Re: Dropbox and nvda again

Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>

Well, We have two different machines one on 7 home the other on the main version. Both these cannot read the windows and dialogues of dropbox, though it can read the up to date, but I have asked a sighted person to look at the remote machine and they can see the preferences the share dialogue the log in dialogue which do not work on either for me.
My main issue is then, what can have caused the issue with nvda and Jaws?
My guess is that its a windows DLL which has become deregistered or for changed at some point in the past, but on both machines? That does seem awfully odd.
The one common things was that somebody inadvertently put Avast on them both some months ago, and I had to run avastclear to get rid of it. It was interfering with most stuff.
So if anyone knows which dll is implicated in not being able to read the window types these dropbox bits use, then I'm all ears and will be happy to try putting a pristine copy back.as I said before, when I did an sfc and put the stuff back it did not fix it and indeed screwed up all the email links which meant reinstalling the email clients again. Such is life in Windows I guess.

For reasons of software compatibility I cannot go windows 10 on these machines as an audio editing package which is no longer developed is in use.

Hi Group,

I also have the same results as Clare with my Windows 10 18.09 system. I haven't used the Dropbox add on for years and I have no issues. I wonder if the report dynamic changes and/or tool tips reporting under NVDA settings is the issue for some people.

Dropbox starts when Windows starts on my Windows 7 computer, and I no longer use the Dropbox add-on, but I still can read the preferences and get information about uploads and downloads, as I mentioned below. I don't have to open Dropbox from the desktop to get all this information, although seeing that Dropbox is up to date by reading the system tray icon is one indication that my computer is connected to the Internet and ready to use after I start it.

Do you have the Dropbox AddOn for NVDA activated? With Windows10 Dropbox tells me when files are received here at my end. However what I’m finding is even though Dropbox is set to start up upon Windows, I need to open the dropbox folder for Dropbox to open up and start working. I went into MsConfig, where everything seems to be alright.

It's interesting that you have this acdcessibility problem with Dropbox,
Brian, as I am still on Windows 7 here, and I can still read the Dropbox

still get help balloons to tell me a download has finished: I don't get told
that an upload is finished, but I know it has when the Dropbox icon in the
system tray includes the words "up to date".
Since you can't read the preferences yourself, I think you should get
sighted help to go through the dialogues there to see if changing some of
the settings will bring more accessibility back for you. I hope this helps!

Hi I'm not quite sure when this started to occur, but somewhere along the
line Dropbox does not seem to push out any kind of alert when files are
coming in or indeed indicate when they are being uploaded on the tray icon.
Are these preferenc choices which have been changed recently from the
default of on it used to have? Obviously since I cannot use the preferences
box, the share dialogue or other similar windows on windows 7 it seems, I
cannot check but if it can be toggled on again, then I'll get a sighted
person in to do it.
Its rather irritating as it seems the person using it at our studio does
not know when its completed uploading and I do not know when its stopped
coming in at my end.

Does anyone have experience with my.jive.com through Jive Communications?
Has anyone resolved issues when issue flash on a website?

Re: accessible drive partition resizing

Richard,

There are a number of tools that allow you to extend existing partitions into unallocated space, or shrink partitions not anywhere near to full to allow unused space to be set up as new partitions (or left unallocated).  What I can't say is which are accessible, or how accessible if only partially accessible.  The following are free, so you can afford to play with them:

               MiniTool Partition Wizard Version 10.3

You can use microsoft diskpart for just resizing, but if you want to move partitions around on a disk you'll have to use another tool.

Hi Gene

Use screen layout does not work in microsoft edge here I am using windows 10 version 1809 but does on other browsers if needed. I always have mine turned off.

The other way i would do it is either the elements list which works in the edge browser or maybe use the find command. I will make edge teh default browser and see if i can get it to do the same.

Try the following in the browser when in focus and you know you are in the page.

The shortcut is nvda key + letter V

It will say some thing like use screen layout off this is what you want and will put the link on the same line as the text.

There is also a settings under the browse mode settings where this can be done either checked for on or unchecked for off.

See if that  does it.

Re: Switch from Desktop mode laptop mode

Hi Michael

use Windows+b to access the system tray and if NVDA does not appear as an icon there, press spacebar on Notification Chevron icon.  This will open the overflow notification area toolbar, which you access by pressing left arrow, then use up/down arrows to move through the list.

