Hi!
Here's my answer to your question, Semirhage , and I hope others will agree with me.
Even though some things in NVDA updates may help Windows 10 users, NVDA is still compatible with all Windows versions from XP onwards, so plenty of improvements to NVDA arriving in each update will work on Windows 7 as well. I use Windows 7 here, and updating NVDA has never caused any extra problems for me, so any Windows 7 user can still safely install NVDA updates, given that many of the changes benefit all of us, not just Windows 10 users.
Bye for now!

Re: Facebook with NVDA

Babcock LDPVI

Hello:

The Facebook page has keyboard shortcuts built in so that screen reader users can access it. All you need to do is press the NVDA key and the spacebar to make sure that NVDA is in the correct mode- I think that you need focus mode. As you press the NVDA key and the spacebar, it will play a sound as it toggles between browse mode and focus mode. The sound effect that you want to listen out for is of a key on a keyboard being pressed.

Once you are in the focus mode, you can access these built in keyboard shortcuts. These shortcuts vary slightly depending on which operating system that you are using (Windows or Mac) and which browser you are using- Chrome, Firefox or Safari.

I tend to use Firefox on my Windows 10 PC and so I need to press the Shift and the Alt keys together but if you are using Chrome, you just use the Alt key.

Each of the main sections on Facebook can be accessed by pressing a number. For instance pressing 1 will take you to your newsfeed and pressing 4 will take you to your inbox.

These numbers need to be pressed with either the shift and alt key or just the alt key depending on your operating system and your browser.

Below I have listed the shortcuts needed to access the main sections within Facebook.

Shift + Alt + 0 takes you to the Help page.

Shift + Alt +1 takes you to your Home page.

Shift + Alt + 2 takes you to your Timeline page.

Shift + Alt + 3 takes you to your Friends page.

Shift + Alt + 4 takes you to your Inbox

Shift + Alt + 5 takes you to your Notifications

Shift + Alt + 6 takes you to your Settings

Shift + Alt + 7 takes you to your Activity Log

Shift + Alt + 8 takes you to the About page

Shift + Alt + 9 takes you to the Terms page.

Additionally, your newsfeed or timeline can also be accessed with different shortcut keys. These just require single letters to be pressed and are the same regardless of which operating system and browser you use. I have listed them below.

Pressing the forward slash (/) will enable you to search.

Pressing the q key will enable you to search your chat contacts.

Pressing the o key will enable you to open any attachments that are in the story.

Pressing the s key will enable you to share the story.

Pressing the l key will enable you to like a story. Pressing l again allows you to “unlike” it.

Pressing the c key will enable you to comment on a story.

Pressing the enter key on a selected story will expand it.

Pressing the k key takes you forward through each story one by one.

Pressing the j key takes you backwards through each story one by one.

Pressing the p key will enable you to create a new post or story.

I hope these instructions are helpful.

These instructions are also contained within some videos that I have created. You can access the videos (each has a full text transcript.)

Re: Creating a Message Filter in Thunderbird

Rich,

Are you using the IMAP protocol to access your email messages or POP?

You generally only create message filters within an e-mail client, whether it's Thunderbird or other, when you are using POP.

If you are using IMAP filters are created on the server side and all the assignment of messages to folders occurs on the server side.

Hi Rich,

OK, assuming you are doing everything up to this point correctly:

When you get to the item that says: 'choose folder' treat it like a combo box. Use the keystroke alt + down arrow to open it and then use tree view type keystrokes (right arrow to open a collapsed item left arrow to close) to navigate. then use up and down arrows to continue navigation. If you see a folder that says collapsed then use right arrow to open it';s structure and down arrow to a sub folder. Once you have found and highlighted the desired folder, press enter or space bar to be sure it is selected. Then tab to the rest of the dialogue and make selections.

I use the mobile site all of the time, and it is very easy to do the basics, send message, post, comment on others' posts, and much more. It is so simple, because there is no adds or apps or anything like that on there. It just has what you want, and you can navigate just like on any other web sites. Yes, much better to use the mobile site!

Hi

I started uploading some of it last night, the page is under construction but the page is up there ready to go.

More will be add in the next night or so it is written up, it just needs some editing and page formatting for the web page. From what I have read from what you want to do it should cover most of it but have not worked out how to do the private chat one yet as I have had no need for it so did not find out how to do it and that is as if you can with a screen reader.

The tutorial is done from a blind user prospective and not a sighted persons prospective.

Hope it will help other users as well a friend of mine just signed up and wanted to know as well so i was putting to gather  some information for him to use face book as well.

I usually only read some of the articles reply to messages etc now and again or post when there is a release of NVDA or a new tutorial or some thing to go up on the website.

Sending private messages that aren't on the wall. Is there a way to do that without going into chat? Don't know how to do it either way so yeah. LOL. 5. Looking at the messages I am notified that I have. Like on my wall or personal it says I have them but when I click it won't navigate through them well if I arrow or even tab so obviously I should be doing something else.

Hi

If for some reason I have to use a laptop, i use the caps lock key as a
modifier key for NVDA With some of the keyboards on a lap top on some of
them they are so close together and keys like the insert key etc are
hard to find and have to be marked. Even though it may be a full size
keyboard, i am lazy and plug in a wireless full size keyboard where the
keys are spaced nicely and easy to find like normal.

Then set the lap top to desk top keyboard layout.

You can set the modifier keys under the keyboard settings section in
NVDA. You can use the CTRL + the NVDA key + the letter K to go to this
section quickly. Actually I have all 3 picked it does not hurt. But
usually only use the one or 2 of them

By the way if you want to type in capital letters if you use the caps
lock key you must hit it 2 times until you hear it say capslock on and
you must hit it 2 times to turn it off.
Hope this helps.
