Why does NVDA find not find "cars" on this page?
https://harrisonburg.craigslist.org/search/cto?auto_make_model=convertible
If I use a straight browser search it finds the word, "cars," in the navigation frame on the left in the "cars & trucks - by owner" link, and it is a link, as well as in the "background text" in the edit box that shows the same phrase in light gray until you start typing in a search term. Sometimes when I use the NVDA find it finds it, other times, it doesn't. It seems to depend on my having interacted with the page, but that content does not appear/disappear whether I've interacted with the page or not. I seem to have this happening more frequently lately with both NVDA and JAWS (yes, I know that this isn't the JAWS group, but wanted to note it). I have always encouraged my clients to favor the screen reader search function over the straight browser search as it takes into account controls that a straight search does not. But lately it also seems to be not finding things I can clearly see are present on the screen. It's a mystery to me why this is. -- Brian - Windows 10 Home, 64-Bit, Version 1803, Build 17134 The psychology of adultery has been falsified by conventional morals, which assume, in monogamous countries, that attraction to one person cannot co-exist with a serious affection for another. Tooltips
Vlad Dragomir
Good afternoon,
Friends, this might seem odd to some and obvious to others, so I feel I should apologise in advance for what follows. I've just learnt about the existance of tooltips. If I understand well, they are messages displayed when someone points the mouse at certain elements on a web page, without clicking on them. If possible, I would be curious to know the folowing: 1. How can we know if, and where these tooltips are present? Does NVDA anounces them? If so, what does it say?I don't remember hearing such information so far, and I've been using it for quite a while. 2. How can we read those tooltips, given that we rarely use the mouse? At least I never do that, even though I know about mouse simulation; I never have the reflex to actually use that function. I am getting old I suppose. I thank in advance all those who will enlighten me on this topic. Warm regards from France, Vlad.

Re: Screen reader accessibility with Kindle
Dave <dlh007@...>
Why not just download the Kendal for PC program?
I've been using it for about a year, and have bought close to 15 Books so far and counting. Almost all Books will let you read their Text with JAWS or NVDA. But I have purchased Two Books that do not allow the use of a Screen Reader, but the Kendal program attempts to speak the text. It isn't a good clear voice, and so far I've not figured a way to re-read a line, or go back a line or two. Not sure how to know if a Book will read with the Screen Reader or not. but, having the Kendal program on your Computer works for me.

Re: Password for certification Exam
Keith Bundy <kbun@...>
Hi, Quentin. I did find a way to create a new account on the page. I’ll try the password recovery one more time and, if that doesn’t work, will create a new account with a different email address.
Should I wait to take the exam? I believe I read that you are in the process of confirming that the updated questions are live. Your thoughts?
Thanks.

Hi Keith,
If you haven't purchased anything else, you can create a new account from: https://www.nvaccess.org/my-account/
If you have purchased other things (eg training material), you will need to recover your existing account in order to retrieve those (there is no pre-requisite for the original certification exam, though ideally you'd only want one account).
In the meantime, I will look into our system, just in case there is any issue with sending out the password recovery email.

Quentin.

I believe you can also download a Kindle App for Windows. However, I found the process of downloading books through Kindle in a browser on my PC and accessing those books with NVDA or other screen readers difficult and never successfully read Kindle books on my PC. I have ben using my Iphone and Ibooks as my portable ebook reader.

Screen reader accessibility with Kindle
Akshaya Choudhary
Hello guys!
Since, ebook readers especially customized for blind people, like Victor ebook reader, are very expensive, I'm thinking of buying a Kindle. I have heard that it has a screen reader called voiceview. How good is it? And how long does the battery last while using screen readers for reading books? Also, the latest version of Kindle Paper White doesn't come with an audio jack, so I'm also open to purchasing an older model. All suggestions are welcome. Regards Sociohack

Thanks, Quentin. I did donate, so that’s probably why I have an account. But I tried every password I know – all to no avail.
Thanks for looking into the system for me. I’ll try retrieving my password later today. I didn’t even see an option on the page to create a new account, and I am guessing this is because I have donated and thus have the account.

Some time nvda seems quite laggy in my laptop. I am using asus laptop with windows 10 1803, latest version of nvda and I have 8 gb ram along with ssd as well Most of the time nvda is unable to respond specially on file explorer, eg When I open this-pc nvda stop reading all those list as local disk c, d and other shortcut icon. This is mainly happening when I am using some other program in the background, if I am downloading some thing then I open file explorer then nvda keeps quite. In another case if I had close other running program and open file explorer then also nvda’s feedback is very slow and laggy. I do have another disappointing experience with nvda, mainly I have to work in a Microsoft office’s program like word, excel etc in their also nvda gives very let respond while typing and reading. Please fixed this issue if possible, thankyou Madhusudan ghimire from Nepal.

Re: NVDA Snapshot types

While I don't disagree with you, most of the errors and issues which have required additional RC's and stable releases, have been from issues which do not affect everyone, but for those they affect, they would manifest very quickly. Which is why we get these reports almost immediately after releasing the new version. I think then, that the issue is not so much the length of time of the beta cycle, but how do we get more people, on different systems, to try the betas earlier?

Not so sure they are the same. When using another device to control the machine its more like the remote add on situation I would imagine.

The question really is, what key could one use that is not important in any other setting if its hi jacked for the nvda key. Might be interesting to see if the Shark works and kind of see what they did if it does. I'm thinking of some kind of double tap of a key with the other key you need or something like that. Here in the group is also a good place to get comments and other people's thoughts on it and have that discussion, so yes, I think you've done all the right things. Actually you mentioned an older issue - I haven't looked that one up, but if it's the same, it's possible one will get closed as a duplicate of the other (if that happens, subscribe to the other issue, and add any extra comments there as well). Re: keyboard
Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>
I seem to remember that there were very valid reasons why trying to read just control and shift keys was not a good idea. For a start on their own, except windows ones, they only do stuff if they are combined with another, also I think that if you do intercept them then you get a stutter if you try to use a combination which is often more confusing. One of the biggest issues I get with people is that they seem unaware that the right hand key next to the space bar is in fact alt/control or that the right windows key has specific context sensitive uses, but can be still used if the laptop does not have the key by using shift with a function key. And do not get me started with the issue of laptops having the normal functions only available if you use an fn key as well.
