Re: word skipping pages

Brian's Mail list account

Hi yes this email has just dropped through my time warp.
The thing is if you are writing your own documents you can of course configure word to just show one page per screen, but it seems as if when they come in from other sources they tend to use the default of two.
Myself, I'd like somebody to improve word compatibility so that view or template did not really matter.

this is another issue ignored by the NVDA devs, which has existed for a very long time, and which also exists in adobe reader.

Did windows include any new drivers for the sound hardware? I ask as somebody told me they had an HP laptop doing the same thing. No idea quite why this should have such an effect though.

Hi,

I just updated Win10 to 1809 and now NVDA is stuttering and sputtering that
I have to restart it every two or three minutes.

Anyone has observed this? Any suggestion please?

Many thanks

Re: word skipping pages

Brian's Mail list account

This sounds like the old zoon level bug to me. If you get into the habit of setting zoom level to 200, I find that word then defaults to one page per screen and you can cursor around by just going down.
I'm guessing here that this issue has something to do with browse and focus modes where one goes to three as two is up and left, but I still do not like this way that nvda does things as it can mean you need to customise word every time.
Surely if this were to follow, one would end up cursoring left into page 2, but that does not happen does it?
If anyone out there would care to comment on this issue it would be good. Unfortunately this is the last message in my inbox so if others are out there they may well explain further, in which case thanks in advance!

Weather plus notice!

Adriano Barbieri

Hi to every one,

Just got back yesterday evening from vacation , well I like many of you have noticed, Weather Plus is no longer working.
The reason is that Yahoo Weather on the 3rd of January has changed the link and how to use its API.
https://developer.yahoo.com/weather/
This has already happened in the past, and does not depend on WP unfortunately.
We hope that we can find a solution as soon as possible.

Regards
Adriano

There may be a technical reason but enter is the documented command for both screen-readers. If you use undocumented commands they may or may not work as expected in different situations. It's an interesting technical question why using space works but it isn't a good idea to use space instead of enter for following links. Another reason for this is that enter is the command to follow a link when in forms mode. If you get in the habit of using space in browse mode, which doesn't work in forms mode, you may forget and have problems. At times, in order to successfully follow a link, you have to switch to forms mode and then follow it. It's better to use the one command intended for both uses.

Also, if people use the links list, space doesn't follow the link.

For comparison, I fired up Jaws 2018 and it too activates certain links with
the space bar as well as enter, so I see this as a commonplace thing. Say
what you will about Jaws, it is supposedly the standard for corporate and
people in work, and if it also has this action then it has to be for a
reason.

I don't know why the space bar activates links, nor do I know if it does in
all cases. It isn't the documented command so you can't be sure it will
work in all intended cases.

When you are in forms mode, you are interacting directly with the browser.
Any commands you give will do what they would do if no screen-reader were
present. When you are in browse mode, you are interacting with your
screen-reader and commands are routed through the screen-reader.

Hello, I noticed that while in "browse" mode while focus is on a link, if I
press the space bar, instead of the page scrolling down (as usually occurs
when the space bar is pressed on a web page), the link is activated as it
would be had I pressed the Enter key. This does not happen when I am in
"forms" mode. Does anyone know why this occurs?

Re: Weather Plus 4.8 update available

Hi,

No matter which WeatherPlus add-on version you get, the add-on won’t perform its primary function because the web service it depends on is no more. Adriano wrote a reply to Sarah’s question about defining cities (I have some feelings about the way the larger issue is being handled, but out of respect for the author and the tone of the community, I’ll talk to him privately).

Cheers,

Joseph

Actually, there was no body to the message and it seemed to be a reply to another unrelated message concerning Weather Plus.

In any case, I tried updating all the normal ways: the add on itself, the add on updater and now even the add on home page itself.  The last  update for the add on on the home page is January 1, 2019.  I downloaded and installed it anyway and it still doesn't work.

Sorry for the confusion.  I now have the installed version working so that issue is closed.  I recovered the portable install from the recycle bin and I am going to try to get it working now that I better understand the unzip program.  I really don’t need it but it’s a challenge.

Hi Max

Your posts are somewhat confusing.  First you say you unzipped the program but can’t use it again because you can’t find it, then you say it is installed and working.  There are 2 versions of Virtual Recorder, a portable version which you unzip and use without installation, and an installer version which is installed as a Windows program.  Which version do you now have working on your computer?

Hmmm.  As I reflect on it that seems to be what I did.  There’s no point in worrying about that now.  The program is installed and working.  As some old guy once said, all’s well that ends well.

I don't know how you unzip files.  if you do it properly, you should have a completely new folder, separate from the zip file, with all the files in it.  It doesn't sound to me as though you did that.  It sounds to me as though you opened the archive and ran the exe file from inside of the archive.

After I downloaded and ran the zip file I had the unzipping program on my screen.  I pressed the extract button.  That showed the virtual recorder.exe file.  When I ran it I got the recorder dialog on the screen but I could only use it once because after I closed everything I couldn’t find the exe file again.

Since the link to the installed version came from the same site, this was, presumably, an installed version modified by Carlos.  I didn't recall there being one so whatever I may have said was regarding the version direct from the developer which evidently has accessibility problems.

As far as portable programs are concerned, I don't know why you had problems with the portable program but I prefer to use portable versions of programs when available.  Did you unzip the program before using it?  For those trying this or other portable programs who haven't used them before, if they come as a zip file, you must unzip the program before using it.

