accessible and the following message comes up when you try to access one of the pages Website is temporarily down due to file system failure. Recovery is in progress, please check back later. Sorry for inconveniences .
The people we host with were alerted when i first noticed it and it has to be fixed on there end. I do not know when it will be back up but hopefully it is ASAP.
I guess this is maybe what you get some times when you host with a free provider? with no adds and only have to pay for the domain name.
It sounds pretty serious like the server hard drive took a dive?
If any one wants to access the material on it at present I can zip it up and drop box it until it comes back on line. This will only be the website files not the audio files as every one has access to the internet mostly.
You will then need to unzip it and put it into a folder with the files. Then it is a matter of just accessing the index file for the website. I might again even look at other options for hosting.
Let us know and can drop box to the list.

NVDA & NVDA Add-On Archive Pages - Has there been consideration to creating these?
I have always found it a bit odd that NVAccess does not have, at least that I know of, an "Older Versions" page much like JAWS and many other software houses do.
It has become abundantly clear that there will be times when NVDA, or an NVDA Add-On, ends up being updated but that causes a lot of other stuff to break for an individual user for a wide variety of reasons. It would be really nice if it were possible for the end user to have quick and ready access to, say, the immediately previous two or three releases of NVDA and the same for the Add-Ons. Right now the roll-back process, unless one has created one's own personal archive of installers, is a cyclic one-off effort where someone "on the inside" has to dig out a link that can be used to get an older release. Since these do not change after they are released (at least not typically) and certainly don't change once the next release is out in their prior release form, having archival access with ease just makes sense. -- Brian - Windows 10 Home, 64-Bit, Version 1803, Build 17134 The psychology of adultery has been falsified by conventional morals, which assume, in monogamous countries, that attraction to one person cannot co-exist with a serious affection for another. Strange pronunciations
Walmir Schultz <wsautodidata@...>
Hi,
After upgrading to NVDA 2018.3, eSpeak is strangely pronouncing all words with the letter "y" when in the Portuguese brazilian language. For example, the word "system" is being pronounced as "zystem". Can someone communicate this to the eSpeak team?
