What errors do you get when you load the synth?
Does anything show up at the end of the log (accessed with log viewer

Hello all, especially NVDA Support,

I’m having a problem with the latest update. It seemed to download OK after I got the prompt, but it wouldn’t install. It asked me to review the log view which I did, but it doesn’t make any sense to me. I looked for the software in my download folder to install it manually, but it wasn’t there. Any help with this would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Jan

This is a relative new mess Dropbox has created. Ther buttons do not show up and the message itself is seldon one alt tab away from where you are. All I do know though is that if you delete stuff with a command file ie batch file this problem never arrises.

Might there be an NVDA keystroke, or AddOn I’m not aware of, that’ll let me go on the fly to an alert (Dropbox for instance, when it asks if you want to remove the file or files from everywhere during a deleting of)? Shift+Alt+tab and Alt+Tab to try and get to these alerts can sometimes be a hit and miss affaire. Thanks for info.

Re: Advantages of NVDA over narrator on public terminals

Hi,

I guess you do not run a huge network like they do, and you are not having to worry about security of a network of that size. I could not see them updating NVDA 4 times a year on 400 computers every 3 months.

It is not a home network which of course you could update more regularly and also use add ons etc. I know that on the APNK network you can use your portable stable signed version which might be more up to date.

Your alternative  I guess is Narrator for places who do not have NVDA. I applaud Christchurch City Libraries for their initiative to enhance accessibility for those who need audio on a computer.

I have not asked them about portable access yet. I think it is better to have a slightly older version (which will be updated at least yearly around February) that is stable than none at all.

I guess it doesn't matter if they are all jaws users or havn't used nvda before, but its just that roling out nvda in its current form is a waste of time now.

This means that NVDA is now installed at 19 libraries across Christchurch! (This is about 390 computers which are to be updated annually from now on).

In the link to the FAQ page (which says about accessibility options on their computers), NVDA is now on that list! You can not start it with a shortcut, however you can still start it quite easily through the search box by typing in NVDA and pressing Enter. The Windows log on option has been disabled. This is where it says Use NVDA on the Windows logon screen.

Narrator in Windows 10 is considerably more capable from discussions I've seen here than Narrator on Windows 7.  I have Windows 7.  Narrator is just the shell of a screen-reader in that version of Windows, alright for emergencies where you lose the use of a competent screen-reader for some reason but it would be next to useless on a public terminal because it is next to useless everywhere.

also, I know that Narrator is moving toward using more standard screen-reader commands in Windows 10.  I don't know how far that move has gone but I would think that a lot more screen-reader users would regularly use NVDA.  There is a certain level of reasonable access and reasonable standardization and unless Narrator has changed very dramatically recently in Windows 10, it doesn't meet those needs.  Plus, from discussions I've seen here, Narrator is limited to Microsoft programs in terms of providing reasonable or something like reasonable access.  Unless these public terminals provide only Microsoft programs, that is another area of inaccessibility when using Narrator.  The blind user would be either fully or mostly limited to Microsoft programs on the machine.  If the machine has other programs on it, it appears from discussions I've seen on list, that Narrator wouldn't work adequately, if at all.

Hi guys,

I got asked this question about the advantages of NVDA over Narrator on public terminals where ever these may be...

I am talking about public terminals that the sighted can use where ever these may be. Places like libraries, information centres airports (where these terminals are) as well etcetera. The commercial screen readers are not in the picture because of price.

The question is below:

" My question to you is what advantages would it give our blind or visually impaired customers having both Windows 10 Narrator and NVDA available to use on public computers? I would be interested in supporting installing it at if there were advantages and we could work thru any technical issues. Let me know what you think".

This same question could also come up at any IT department that is approached to install NVDA to a public terminal (where ever these may be). The above is used as an example.

I am guessing that for any technical information - that could be pointed towards the developers of the NVDA project.

They could be using a windows 7 machine right up to Windows 10.

Looking forward to your feedback on advantages of NVDA over Narrator. Thanks everyone.

Hello Adriani,
Thank you for your reply.
No, I have not thought of, but this is more worth it because everything is back in order.
The error was gone without doing anything.
Very strange !!!
Have a good day.
Best regards.
Paul.

Hello Paul,

did you try to use the com fixing tool in NVDA menu / Extras? To me it seems that some com dlls cannot be registered.

Best

Re: dectalk express u s b

What errors do you get when you load the synth?
Does anything show up at the end of the log (accessed with log viewer
after you load it)?

Re: Hello/Still Noticing Slight Performance Decrease When Navigating with NVDA 2018.4

Quentin Christensen

David,

Sorry for not replying.  I didn't see anything obvious initially in looking at your logs and set them aside to have a closer look at. I'll have another look today.

Quentin.

My guess is that nobody else is experiencing this issue as I'm seeing no other posts about this.

When I navigate by links with K or shift K in Thunderbird and even, to an extent, in Chrome I notice a slight slowdown in responsiveness compared to 2018.3. For a short time I thought it was my computer as I was sometimes seeing this occur in 2018.3.2 but, in general, 2018.3.2 is still somewhat faster. I sent Quentin a debug file with all addons disabled but I'm assuming there was nothing obvious in the output as I haven't heard back. I notice this with Espeak. On a faster machine I do not notice this but on a slower Athlon 2.9 GHZ there is a slight but noticeable difference. Just wondering if anybody has noticed this and if something changed in the code regarding navigation?

Windows 10 home 64-bit.

Firefox 64.0, 64-bit.

NVDA 2018.4

While I would experience this behavior on past versions of NVDA, it is
now constant.

Thanks.

Re: Firefox browsing bug in NVDA 2018.4

Thank you Abby. With the lack of responses to my question, I figured it was somewhat isolated to me.

If you don't mind experimenting a bit with your installation, go to the official NVDA site:

https://www.nvaccess.org/

The main page will be good enough as it's site wide for me.

Use the headings shortcut, the letter h, to go down a couple headings. From there, and it doesn't matter if you do it immediately, or up and down arrow a bit, tab once.

If you hear the following words,

NV Access Empowering lives through non-visual access to technology

You'll know that you've been returned to the top of the page.

Any other response means that you're not reproducing the same thing I am here.

Thank you.

Travis

I'm afraid I'm not reproducing this here, either, at least not on the groups.io page for this message. After reading the message, I was able to press Tab to get to the Reply button, then Tab a few more times to get to the edit field where I'm now typing my reply. However, I noticed earlier while proofing a post on my blog at https://abbiescorner.wordpress.com, when I pressed Tab within the post, it took me to the top of the post. I updated my NVDA just yesterday, so will see what develops.

Re: Hello/Still Noticing Slight Performance Decrease When Navigating with NVDA 2018.4

You can run both versions and test them. If you see a difference, then
there is one.

When I navigate by links with K or shift K in Thunderbird and even, to
an extent, in Chrome I notice a slight slowdown in responsiveness
compared to 2018.3. For a short time I thought it was my computer as I
was sometimes seeing this occur in 2018.3.2 but, in general, 2018.3.2 is
still somewhat faster. I sent Quentin a debug file with all addons
disabled but I'm assuming there was nothing obvious in the output as I
haven't heard back. I notice this with Espeak. On a faster machine I do
not notice this but on a slower Athlon 2.9 GHZ there is a slight but
noticeable difference. Just wondering if anybody has noticed this and if
something changed in the code regarding navigation?

Hi all I can now read the lists of items with column browser enabled with NVDA 2018.4. I don’t know if the new version now has access to new UIA stuff or not, but its now working. It also works with today’s JAWS 2019 update as well.