I generally prefer to use portable programs if available.  For one thing, they are portable.  I can simply copy the folder onto a thumb drive and place a copy onto another computer if I want to use it there.  No changes are made to the system.  I always use portable versions of firefox because if the copy I'm using becomes corrupted, I can keep a backup copy of the program and simply replace the corrupted program with a copy of the backup program.  I don't have to worry about maintenance or creating a new profile or anything else.  And, as I said, I can copy it to another computer when I wish.

In this case, there may be one or more available features in the installed version so someone might wat to use the installed version.  I don't know what those features might be and they aren't important to me because the portable version does everything I want.  I suspect that if there are more available features they would be something minor such as being able to specify where files are saved.

Now that’s more like it.  It was the usual install experience with location, start menu, and desk top icon.  You scared me off from the installed version with all that talk about bugs.  I did a little recording and I could find the files and play them back.  Ten minutes after two and all is well.

I sent two links yesterday, one for each version.  Here is the message I sent last night:

Gene

Here is a link to the portable version of the program which is still available from the site where Carlos hosted useful resources.  The vollunteer who hosted the programs for Carlos is still doing so.
http://opopanax.net/download/Virtual_Recorder_Portable.zip
Presumably, this is the latest version.

There is an installable version, also, I assume, modified by Carlos.  I don't know if the installable version does anything the portable version doesn't do.  Perhaps it allows you to specify where you want files saved.

Also, because of the problems a user reported with the installed version, presumably from the developer's site, it may be that some people have problems with the installed version that won't with the portable. version

Here is the link for the installable version from the same site:
http://opopanax.net/download/Setup_VirtualRecorder.exe

How do I, or anyone for that matter, tell the difference between the install and the noninstall versions.  I get it.  The noninstall version just copies the files but doesn't register the program with windows.  That must have been the one I downloaded.  I have dumped the message with the URL so will someone please send me a good URL?

Hi
Are you sure you ran the install version?  There is a non-install version as well which I gave up on because Windows Defender kept moving it into quarantine.  Under W10, I downloaded and installed the install version and have been using it without problems.  The installed version definitely shows up in the list of installed programs, and creates a desktop item.  You are better using the install version anyway as some of the features cannot be used in the non-install version.

Well, I'll bet lots of others are having the same problem but nobody wants to be the first.  OK, I'll be that person.  The virtual recorder install program didn't create an entry in the start menu or a desk top icon or an icon in the applications bar as mentioned in the readme file.  I tried to start it with the command line but that has been changed and I don't know how to access it anymore.  When I had it running after the installation I made a test recording but the directory where it said it put the recording doesn't show up in windows explorer.  Maybe I should forget it and find another program.

Yes but virtual recorder does not involve fiddling with sound card settings and is free so you can use the editor of choice.

OK.  I thought it was a strange coincidence that the very same ad was being added to someone’s email message as had popped up on my computer.  The adds only appear when I am running chrome which is why I have stopped using it.  I don’t get them under any other conditions.  I have checked several times and the popups option is turned off but they keep popping.  I am actually happier with fire fox than I was with chrome so it’s no longer an issue. I am a careful browser.  I never go to a site unless two conditions are met.  1) Someone I know recommends it. And 2)  The recommending message actually came from that person.  I regularly get site recommendations from friends and relatives who have passed away.  Needless to say they get permanently deleted.

It sounds suspiciously to me as though you have AdWare on your machine which is causing popups to appear when they shouldn't be.  do popups keep coming up as you browse?  do they come up when you are not browsing as well, when the browser is closed?

It appears the advertising in the message you are discussing comes from Juno.com.  I didn't know they were still around but I just looked up the site and it is.  These appear to be commercials Juno is placing in the e-mail from third party advertisers.

I doubt that you being signed into Chrome would cause such popups.  I never signed into Chrome so I doubt it but I don't know it.

Hello. Everyone. Thanks for your help and the Dropbox download. Do you know what is the official website for the virtual recorder program? Well I did finally figured it out based on playing with audacity for a half hour. I do have everything set correctly and if I want to hear what I have recorded through the computer I have to unplug everything from the sound card since my desktop PC does have an internal speaker. I did turn it down so it is not too loud so I can hear what I am recording and don't have to bother other people after I am done I do play it back it sounds great. I am going to get a second computer and see how that goes since on that one am going to put games on that machine and maybe some audio editing software. I think whatever works for the certain person depending what they want to do there are a lot of options out there. So just thought I would give an update.

Nice. Is there a way to include a list of locations? I normally
check 3-5 locations for weather to keep an eye on my friends and
family in said locations. I just grabbed the add on and will install
it as soon as I can.
Take care

Good morning and happy new Year to every one,
Changes in this version:
#Changes in the Weather Plus Settings window:
•Added new checkbox;
"Use only weather effects";
This allows you to filter out all other environmental effects.
•Improved random playback and added 71 new sound effects;
You will need to update them by clicking twice in "enable audio
effects"
check box.
•The volume type assigned by the user, between the general and
current audio
volume, now is maintained when the configuration is saved.
•Removed useless sound during selection text in edit box by pressing
control+a.
•Improved readability into help window invokable with F1
function key.
•Added new compatibility flag for NVDA 2019.1, and the current alpha
versions.
Weather Plus can update alone, however, it is possible to
download manually
from the following links:
http://www.nvda.it/files/plugin/weather_plus4.8.nvda-addon
or from page:
http://www.nvda.it/weather-plus/
or from page:
https://addons.nvda-project.org/addons/weatherPlus.en.html
Make sure that the extension of the downloaded file is correct,
otherwise
rename it in .nvda-addon.
