Re: Sort of NVDA Question

Hi!
NVDA is Windows only, so can't be installed on Android, but in theory
you should be able to hear Talkback through Team Viewer. Maybe you
need to turn sound on in Team Viewer. Or TV for Android cannot
transmit sound to Windows, not sure about that one.

I have tried It, but It didn't change.

Maybe this is special format of tables in this document, but previous versions reads those tables, as a tables, not as a text.

Anyone having issues with the latest basic training for NVDA?

Mobeen Iqbal

Hello Everyone.

I am having a problem accessing the latest edition of the basic training for NVDA archive. When I placed my order last year, I was able to download a zip  archive containing different formats of the book. I recently decided to download the latest archive to take in to account latest improvements in NVDA. When downloading the basic_training_for_NVDA-NVAccess-20180615.zip archive, it only contains an HTML copy of the book. Are the other formats no longer being produced? Is there any way of downloading the latest edition in multiple formats without me having to convert them all manually?

Very best wishes,

Mo.

It sounds to me like there is a user profile for just word set up. Look at the profiles dialogue and see what you have set up. My guess is either that word has it set to sappi 5 or there is a say all rule set for that synth. I can think of no other reason for the symptoms you have.

Hi Bryan,
Yes, I was using the sappi 5 voice until a short time ago. Now I found out that espeak automatically reads texts in German and English, which is nice - especially for homeworks with an English text and German questions...
I've tried to change the speech setting in NVDA, but as I explained: In Word it's always switched back to sappi 5 if I close the NVDA speech settings. Are there any program specific settings somewhere? Or even better: Is there a keyboard shortcut to switch between different languages in sappi 5?

Re: Windows10 Screen Reader in Word #NVAccess

Sylvie Duchateau

Hello Sven,
If you use the Microsoft OneCore voices in windows 10, there is also a multilingual support.
You just need to install the voices you need. This is in the speech parmeters of Windows.
Once you have installed the voices, changing languages work, I just tested it in a Word document written in French, German and English.
1. You have to make sure that language automatic detection is checked in Nvda parameters, speech, automatic language change.
2. In Word, when yo write in different languages, you have to check in the statuts bar, that your text selection is in the right language. Press f6 several times to reach the status bar, then use the arrow keys to read in which language the selection is.
3. When you read the document, the languages should work fine.
I just tested the same document with Espeak and language changes work here.
Do not hesitate if I can help.
Best

I‘ve got a strange problem in Word under Win10. The system is setup to use the NVDA eSpeak NG as screen reader now, because it is the only screen reader with multi-language support for Word, so it can read texts in English and German without problems. I‘ve used Microsoft Speech API v5 before, because the voice is very natural.
All Windows commands (etc.) are using eSpeak NG, but Word is still using the Microsoft Speech API v5! Only if I open the NVDA speech settings, eSpeak NG is also used as screen reader for Word. As soon as I close the settings dialog, Word switches back to the MS API! I can even confirm that when looking into the NVDA log. It also shows the switching. Is there a way to prevent this? Or is there another way to get multi-language-support?

Re: Are There Now or Has There Recently Been a Problem with Donating . . .

Quentin Christensen

Brian,

Are they coming from one of our pages to donate?  On our donation page for instance: https://www.nvaccess.org/support-us/#donation-support it lists a range of suggested values, all in Australian dollars, with the last one in each row being an edit box you can change the value of.  When you activate one of the buttons, it then takes you to PayPal ready to make a payment of that amount.  I think once you give it your credit card details, it might work out where you are from and what amount it will withdraw in your local currency?

If you go to PayPal's site and "Pay someone", then you can select the currency and choose either to send a set amount in your local currency - and it indicates how much we will receive in Australian dollars, or you can choose to donate an amount in Australian dollars and it advises how much that will be in your local currency.

We did have a currency conversion widget on the old site, but it hadn't worked for some time, so we dropped it from the new site.

Kind regards

Quentin.

