Re: Firefox browsing bug in NVDA 2018.4
Quentin Christensen
With NVDA running, the easiest way to get the log is to first ensure you have repeated the steps to cause the problem, then press NVDA+F1 to open the log viewer, CONTROL+A to select all, CONTROL+C to copy and then come to an email and CONTROL+V to paste. Before doing that, if you set NVDA's log level to debug, it gives us the most information - you can do that by pressing NVDA+CONTROL+G to go to the general settings, TAB to log level and select DEBUG, then press ENTER. Then do the steps which cause problems before opening the log and copying it to send. Kind regards Quentin.

Thank you Abby. With the lack of responses to my question, I figured it was somewhat isolated to me. If you don't mind experimenting a bit with your installation, go to the official NVDA site: The main page will be good enough as it's site wide for me. Use the headings shortcut, the letter h, to go down a couple headings. From there, and it doesn't matter if you do it immediately, or up and down arrow a bit, tab once. If you hear the following words, NV Access Empowering lives through non-visual access to technology You'll know that you've been returned to the top of the page. Any other response means that you're not reproducing the same thing I am here. Thank you. Travis

Hello/Still Noticing Slight Performance Decrease When Navigating with NVDA 2018.4
David Goldfield
My guess is that nobody else is experiencing this issue as I'm seeing no other posts about this. When I navigate by links with K or shift K in Thunderbird and even, to an extent, in Chrome I notice a slight slowdown in responsiveness compared to 2018.3. For a short time I thought it was my computer as I was sometimes seeing this occur in 2018.3.2 but,
in general, 2018.3.2 is still somewhat faster. I sent Quentin a debug file with all addons disabled but I'm assuming there was nothing obvious in the output as I haven't heard back. I notice this with Espeak. On a faster machine I do not notice this but on
a slower Athlon 2.9 GHZ there is a slight but noticeable difference. Just wondering if anybody has noticed this and if something changed in the code regarding navigation? --

Re: Problem installing latest update
Gene
In Windows 7, UAC always plays a sound when it
comes up. I would think that would be the case in
Windows 10 as well. Even if a screen-reader doesn't read it until you do certain things to cause it to read, if you listen for the sound when you begin to do something such as install something that is expected to cause UAC to come up, that would, I would think, make things easier and faster. If you hear the sound, you shouldn't have to do anything, whether your screen-reader reads the dialog or not, except to issue the command alt y. I use NVDA on my Windows 7 machine as a portable program. It can't read the UAC command for technical reasons I won't go into here and don't completely know. But the sound plays every time. I just answer alt y. Gene

Hi Janet, As Joseph asked, did you get the UAC dialog asking if you want to allow the program to make changes to your PC? If you aren't seeing the UAC dialog, or aren't responding to it, that would generate a log like the one you included. See Joseph's message for a workaround. Kind regards Quentin.

Hi Quentin,
Thanks for the response. I tried reinstalling the update and it failed
again. I alt-tabbed periodically throughout the set-up process and the dialog
didn’t show. I just got the
error message advising me that the installation
had failed and to check the log viewer. Any other suggestions? If it would help,
I could send you a copy of what the log viewer says. Another thing, I installed
the update through the “check for updates” under the Help menu in the NVDA

Re: using Emoji
Quentin Christensen
Traditional SMS text messages I think can only contain text, as in only original ASCII characters. Most phones and networks automatically convert messages with emoji (or with photos attached etc) to MMS messages in order to send them. For E-Mail, I haven't looked lately, but the same may apply for sending "plain text" messages.

I am finding the insertion of Emoji into a Email works only part of the time. If sending a text message to a phone it only works if it is a mms message.

Re: Firefox browsing bug in NVDA 2018.4

Have you restarted the computer after installing / updating NVDA? It's amazing some of the weird things that happen when everything else is working seemingly normally in that period between updating and restarting. If you've done that, are you using any add-ons? If so, are they up to date (Joseph made an add-on updater which is an add-on to check for out of date add-ons which can help with that). Next, try restarting NVDA with add-ons disabled and see if that helps. Failing all that, if you could send me a copy of your log, I can have a look. Kind regards Quentin.
