NVDA 2018.4 RC1 released

Just in case nobody has said it. I will. I cannot see the announcement but anyone on the beta Snaps will have been sent it today.

I'll leave it up to the usual folk to fill in the where and what etc about it.

Yes it is but it will always be. Are alpha runners being sent to the rc 1 then, seems a little counter intuitive to me. I do hope that is not the case. Certainly beta runners are but I do not think Alphas are.
By using the rc one you are in fact going backwards.

Using Thunderbird Chat

Hi All,

I was wondering about using Thunderbird's chat functionality. I ask because I'm having trouble selecting a contact to sent a message because I can't tab to it and object navigation doesn't work. I used to use Instantbird, but it's unsupported now and much of the Instantbird code is part of Thunderbird.

Thanks,

Noah

I tried it myself and I am experiencing the same thing poster #4 is. Tabbing is not fluid nor consistent, there's tons of unlabeled buttons and edit fields when in the settings, I went back to my TB in Dropbox I have. I tried to find the developers contact information as well, but the contact page would not load for me. It gave me a 404 error.

The issue is that windows updates are automatic, if you turn it off you put
your system at risk.

Personally I've used it on occasions, though I've changed the pitch to an A note rather than the default, as the default pitch sounds rather painful to me.

Interestingly, today when I updated to the new alpha as a portable on my windows 7 machine, with neither of these add ons present, when it had dealt with the incompatible add ons issue AGAIN, it then failed to restart the software, Nvda Locked and I could not boot into any version. I had to restart the machine.

Subject: [nvda] For users of SPL Studio and/or Windows 10 app Essentials add-ons: emergency patches for better compatibility with recent NvDA alpha snapshots for standalone update users #AddonRelease

Hi all,

For users of StationPlaylist Studio and Windows 10 App Essentials add-ons:
an emergency patch has been released for these add-ons to resolve
compatibility issues with recent NVDA alpha releases. Specifically, these
patches resolves the following:

Suppose you are using a recent NVDA alpha snapshot and one or both of the
add-ons mentioned. If you are not using Add-on Updater add-on, these add-ons
will use standalone add-on update feature that ships with add-ons
themselves. The problem is that, with this set up, you won't be able to
check for updates for add-ons if you're running NVDA alpha build 16401 or
later. Also, after managing to update these add-ons, you won't get restart
prompt.

Today's patches fixes this scenario. If you are in the situation I
described, you need to apply today's patches manually (go to
addons.nvda-project.org, locate the add-on entries in question, and download
stable version).

Note: today's patches are not applicable if:

1. You are using NVDA 2018.3.2 and/or 2018.4 beta.
2. You are using Add-on Updater 18.12.2 or later.

Even then, I advise applying the patch when Add-on Updater says there are
updates available.

Speaking of standalone add-on update checks from StationPlaylist Studio and
Windows 10 App Essentials, they will be retired by February 2019 in favor of
Add-on Updater (see a post I sent out about this a few days ago).

Cheers,

Joseph

Its as if its missing the info it needs due to some kind of delay.
Its very similar to when a browser opens and it cannot see the page till it is refreshed by a pull down menu. It was not so bad in the last nvda stable, at least not for me.
I have shortcuts set up for oft opened folders which is when I see it most often.

No, but I tend to open drives and paths via the run dialogue. So so far not having the issue here.

That's a different feature than the beeps you can cycle on with NVDA key s.  Its those that members are expressing skepticism about.

I don't get any beeps at all in the command prompt when text is scrolling, so either the beeps mode doesn't work in the command prompt, or my beeps are broken.
