Re: error updating

Hi,

Okay. AT this point, I recommend going to addons.nvda-project.org, look for Windows 10 App Essentials, and download the stable version and install it.

Cheers,

Joseph

Hello Joseph,
I tried latest alpha, and while it might be happening less frequently,
it still does happen. As it is a rare observation to begin with, I
cannot say if its frequency really decreased.
Taking the risk of repeating myself, I would like to emphasize again
that fixing this issue would dramatically improve the perceived
stability and maturity of NVDA. Again at the risk of repeating myself,
if there is anything I can do to help track this down, I'd go out of
my way to do so. Twice if needs be.
Best,
Felix

Hi,

I get this quite a lot of the time.

It's frustrating to see it not be fixed. This is a basic task and this does not plague other screen readers. I've been going on about this issue for quite some time as my work heavily relies on windows explorer and I can't switch to NVDA full time because of this. It seems to crop up the most after deleting, copying, or moving files, folders, or even single files but it can randomly happen at other times as well.

Re: Eloquence with Lates Version of NVDA

Josh Kennedy <joshknnd1982@...>

personally I just like the sapi5 eloquence because it works with everything. I do have a question though. Why don't they offer the Japanese and Korean and Chinese eloquence languages in the sapi5 version? A long time ago I bought a sapi5 eloquence from computer room services in the UK, and i think in their sapi5 eloquence it offered the japanese chinese and korean languages. But I guess since I own a jaws license which lets me use nuance voices for free with that screen reader i could always just get those languages and use them with jaws, then. I think though the best deal on vocalizer voices is all sapi5 vocalizer voices for $115 from www.atguys.com ...

Re: How to Skip Ahead to Text With NVDA

Gene

The command finds any text on the page.  I'm not sure if it always works properly, though it usually does.  Try the search twice if you think it didn't.  You can just use the repeat search command.  But where were you on the page?  Use control home to move to the top of the page before doing the first search.  I'm not sure if the virtual cursor shows you where you are so make sure with control home.

I very seldom get a not found message if the text is there and if I am searching before its occurrence.  I'm using an old version of NVDA and sometimes the search stops on something above where it should be.  Just using the repeat search command takes you to the right place.  This may or may no longer happen, at times.

When you issue the control insert f command, you should hear search dialog spoken, not anything else like search tool bar.  If you don't hear search dialog, press escape to close anything that might have opened then try the command again.

Moving to the top of the page, for reasons I won't go into now, should prevent you from having different results when you issue the search command in terms of whether you hear search dialog or not.

Insert Control F brought up a drop-down, but erroneously returned Not Found. Does that command only search within the current container type? I was searching for text within a table that had a role of "presentation". Could thta have been the problem? Then I repeated the same search from the location bar, and it brought up a different type of a find pop-up, nad this time found the text and highlighted, but did not do anything when I tried "Say All" (via Insert Down Arrow)

How Accessible is the Plex Server Application for Windows?

Kenny <kwashingtonbox@...>

Well it's that time of the year and I'm starting to see some great deals for popular streaming services.

One being: New Subscribers: Plex Lifetime Pass Subscription $90

https://slickdeals.net/da/p121658710/?utm_medium=em-i&utm_term=18&utm_content=17551012&utm_campaign=8890&dealalertid=56317525&mtid=71&generated=1542327118

I've always wanted to use Plex to stream my massive music library to all of my devices, but the last time I used the server software, it wasn't that accessible.

Can anyone confirm if things have improved with the latest version of NVDA 2018 and Plex running under Windows 10 Version 1809 (OS Build 17763.134)?

Thanks.

Re: Inconsistency in Windows Explorer

Hello Brian,
it happens only occasionally, so a restart of NVDA is not even
required. I just do it again and it will usually work. I'm just
pointing it out as an inconsistency because I see no valid reason for
it to happen even 1 % of the time. Think of me as pedantic and you'd
be right. Being a computer scientist with a strong background in
mathematics does that to people I guess.
It happens on both latest Win 10 64 bit and Win 7 64 bit.
It's an installed NVDA.

Felix

Re: Inconsistency in Windows Explorer

Well I got another issue like this.

Tried to run my virus updater, followed by dropbox which does actually bring up a slightly slow responce because its a big program then tried to open file explorer.

Nvda simply decided to lock though me trying things had the system respond, so I knew it wasn't dead, the system wouldn't allow me to do anything though for at least 10 minutes, eventually nvda came back and I was able to reboot the system.

I didn't want to turn it off in case I screwed things I probably just overloaded my 3rd gen i5 core, its been struggling with huge programs so who knows.

