hardware is 32- or 64-bit) then it will not use more than 3Gbytes of RAM. This tends to give disappointing performance when running a screenreader alongside other applications, as well as being a waste of money for the unusable RAM. Antony.

Isn't there a 32 bit version of Windows 10?
What if the machine is a 32bit machine?
Also, what version of Windows is currently being
run? You may just have minor annoyances when Microsoft imposes two full
upgrades on you a year. Microsoft may slow the schedule down but we don't
know if it will, but some people have more annoying problems or even serious
ones after an imposed Microsoft upgrade on occasion. So my question is,
why do you want to upgrade? If the reason isn't pressing, you might want
to leave things as they are.

Re: Slightly OT: Hardware speech synthesizer
Brian K. Lingard
Dear Brian & List:
There is a USB edition of the Triple Talk hardware synthesizer. While many devices have their highest Baud rate as 9,600 BPS, newer Uarts such as the 16550 ones can easily run at 115,200 BPS, this over a plain old RS-232C serial port. Helps if you use hardware flow control rather than DC1/DC33 XX-On/x-Off software flow control. Hardware flow control is instant; X-on/x-off has to be processed by the sending computer. Have no stats on what really nice-sounding voices such as the ones that shipped with the Dec Talk synthesizers do to CPU usage. If you find you want to use a really nice synthetic voice, you can purchase a hardware synthesizer; however, not all hardware synthesizers have really nice voices. With modern PC speeds what they are, buying a PC with a moderately fast to super-fast CPU should be more than adequate to handle any synthesizer voice. Brian K. I installed clips ide. I found it very much accessible. I can easily use it. I want to know few things regarding this ide. Do I need to change any settings? Re: Not starting computer

Firstly, do you really mean that if you press the delete key after that
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
message appears, nothing else happens? If that is true, I think your only recourse is to take the machine to a computer hardware repair shop and ask them to find out what's failed. If that is not true, and pressing delete does get you into the Bios setup screen, then the two most likely causes for the machine not starting further which I can think of are: 1. Bios battery dead; computer has forgotten what disks it has installed and therefore doesn't try booting from them. Diagnosis - go into Bios settings and check date / time. If it's correct, this idea is probably not the correct one. If date / time are incorrect (and I mean *really* incorrect - by years), then this is likely what's gone wrong. Solution - replace Bios battery, reconfigure Bios for the disks you have, restart machine. 2. Hard disk failure; Bios tries to boot disk but disk has become corrupted or has failed completely. Diagnosis - boot machine from a USB stick or CD - a live Linux distro would be good - see whether the hard disk gets detected and whether it can be read. Alternatively, take the hard disk out, connect it to another machine which can boot up, and see whether your disk can be read. Solution - replace or reformat the hard disk and restore your files from snapshot / backup. By the way, this is definitely not an NVDA question. Regards, Antony.

NVDA issue with trees on Chrome
Ajay Sharma
Hey there,
I've been observing for quite a long time that NVDA does not find tree views while in browse mode on Chrome, although it does find with Tabbing. On firefox / IE, NVDA announce "tree view" upon reaching the tree, after that upon pressing Enter or Space we could interact with it, so I am curious if any thing is being done for addressing this issue. As there are more and more electron based apps are now coming in day to day activities, which use chromium as engine, there all the trees get skipped, which makes it hard to use. Cheers! Ajay

Re: Screen Curtain and Virtual Review: new versions are out
#addonrelease
Hi, A proof of concept is a product that demonstrates an idea. In this case, NVDA issue 7857 deals with a suggestion to add screen curtain functionality to NVDA, and this work is being done by a developer in Europe. The whole idea behind Screen Curtain add-on was to gather feedback from the NVDA community about this very feature. Based on feedback from users, this European developer made some changes to this feature which is slowly taking shape at the moment. In fact, Screen Curtain isn’t the first proof of concept add-on. That honor belongs to Control Usage Assistant (now discontinued), an add-on developed by me that added context-sensitive help messages for various controls. Nor Add-on Updater will be the latest proof of concept add-on that has graduated to stable release status, nor Windows 10 App Essentials the only one where the add-on is used to do early field testing for eventual NVDA pull requests. In case of Add-on Updater, it is the realization of NVDA issue 3208 (an issue I myself wrote) that advocated adding add-on update feature to NVDA, and I’m actively working on a pull request to make that into reality. Regarding Windows 10 App Essentials, one or more important features from that add-on has just been transferred to NVDA, and will show up as part of upcoming 2019.1 release (specifically, in NVDA 2019.1, you won’t need Windows 10 App Essentials to benefit from improved usability of various time pickers in Windows 10; speaking of features, emoji panel support was originally part of my add-on until it was transferred to NVDA in 2018.3). My sincere apologies for my tone. Cheers, Joseph

Yes, you are correct; Admin rights are required to install programs on a network PC. Perhaps the PCs at Noah's school are stand-alone; actually saw a computer class running at CNIB in Toronto that way. You could offload the work of speaking by using a hardware synthesizer such as a Doubletalk or Triple talk. Your laptop needs SSD not a mechanical hard disk with 8, 16 or 32 GB RAM. 32 GB is best if you plan to do video and/or audio editing & recording. The PC at your school may have as little as one GB RAM and a slow CPU. Giving the laptop adequate RAM ids, more important that high-performance CPU. Look for a laptop with a fast, but not necessarily Intel I8 speed. An Intel I5 or six CPU should work fine. You consume CPU cycles a lot if you do sound or video editing, recalculate mammoth spreadsheets and run many programs concurrently. Web browsing is light work for a PC. Download the Belarc Advisor from HTTPS://www.belarc.com. Run it on the problem computers at school. Lists the CPU chip, installed RAM, software licenses, everything worth knowing about the PC.
