This is incorrect.  If you want automatic updates, and for security reasons alone you should, you can set apps up to auto-update.  You can, however, not set them up this way, and you will be asked and can accept/reject.

The fact of the matter is, regardless of platform, you, for any you, do not have the choice to use your favored version of anything "forever."  It's foolhardy to try, too.

When we have a terrorist attack, on September 11, 2001 with 19 men — 15 of them are Saudis — and five minutes later the whole country thinks they’re from Iraq — how can you have faith in the public? Hello list. I have a question about whois.com. We are taking over some domains on that service. It appears to not be completely accessible. Links that look like links don't react to pressing enter, nvda + enter, or anything else. Only thing I haven't tried is using the objpad add-on. When we tried to left click, it would open volume mixer. That last is probably something not done right on our end.

Any experience any of you all have with this service is much appreciated. To be more specific, I'm speaking of the admin page. If you try to activate settings or help, nothing happens. The billing summary link works. Also, some buttons don't work on this same page, such as the renew button.

Re: profile triggers

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

No, I even see this on different sound cards on the same machine, even if they have their own control panels. Something in Windows seems to be global and beyond the control of other applications. I suppose theoretically if some software monitored the sound hardware selected in real time it could look up the volume and change it in the global settings, but I'd have no idea where to start, especially given the different sound resources in windows 7 to10.. Obviously Windows 10 has a way to duck system and audio from a web site etc, when a screenreader is speaking, but that is a relatively new feature.

Subject: [nvda] profile triggers

Hi all,

I was looking at the NVDA user guide section on activating different profiles with triggers such as for a specific application. I suspect the anser to this will be no, but is there any way to make a trigger respond to whether the audio is being played through the laptop internal speakers, headphones or over bluetooth?

When I use my bluetooth speakers NVDA's volume is very loud compared to audio being played by WinAmp. I tried makeing a profile with a lower volume level that is triggered when WinAmp is active, but the moment focus moves out of Winamp NVDA's volume jumps back to the normal profile. I tried adjusting the volume level of my normal profile down to 50 percent (it's at 100 by default) but then once I turn off the bluetooth speakers NVDA is hard to hear and I'd have to raise the level in the Windows volume or go into NVDA profile and bring the volume back up to 100 percent there.

Using the volume mixer also suffers from the same combination of volume difference ... If I lower NVDA's volume there then once I switch from bluetooth to laptop speakers NVDA's volume is too low!

So, to cut a long question short, is there anyway to get NVDA's volume to adjust automatically dependent on whether laptop speakrs, headphones or bluetooth speakers are active?

Thanks,

Giles

Re: modified nv speech player

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

Yes but what I said is still going to stand. It really does need to be checked and if OK put on the add ons official site as very soon now a lot of add ons will fail in new versions of nvda, and something as crucial as a synth, needs to be reliable. We will see a lot of posts here if its not compatible with the new versions of NVDA, and hence, it will help everyone if this is dealt with now. Do you know the writer, and why they are not putting their modified version on the local user add on list?

Hi,

When you are on the website for the modified speech player voices, be sure to get the addon which specifically says its by Jason bratcher, in order to get many more speech player voices. Use the addon by Jason bratcher.

This is why I subscribe to this list in daily summary mode. I only get one email message from the group per day, and I can more easily skip the topics that don't interest me. It's pretty easy to change your preferences in groups.io. If you need to know how, let me know privately. With the high volume of traffic, I think this subscription mode makes it less stressful.

Re: link for synthe discussed yesterday

I tried the Bratcher version of E-Speak and, while there are more voices, the version without the bratcher name is actually better.  Since people may vary in their opinions, those who are interested in this synthesizer should try both, in my opinion.

I don't know whether to just state this as a fact since people differ but the accents in the nonBratcher version are more pleasant to listen to and the consonants in the Bratcher version aren't as pleasant to listen to.  This may be because they are more emphasized and it may also be because of the sound of some of the consonants.  I didn't adjust the consonants in the options of the player program.

Re: first read all - then react - nvda list has become a chatter group

Gene

These are my thoughts as moderator.  The owner is the ultimate authority and he may wish to comment.

The list has been run in this way, regarding traffic, long before I became moderator.  That doesn't mean it has to be but it may be the best of various imperfect possibilities.

If you moderate too tightly, you may harm a sense of community that, one hopes, develops on good lists.  And at times, it has been my observation, that even if a thread drifts, useful information may be sent and you never know when that might happen as a result of the drift so I tend not to regulate it much.  If something is really offtopic, I may do so but I find that in such cases, the thread often stops by itself very quickly.

Also, even when a moderator makes suggestions such as to change subject lines if a thread drifts too far, these generally aren't followed in my experience with this and other lists.

As a practical matter, I'll discuss ways of managing mail so people may deal with what they don't want to read much more efficiently than they may be doing.

Reading the first message or two in a thread to see if you are interested is one way.  Of course, you can do this on a day when the list is particularly busy or on days when there are long threads you may or may not be interested in.  You can read mail by conversation, which involves setting your e-mail program to show all messages with a certain subject line in a group.  You can skip all in a group and you don't have to down arrow through them all to do so.  The conversations are organized in a tree view so you can open one conversation, read what you want, then close it and delete the entire conversation at one time.

I haven't done the following so I don't know what happens if you follow the link but each message has a mute thread link in the footers at the bottom of the message.  You can follow this link and the thread will either be muted, you won't receive any more messages in it, or you will be taken to a page where you do something to mute it.  As I said, I don't know which.

These suggestions, or some of them, may help those who want to manage messages.

In that case perhaps a moderator could put up a sticky topic reminding people not to go off-topic?

Single letter navigation on web searches

Greg Rhodes <gkrhodes@...>

I recently had computer problems and had to reload windows 10 (1803), NVDA, MS Office, etc. I’m using Google as my home page in MS Edge. When I did Google searches prior to computer reload, single key header navigation was very snappy. Post-reload, it is very slow. I used to be able to type “h” and quickly jump from one search to another. Now, NVDA continues to read the first heading for a long time, even though I have hit the “h” again to move to the next heading. Is there something I missed in my NVDA settings that would make this move from heading to heading more quickly? Thanks.

Greg
