I sometimes read matireal of technology, such as software user guide in html format, then practice on the software along with the guide. When do this with NVDA, if I switch focus to other program to do something, then switch back to the browser, focus usually not position at the place where I left it so I must find that position to continue reading. Using Windows 10, NVDA 2018.4, Internet Explorer version 11. Anyone has same problem, and know how to solve? Please help me. I also have Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, and Google Chrome on my laptop so I could switch to those browser if needed. Any help would be appreciated. Re: Best Wordprocesor

Hi. First, I admit that my computer is most definitely not the fastest machine around. In my case, there is definite sluggishness when using NVDA with Microsoft Word 365. This is not only true with startup, which isn't all that bad, but it particularly manifests
itself when moving the cursor to edit or review text. In my case, there is a noticeable delay which has pretty much caused me to avoid using NVDA with Word on this machine until version 2018.4 introduced experimental UIA support. Minimizing the window and
putting Word into draft mode helps to speed things up somewhat. Enabling the experimental UIA support has made quite a difference for me with 2018.4 and I can now use Word with a reasonable response time when navigating text with arrow keys. Someone on another
list also reported the same issue. I pretty much did much of my word processing with LibreOffice for certain tasks, which behaves normally. On faster machines which I use at work, however, navigating in Word is responsive and navigation behaves as expected. David Goldfield, Assistive Technology Specialist

In Chrome, there is a setting to block pop-ups which should be on by default. It might be helpful to access your Chrome settings just to ensure that the setting is set to blocking popups.
1. When in Chrome, press alt-F for the Chrome menu. 2. Press S for Settings. 3. Activate the Advanced button. 4. Activate the Content Settings button. 5. Look for the Popup button or you could press insert-ctrl-F to bring up the NVDA find dialog and type the word "pop" without the quotes. Make sure that it is set to "blocked." If popups still occur could you tell us a little more about the type of pages which are appearing? Does this behavior happen when you're viewing specific sites? If the problem occurs more often than not I do think that it would be very good to perform a scan of your system to see if any malware has been detected. Which antivirus or antimalware programs do you use? For a second opinion I'd recommend installing the free version of MalwareBytes to see if it detects anything.

I seem to recall we may have discussed popups with
Chrome before. I think its adware. I don't recall hearing about what
you are discussing in Chrome in cases other than adware.
If you don't want to investigate that problem, then
it would be a good good idea to start using Firefox. If you can use
Internet Explorer and if it works properly on the sites you want to use, you may
want to just use it for now, but over time, Internet Explorer will work with
increasingly fewer sites.

We don't know if there is a problem with speech or if the program stops running. You can't assume that just because speech stops, that the problem is with speech. When this happens, run Narrator or another screen-reader. Then try opening the NVDA menu. Does the menu open? If so, the problem has something to do with speech while NVDA is running. It may be a synthesizer problem or it may be an NVDA problem. If the menu doesn't open, then NVDA is no longer running which is an entirely different problem.

If I need a word processor, I generally use Microsoft Word, since I usually have to deal with change tracking and comments. These aren't accessible in LibreOffice yet, unless there has been an update in that area recently.

However, when I'm writing a paper or a series of slides for a presentation, I use a text editor and prepare te documents either in Markdown for conversion with Pandoc, or in LaTeX. I occasionally edit HTML as well. For anything complex (a paper, for example), LaTeX is my first choice. I use Git to maintain it under revision control, and Emacs as my text editor. All of this works under Linux or Windows. On the Mac, TextMate seems to be the most accessible text editor at the moment. Notepad++ is another option with Windows and NVDA, though it isn't my first preference.

Thank you for your compliments. I'm always
pleased when a disagreement works out well.
I don't mind if people write about matters on list
now, but if the discussion goes on and involves others so it develops into a
somewhat prominent thread, I would take it to the owner's list but your exchange
on list didn't bother me.
I almost never get comments
about my moderation, perhaps in part because the list almost never needs
moderation.
Perhaps this exchange will
encourage others to comment when they have an objection or a compliment.
But if people do comment more frequently, I'll start asking that comments be
sent off list if they become more common. But for now, comments on list
may encourage others to do so.

If this is your last word on this topic,
fine. that's your decision. You have not given good, well supported
opinions demonstrating that what I've said about using the intended commands for
their intended purposes is wrong. If you wish to do so, fine. If you
wish to say that that's what you want to do in your own use, fine. Do
whatever you want in your own use. If, however, you are saying, as
it appears you may be, that you would advocate that others follow this practice,
then I disagree with you vehemently and I will say that on list.