Re: NVDA is slow with Outlook

Hi Brian,
I installed the latest alpha build, and indeed it works beautifully
with Outlook. Thank you so much for the suggestion. And also the
latest alpha seemed to have resolved my issue with slow keystrokes in
Google Chrome, so maybe these two problems were caused by the same
underlying reason.

Best
Tony

There do seem to have been a number of problems with Outlook for most
screenreaders lately, probably due to the changing face of Outlook itself.
Myself, I find it very much a slow bit of software, but I'm not running 10,

and dread the day when I need to rely on it over my old faithful Outlook
Express hack for windows 7.

Subject: [nvda] NVDA is slow with Outlook

Hello all,
I am trying to set up a new laptop for my work, and I encountered a
few problems with Outlook. One of the problems is that NVDA reacts to
keystrokes with a delay. For example, in the list of messages when I
press up or down, I only hear NVDA speaks the next/previous message
after a second. I am aware of preview pane and I have disabled it, so
that's not an issue. I have also disabled preview of messages directly
in the messages list.
Another problem is that occasionally the entire Outlook app enters a
weird state where I cannot read anything - standard navigations
command don't work. Up/Down, Tab or F6 does nothing. However, if I
restart NVDA, then it's working again.
Does anyone have any idea what's going on and how to fix it?

I tried narrator and it works much better - at least it responds to my
keystrokes almost instantly.

I'm running latest NVDA, latest Windows 10 and latest Outlook. I
disabled all the add-ons. This is a brand new laptop. It's got plenty
of CPU and memory, so this is not a hardware issue.

Best
Tony

Insert Control F brought up a drop-down, but erroneously returned Not Found. Does that command only search within the current container type? I was searching for text within a table that had a role of "presentation". Could thta have been the problem? Then I repeated the same search from the location bar, and it brought up a different type of a find pop-up, nad this time found the text and highlighted, but did not do anything when I tried "Say All" (via Insert Down Arrow)

If you are running nvda then the latest version of Firefox will work with the latest version of NVDA
You don’t need to run esr versions with nvda

Subject: [nvda] FireFox Update, Please Clarify?

Hello Group,

Currently, I am running FireFox fifty-two on my windows seven computer, 64-bit.
I am getting sporadic update messages to update for security reasons
to FireFox 60.3 ESR, which I take to mean FireFox quantum, extended
support release.
I have chosen, Ask later, up til the present.
If I choose to update, what will this do to my current set-up, and I
think I am running a 2017 version of NVDA, although I cannot find out
where the hell to determine for certain.

I discovered to retain passwords in memory, after running the scan on
SpyBot Search and Destroy, I chose not to fix things.
I think within the 'fix things' option is where passwords and such get
nixed from browser memory. Thanks.

Personally if you have a 64 bit version of windows 7, try to get hold of Waterfox, and install it, When you are sure this is working based as it is on the version 52 of Firefox, I would uninstall the 52 version and download version 63 of Firefox and try it out. This way, you are safe with all your bookmarks etc in waterfox as I have.
Then inf the quantum version is rubbish for what you do, you have lost nothing.
Be sure to install the 64 bit version of the new Firefox as I had no luck whatsoever attempting to get the 32 bit version to work in windows 7 with nvda.

You cannot do that on XP.
I think at the very least they need to support older versions of Firefox, after all many never bother with updates.

After seeing Shawn's message and playing with the site, this appears to be a
site problem. You may want to report it to the site.

I'm sorry if I misspelled Shawn. I didn't keep the message and can't check
the spelling.

I use Chrome without a Google account. I mean I got rid of all mine over the years so I never log in. Support for anything diminishes if updates aren't released after a while. The recent incidents with Twitter clients is just one example.

During your testing, just place headings at the start of your paragraphs, then you can use the navigation keys (h for headers) to move to the next header, which will allow you to jump where you like.  Obviously, you'd want to remove those headers when you finish testing, but that'd be the easiest way to accomplish your goals without having to change a whole lot.

accessibility support will probably go away.
You could remove the word "accessibility" and the statement will still be true as time marches on if one does not keep software updated.  It really is that simple.

Yes, certain aspects of accessibility break, but most get fixed, as stuff gets updated.  But you can be certain that accessibility will break as old software, no longer being maintained, falls further and further out of sync with what's going on in web coding and development.

This is the main reason that I pretty much insist when I work with my clients that we only use whatever the latest version of their browser of choice happens to be and that we do not use Internet Explorer except as a last resort fallback.  IE has become incompatible with a wide array of websites and many will not even let you in the proverbial door anymore if you arrive by IE.

Right now I favor either Firefox or Chrome (or a Chromium variant).  Edge still isn't there yet.
