Re: help items missing
Cearbhall O'Meadhra
Hi,
I was going to investigate the query on using the User manual when I discovered that the User Manual command reference and what’s new items are missing from my NVDA menu! All the other items are present in the help menu. I am using NVDA 2018.3.2 in Windows 10.
Any suggestions as to how to recover?
All the best,

Hi
Try the following in the browser when in focus and you know you are in the page.
The shortcut is nvda key + letter V
It will say some thing like use screen layout off this is what you want and will put the link on the same line as the text.
There is also a settings under the browse mode settings where this can be done either checked for on or unchecked for off.
See if that does it.

Re: Switch from Desktop mode laptop mode

Hi Michael use Windows+b to access the system tray and if NVDA does not appear as an icon there, press spacebar on Notification Chevron icon. This will open the overflow notification area toolbar, which you access by pressing left arrow, then use up/down arrows to move through the list.
Press spacebar on NVDA to open the NVDA menu. Press enter on Prefferences, followed by Settings. In the first control you land on, arrow down to “keyboard”, then tab into the related controls. Here you can set Caps lock as an NVDA modifier. You can also set either or both Insert keys as modifiers too. Tab to OK to save settings. Now you can use Capslock + 1 (on number row) to switch on NVDA input help You can then press any key without it activating anything, so you should be able to find you Insert key.
Cheers Chris

Hi all, this is Michael. I have a question about switching from Desktop layout to Laptop layout on a Laptop. Few weeks ago I got a shiny new computer from School. That Computer have both Jaws and NVDA installed in it. After I'm done setup Jaws the Way I liked I proceed to NVDA. I forgot that I have NVDA desktop Keyboard layout set as default. I went ahead and press Ok on do not show welcome screen when I start NVDA then I pressed the ok button. I'm using an HP Laptop. Caps lock key is not available for me. Where is the insert key on a Laptop? All feedback and answers are greatly appreciated Thanks Best Regards Michael Munn

Re: Need help with help.

Hello Max:
The table of contents is a hierarchal bulleted list. Unfortunately, the bullets are not part of the links, so when you up and down arrow (or use the I key for list navigation), you are most likely on the bullet and not on the link. Hence, hitting Enter or the spacebar will have no effect. You can check this by:
A better way to navigate the table of contents line by line is by using the tab key, which will make sure you land on links and not bullets.
I am not sure why bullets are shown in the table of contents. Since HTML allows list attributes that can hide the bullets, maybe this could be considered as an improvement next time the help document is updated.

Hi All.
It appears this list is not like some others I was on briefly. I haven’t been flamed for asking a stupid question or been told to go look it up.
Here is my problem. When I select help from the NVDA menu and then user guide my browser opens and I am on the table of contents. Then I down arrow to 5 navigating with NVDA. When I press enter or space bar nothing happens. I have to scroll the screen and click the mouse. But that’s not all. I can see that the screen changes but NVDA continues reading the table of contents. I printed out the entire user guide and put it under my CCTV reader but that takes a lot of time. I have tried the NVDA key + numpad keys and I can move to the desk top and back to the table of contents but I haven’t figured out how to move to the page which is displayed. This effects other sites as well but this seems like the best example. I am using windows 10 and Microsoft edge which should be the latest versions because automatic update is turned on. Can someone get me out of this catch 22 situation.

I see that you are using Edge so my question about
the browser being used isn't necessary to answer and others have dealt with my
questions about whether this is a general probem or not. However, my
suggestion of how to move using the find command may be useful at some time so
even if you generally don't need it, it may be useful on some page at some time
in the future. and it may be useful in other contexts. For example,
I like to save PDF documents as text files and read them in Notepad. In
such a case, using a line in a table of contents, or part of a line, the whole
line may not be suitable for some reason, is often a good way to find something
quickly.

Re: Need help with help.

If you are saying that it is
necessary to use h to move by heading before the table of contents links work,
then that is a problem with the coding of links in the Table of Contents
that needs to be investigated. Such links, that take the user to the text
desired, shouldn't require any certain procedure to be executed before pressing
enter on them will work. Are you saying that the links don't work if you
open the page and tab or read or down arrow to the link? Are you saying a
move by heading command needs to be issued first? and in which
sscreen-reader? H is move by heading in both JAWS and NVDA.

I also have the same results as Clare with my Windows 10 18.09 system. I haven't used the Dropbox add on for years and I have no issues. I wonder if the report dynamic changes and/or tool tips reporting under NVDA settings is the issue for some people.

you should be moved to that section. That doesn't work in Edge. Switch to another browser and you should be fine. Alternatively, navigate by headings until you find the part of the user guide you want.

Re: Need help with help.
Gene
I'm not sure what is causing the problem.
Which browser are you using? It sounds, from what you describe, that the
browser is moving to where it should be but the NVDA browse mode buffer isn't
updated.
One way to work around the probem is the
following:
Move to the item in the table of contents you want
to read.
Select the title of the item, you can select
the whole line, which includes its number in the outline, and copy it to
the clipboard.
For example:
4.1. Launching NVDA
Open the NVDA find dialog, used when in browse
mode. The command is insert control f. You can use either
insert.
Paste the line into the search field and press
enter. You should be moved to that part of the guide.
You can save the guide in whatever formats
your browser offers and use find in whatever you are using to read the document
in the same way.
