I don’t believe I was assuming anything. I merely reported that the stream was  coming through “loud and clear” on my own version of the programme, which is not the new beta, but v5.666. I asked her if she had tried with that version and had experienced the same volume issue, and she said yes.

You are assuming that the station is streaming at its correct volume.  Did you try other streams?  did you stream the station in the old player very shortly before installing and trying the new Winamp?  Never assume.

That probably has little to do with winamp.
Couple of things you could try if you haven't:
Make sure Winamp has a high enough volume set in your Windows audio mixer. You can get to it from the system tray. If you have Windows 10, you can control the output volume of the various applications that use audio. Not good for fine-tuning in my experience, but if you find a programme always has a low volume, it doesn't hurt to check.
Make sure the volume in Winamp is high enough. Up and down arrows usually control this, as you probably know.

Finally, winamp has a pre-amp as well. This is for boosting the amplitude of sounds that have a low output volume, IE, the volume of the stream or file itself is low. Open the equalizer with alt-g. You'll probably have to ctrl-tab to put focus on the equalizer. Then, hit the grave accent key to increase the preamp power. You don't want to do this too much or else you'll get distortion. Just boost the sound until it's comfortable.

Hey.

Well, not having any knowledge of where she got the address, I clicked on the link provided in the e-mail, and everything worked as expected, including the stream.

Looking at the url given now without the – character in place … it seems exactly the same. I’m guessing they registered both domains then.

Hi all

I have been noticing lately that many browse mode shortcuts are
sluggish in Google Chrome, especially on large web pages. Let me try
to explain what I mean with an example.

Suppose I open a large email thread (say 20 replies) in gmail in
Google Chrome. If I press H and then K, my cursor is supposed to find
the next heading, and then find the next link after that heading and
stop there. However, if I press them quickly one after the other, then
the after finding that link the cursor would jump back to the previous
heading as if I had pressed Shift+H afterwards. In other words, the
cursor would frirst find the heading, then jump to the next link, and
then it would mysteriously jump back to that heading again, all within
a short time, like within a second. I mentioned H and K just an
example - it seems that this issue can be reproduced with almost any
two browse mode commands, such as F, E, G, and so on.

Has anyone been aware of this issue? Are there any known workarounds?
One obvious workaround is for me to wait after every single browse
mode keystroke, but that would make using Chrome too anoying - I would
have to wait for about a second after pressing any browse mode
keystroke.

Actually I could reproduce this issue on the other browsers too -
Firefox and IE, although on a much lesser scale. In both Firefox and
IE you need to press these keystroeks really quickly together (maybe
less than 0.1 seconds apart to reproduce it, which probably wouldn't
affect anyone. This bug is only bothersome in Chrome.

I'm using the latest NVDA 2018.3.2 and the latest Windows 10. I have a
modern laptop, so this is not an issue of running out of CPU or
memory. I don't have too many tabs open and I don't have other
programs running.

Best regards
Tony

Re: Question on settings

Gene

I just saw Joseph Lee's message and I see that if you are using laptop layout, nvda key up arrow does what you are experiencing.  If you are using laptop layout and you have a keyboard with a numpad, switch to the desktop layout.  I don't like the laptop layout.  it isn't consistent.  If you are using a computer without a numpad, I think it is a much better idea to get a USB numpad. and use the desktop layout.

Whatever you do, I think using numpad 8 is a much more convenient command.  if you are in object navigation mode, it does the same thing and only requires one hand and one finger.

Are you using the same version of NVDA you were using before the reinstallation, or did you install a new version of NVDA when you reinstalled Windows and NVDA?

I don't have much in the way of suggestions at this time except that if you installed a new version of NVDA, that you try an earlier version of NVDA run as a portable.

But first, try read current object, numpad 8 and see if it reads the correct line with the version you are currently using.  Usually, numpad 8 reads the same line as NVDA key up arrow does when you are in object mode.

Re: winamp is on ninite

Also, I see that if you use the incorrect address you gave, the site comes up.  But it isn't the correct address and care should be taken for reasons I gave in my previous message.

Also, since the incorrect address works, it may be that you got the incorrect address somewhere and never checked the address.  But even though you may know that the address you got or were given works, it is important to be careful about addresses.

So I'm sorry if I gave you too hard a time in this specific instance, but that is because I hadn't checked the incorrect address yet to see if it works and because of the importance of this topic.  it is better, unless you are absolutely sure of an address to copy it from the address field to the clipboard.  that completely eliminates the possibility of mistakes.  Or if you are sure of an address, if you type it, go over it character by character afterwards.

Don't give what you guess is the address.  Check it.  go to the site and paste the link from the address field to the clip board and then into the browser.  There is no www.  Not all Internet addresses have www's.  There is no hyphen.  The correct address is:
Unless you are absolutely sure, beyond any doubt, chec the address.  It isn't just a question of inconveniencing people who try the incorrect address.  With well known sites, criminals purchase domains almost identical to the right one so that when someone enters the wrong address, usually from a typographical error, they will be taken to a hacker's site and malware may be attempted to be downloaded to the computer or attempts may be made to induce the user to give personal information.

NVDA and VirtualBox

Kelly <kelly@...>

Hi,

I recently tried NVDA with VirtualBox and found that the NVDA keyboard commands simply quit working.  Browsing the NVDA issue tracker, the closest issue match I found talked about VirtualBox crashing with NVDA back in 2015.  See https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/4795.

I’m not finding things crashing at this point but NVDA doesn’t read anything as I tab and again all the keyboard commands quit working.

The earlier issue was closed as a VirtualBox issue.  My guess would be this experience I’m having is likely still from the same issues as caused the first to be closed.

What are the experiences of others here if you have tried VirtualBox lately?

Kelly

There are some things about System Access that I still like and even miss, but one of the things I love about NVDA that System Access never had the ability to do is to be able to utilize a pronunciation dictionary and change up words that aren't pronounced correctly.