Often if your card has expired, yet your new card is on their account at
Paypal you have to go in and make the new one default as some banks systems
are so bloomin thick they never ask to try the other card. What  I did was
delete the old one making the current one default, by default, if you get my
drift.
Other things can upset it. Sometimes you can tie it to an account without a
card but have a transaction limit of some sort set. This can cause problems
as well. Very handy for stopping fraud of course, but if your account is not
using an overdraft and the credit limit is small, it tends to just not  know
what to do.
I guess it is dangerous to use a debit cared, as credit cards afford some
protection, but I've not been  hacked yet, and the banks do tend to put the
money back in a goodwill gesture so far if people I talk to are anything to
go by.
But, this is all academic. It has to be something wrong with the set up
that gives such errors, and only trying to find which bit is the solution,
from what I've read here, its usually the bank. Some banks will not agree
till you reply to an email they send you and click a link in the account.
That is a bit paranoid unless you are talking about thousands of pounds or
dollars, in my view and I have found my bank normally calls me if their
algorithm spots something out of the ordinary.

I have had several problems trying to donate and getting an error message
saying that the card was rejected but the problem is that I was not using a
card but rather using my bank.  I talked to PayPal and they could not even
see a transaction being initiated so I could not get past the initial

. . . when installing/updating NVDA?

I ask because a friend of mine who's a long term NVDA user, and has donated
many times along the way, mentioned to me this evening that when she did the
latest update she could not get through making a donation.  We're in the
USA, and she describes the situation as being that no matter how many times
she tried to get the donation currency set to USD and enter her credit card
information things kept reverting back to Australian dollars and starting
the whole "fill in the form" process again.

She's been a screen reader user since there were screen readers, and knows
NVDA inside and out.  I thought I'd mention this here as it would be a shame
if this were not an isolated incident and others who wish to donate were
being stymied in doing so.

Probably redundant replying now, but I will anyway :)

The main issue that I'm aware of, is that you need to be running Windows 7 with Service Pack 1.  If you have an older version of Windows 7, you'll need to run NVDA 2017.3 until you update to SP1.

Otherwise, Windows 7 is certainly still supported, so if you do encounter anything else that doesn't work as expected, do please let us know.

Re: Files not showing

Tony Ballou

Hi,

Howard, if this is windows version 1809, unfortunately the files may be gone.  Have you attempted to unzip the file since it tells you that there are 286 items in there overall?

Folks have been talking about this phenomenon on the list lately and I believe there's an article about it up here somewhere, however, I haven't found the message with the link to it in my mass of emails. So if anyone could repost that article, it would be appreciated.

Just the other night my business partner told me that folks were losing their data after upgrading from 1803 to 1809.  And in one such case a user lost over 250 Gigs of data. So it would appear that the first thing you'd want to do before upgrading to windows 1809 would be to backup your c:\users\documents folder, and any other folders where you have documents and things that you feel are important to an external drive.

Hi Walmir,

Someone (possibly you?) reported this on Twitter as well and I created an issue on the eSpeak NG issue tracker here: https://github.com/espeak-ng/espeak-ng/issues/557

Feel free to subscribe to that or reply if you have more detail to add.

If you do subscribe to the issue, feel free to prompt me when they fix and close it, and we'll look at updating the version of eSpeak NG we use in NVDA.

NVDA doesn't automatically update eSpeak NG builds as new ones are released, but we'll make updating a priority when we know there are fixes in there that users are waiting on.

Thanks mate. I've had a copy of this program for a while now but have yet to use it.  Looks like from what I've been reading and hearing from numerous reputable sources, here on this list, in the wires, and in my personal network that this will definitely come in handy prior to and after upgrading from windows 1803 to 1809.

There has been much discussion on several groups about an entirely accessible backup utility with regard to actually taking a full system image backup.  I have yet to find a backup and recovery utility that is 100% accessible in all respects, but Macrium Reflect, Version 7, is 100% accessible for creating a full system image backup for "the typical user" who keeps the typical disc arrangement under Windows where all OS files and user data files are on the C: drive.

Given what's been happening over the last several days with the Windows 10 Version 1809 feature update it is really critical to take a full system image backup before it is applied.

Here's the link to download the step-by-step instructions, along with notes about setting things up, in MS-Word format:

Using Macrium Reflect With a Screen Reader To Take a Full System Image Backup

You should be presented with a Save dialog shortly after activating the link.

I went through this process from beginning to end using NVDA to control everything.  I cannot imagine that things should be different in JAWS and possibly even Narrator.  If there are any significant differences that you encounter please share them on this topic.
