I havn't ever had this issue, then again, I have the latest official drivers, What I usually do with a new build is get all the stuff I need, and install it then connect to the net otherwise ms pulls generic stuff down and it gets really confused.

Dear Sarah & List:
You are correct, video editing can require much RAM and CPU power, so can Audio Editing; however, it depends on your editing program.
Sound Forge is a RAM hog and a CPU power lover. Goldwave on the other hand, has a much lighter footprint on your PC, same for the Olympus Sonority multitrack audio editor.
MS Word can be a RAM glutton if you are editing and spell checking mammoth-size files. Alternatively, using the Generate command to produce your final document, deleting strikeouts, inserting red lined material, etc. Excel can be a RAM pig and CPU power hog, however do you really want to run the Decennial Census of the United States using Excel spreadsheets on your PC? Alternatively, recalculate truly massive spreadsheets, calculating the cost of running the General Electric Company or Boeing Aircraft for a calendar Quarter? You
Is Outlook is a relatively light user of ram & CPU power, when reading mail, you just display messages on the messages, which takes little resources, when reading mail, it displays messages on the screen advancing page by page relatively slowly. When composing spell checking, it uses more CPU power
If you deal with typical spreadsheets for a small organization, such as the PTA or your Church or Temple, you will not overload your PC.
As the PC swaps memory, too disk and accesses other files with spell check dictionaries and such.
Sound editing smaller files is much easier than for larger files Yes, if you demand top performance, ask for an Intel I8 CPU with all the DDR4 RAM the PC will hold, with a discrete Video card to relieve the PC of the work of painting the display. This is especially important if you do animation.
However, for the average user you can live with 16 GB of DDR4 RAM and an Intel I6 or 7 chip. CAD/CAM can use much CPU and RAM. Brian K. Lingard

The student say "heavy intense application" so in my mind that is video editing, excel, word, outlook, power point, audio editing software, video rendering and editing software. Run all of that at once, and even an 8-gig machine will choke. My capture card required eight gigs so I plug that in, watch my fans spin up and watch it use eight gigs of ram leaving me with 24 to play with. Forza uses I think about 4-8, I do not know how much nvda uses but by the time I am done I will have used most if not all of my ram in a day.

It would seem to me that the questions are which if either is more accessible in terms of programs, and the differences between the two methods and what they mean. An image is an exact sector for sector copy of the hard drive. I believe it copies everything, including the boot record and it may preserve authorizations for software that a backup may not. Also, with a backup, if you loose this or that file, you can restore individual files or folders. With an image, you may not be able to. I've heard some of these things discussed over the years but I'm stating these things to help spur discussion. Some of what I say may be wrong ore partly wrong.
Perhaps the best thing to do is to back things up like documents and music, and to also have a disk image for restoring the system including the boot record and authorizations that require it.

That sounds like a lot of work. Is there anything important you want to do with the newest NVDA version or anything important you believe will be possible you will want to do in versions that will be upcoming in the next year or two?
In addition, what if you try a different synthesizer. Which one are you using now? It might make more sense to go back to the version of NVDA you were using until there is a reason or reasons to go through all that work in terms of a meaningful benefit or benefits.
And, in the short term, if enough people report this problem, it will be addressed by the developers. it may be that there is something about your laptop and some others that will never be known, that causes you to have this problem and it may be corrected by the developers. Thanks for the pointers and the offer of further information. Over the years, I’ve dabbled with adventure and strategy games but what intrigues me is the idea of video gaming – okay, maybe I should say here that my interpretation of video gaming is the narrow one of “shoot ‘em up” style of game which I’m having trouble picturing with speech only! Also, I’m assuming that this is the type of games referred to earlier as it’s generally the video aspect of games which is memory and processor intensive.
I’ll definitely go and look for that accessible gaming site, though, to see what’s available.

Have you gone back to a version where this didn't happen to see if it still doesn't? At this point, we can't tell if this is an NVDA issue or something else. You can use an older version as a portable program and keep your current installation for the test. When the problem occurs, what happens if you unload and then run NVDA again? Did you try that before rebooting?
Also, when this happens, before trying to correct the situation, see if you can go in and out of browse mode in the message. There may be some problem with the way browse mode works when this happens.
