Re: Problem installing latest update

Hi Janet,

As Joseph asked, did you get the UAC dialog asking if you want to allow the program to make changes to your PC?  If you aren't seeing the UAC dialog, or aren't responding to it, that would generate a log like the one you included.  See Joseph's message for a workaround.

Kind regards

Quentin.

Hi Janet,

We'll need a bit more information to help you.  One of the most common reasons is that when you run the installer, it brings up a User Account Control (UAC) dialog.  The dialog warns that the program wants to make changes to your PC and you must accept it to continue.  That's a standard Windows warning when you install any software, but occasionally it appears behind other windows.  If the program is installing (the progress bar is beeping) but you haven't answered that dialog yet, try using ALT+TAB to find it (if it doesn't appear on top of everything, it often appears at the back, as in the last window in the list when you ALT+TAB).  If you don't respond to it within about 20 seconds, it will close and the install will fail.

Kind regards

Problem installing latest update

Hi Quentin,
Thanks for the response. I tried reinstalling the update and it failed again. I alt-tabbed periodically throughout the set-up process and the dialog didn’t show. I just got the
error message advising me that the installation had failed and to check the log viewer. Any other suggestions? If it would help, I could send you a copy of what the log viewer says. Another thing, I installed the update through the “check for updates” under the Help menu in the NVDA control panel.

As the subject line says, I just received nvda version 2018.4. I’m excited to check out all the new features,  including the reporting of reply/forward of messages in outlook. That will probably be my favorite feature because I use outlook all the time. I can’t wait to see what else is new.

Re: using Emoji

Traditional SMS text messages I think can only contain text, as in only original ASCII characters.  Most phones and networks automatically convert messages with emoji (or with photos attached etc) to MMS messages in order to send them.

For E-Mail, I haven't looked lately, but the same may apply for sending "plain text" messages.

Re: Firefox browsing bug in NVDA 2018.4

Have you restarted the computer after installing / updating NVDA?  It's amazing some of the weird things that happen when everything else is working seemingly normally in that period between updating and restarting.

If you've done that, are you using any add-ons?  If so, are they up to date (Joseph made an add-on updater which is an add-on to check for out of date add-ons which can help with that).  Next, try restarting NVDA with add-ons disabled and see if that helps.

Failing all that, if you could send me a copy of your log, I can have a look.

Kind regards

Quentin.

If you check out the following web page on my website there is a ttutorial on how to select them etc and put them into a email or word processor.

There were changes in the latest version with nvda and windows 10 which changes how you navigate that same panel etc which i have written up but not posted yet it also needs about the synth been supported etc that one I can also post up there later on tonight on the same page.

I have some other material to go up there just needed some time to do it.

Just jump down to the section about them.  It does not as mentioned have the latest navigation for it and synth but will tonight.

After reading the message, I was able to press Tab to get to the Reply button, then Tab a few more times to get to the edit field where I'm now typing my reply. However, I noticed earlier while proofing a post on my blog at https://abbiescorner.wordpress.com, when I pressed Tab within the post, it took me to the top of the post. I updated my NVDA just yesterday, so will see what develops.

To get a log there are many ways.  Firstly open up a blank copy of notepad.
Go to the  part of windows not working as it should and do an NVDA/F1. This
should open the log viewer with the  last entries the bits of diagnostic
info needed. However go up the file until you can hear the part where you go
into the non working part and  select all the file from there to the bottom
of the  file and cut and paste it into notepad, and save it as something
meaningful, in case of any crashes.
Get back to the email software, start a message with the sub line of your
problem in this group first,  put the details of the windows version etc
and the problem and then cut and paste the contents of the notepad to the
bottom of the message.
Before doing this I would advise that you go to nvda settings and general
and select the debug level for your log as this will have more details in it
before you attempt to show the issue.

I hope this makes sense.
If somebody here  can get a good look and duplicate the issue then fine, if
not then you might have some odd windows issue.

If nobody can resolve it you may need to get an account on github web site
and raise a new issue for it.
However I'd suggest trying the new  release version if you have not
already. also try to test with all add ons disabled firs as some odd things
can happen if one is old or misbehaving for whatever reason.