Press spacebar on NVDA to  open the NVDA menu.  Press enter on Prefferences, followed by Settings.  In the first control you land on, arrow down to “keyboard”, then tab into the related controls.  Here you can set Caps lock as an NVDA modifier.  You can also set either or both Insert keys as modifiers too.  Tab to OK to save settings.  Now you can use Capslock + 1 (on number row) to switch on NVDA input help  You can then press any key without it activating anything, so you should be able to find you Insert key.

Cheers

Few weeks ago I got a shiny new computer from School. That Computer have both Jaws and NVDA installed in it.

After I'm done setup Jaws the Way I liked I proceed to NVDA.

I forgot that I have NVDA desktop Keyboard layout set as default. I went ahead and press Ok on do not show  welcome screen when I start NVDA then I pressed  the ok button.

I'm using an HP Laptop.

Caps lock key  is not available for me.

Where is the insert key on a Laptop?

Unfortunately, the bullets are not part of the links, so when you up and down arrow (or use the I key for list navigation), you are most likely on the bullet and not on the link. Hence, hitting Enter or the spacebar will have no effect. You can check this by:

  • Navigate to the table of contents line that you would like to jump to.
  • Press the tab key (or the right arrow key twice) to move to the actual chapter link and you may hear “link” followed by the starting number of the section you want to jump to.
  • At this point, if you press the left arrow, you should hear “out of link, space” and pressing let arrow again will land you on the bullet (which will vary based upon the indentation level).

A better way to navigate the table of contents line by line is by using the tab key, which will make sure you land on links and not bullets.

I am not sure why bullets are shown in the table of contents. Since HTML allows list attributes that can hide the bullets, maybe this could be considered as an improvement next time the help document is updated.

Rick

Hi All.

It appears this list is not like some others I was on briefly.  I haven’t been flamed for asking a stupid question or been told to go look it up.

Here is my problem.  When I select help from the NVDA menu and then user guide my browser opens and I am on the table of contents. Then I down arrow to 5 navigating with NVDA.  When I press enter or space bar nothing happens.  I have to scroll the screen and click the mouse.  But that’s not all.  I can see that the screen changes but NVDA continues reading the table of contents.  I printed out the entire user guide and put it under my CCTV reader but that takes a lot of time.  I have tried the NVDA key + numpad keys and I can move to the desk top and back to the table of contents but I haven’t figured out how to move to the page which is displayed.  This effects other sites as well but this seems like the best example.  I am using windows 10 and Microsoft edge which should be the latest versions because automatic update is turned on.  Can someone get me out of this catch 22 situation.

I see that you are using Edge so my question about the browser being used isn't necessary to answer and others have dealt with my questions about whether this is a general probem or not.  However, my suggestion of how to move using the find command may be useful at some time so even if you generally don't need it, it may be useful on some page at some time in the future.  and it may be useful in other contexts.  For example, I like to save PDF documents as text files and read them in Notepad.  In such a case, using a line in a table of contents, or part of a line, the whole line may not be suitable for some reason, is often a good way to find something quickly.

I can see such indications as well.  I'm becoming suspicious that this is related to the other proboem.  Something may have changed that causes this problem but it may only cause it if the other problem exists.

If you are saying that it is necessary to use h to move by heading before the table of contents links work, then that is a problem with the coding of links in the Table of Contents that needs to be investigated.  Such links, that take the user to the text desired, shouldn't require any certain procedure to be executed before pressing enter on them will work.  Are you saying that the links don't work if you open the page and tab or read or down arrow to the link?  Are you saying a move by heading command needs to be issued first?  and in which sscreen-reader?  H is move by heading in both JAWS and NVDA.

Hi Max. If you not aware already I’d learn using your NVDA hotkeys for browsing on the web. If you are also a JAWS user H for switching to different headings is one key to get you started. Now you should be able to press enter on the links within the user manual. I’ve done this successfully with Edge and Firefox. Try that out and let me know how it goes.

Hi Group,

I also have the same results as Clare with my Windows 10 18.09 system.  I haven't used the Dropbox add on for years and I have no issues.  I wonder if the report dynamic changes and/or tool tips reporting under NVDA settings is the issue for some people.

As long as you press enter on the link (and not the bullet beside it),
you should be moved to that section. That doesn't work in Edge.
Switch to another browser and you should be fine.
Alternatively, navigate by headings until you find the part of the user
guide you want.
