Re: BARD Express

This isn't limited to NVDA. Whatever voice it
uses, it does so because of some sort of code in web pages or other
documents.
Others may be able to give more
information.

I don't know what might determine it in a Word
document. In HTML, there is a language tag that many sites use to specify
the language of the site or page.
I explained in an earlier message how to stop the
synthesizer automatically changing language. You will notice a dialect
checkbox in the same voices dialog I discussed before. If you don't want
the dialect to change, for example, Brittish English on a site that specifies
the dialect, uncheck this box as well, if it is checked.

Re: audio recorder with screen reader accessibility:
Chris Mullins
Hi I have managed to use it but it’s not very good accessibility wise. You can start a recording but the start button only responds to the spacebar and mouse button. It’s the same for all buttons. You have to move focus away from the app to get any audio feedback via NVDA and find the other buttons on the GUI. I emailed the author with some accessibility suggestions and he responded rather off-handedly saying he hadn’t got time to change anything.

Turn use automatic language switching off.
it's in the settings for your synthesizer. I don't know if this part of
the interface has changed in new versions but you can try this. Use NVDA
key control v to open the synthesizer dialog and tab around until you find the
checkbox. Uncheck it with the space bar. Then Press
enter.

Re: NVDA not giving accurate feedback
Gene
It isn't a question of what you use. It is
how you have NVDA set when you aren't using screen review. Have screen
review off unless you are using it. If it is on, it interferes with the
proper operation of NVDA when you are working with applications from the
keyboard, not reviewing the screen.

Re: NVDA not giving accurate feedback

You may not hear the actual item where you are
being read. You may hear another item, maybe the one before or after your
position being read. I don't remember which one you hear. That may
happen in lists of files and folders as well, probably in any list view.
It may happen that when you read the headings of an e-mail, that you won't be on
the correct message in the list, its another list and another example, and the
headers themselves may not read properly.
Go back to object navigation when you have finished
using screen navigation and make it a habit. A JAWS user always returns to
the PC cursor and this is a similar principle.

Re: audio recorder with screen reader accessibility:
Gene
The problem doesn't arise if you have XP. Use
What You Hear, or Stereo Mix, the same feature but with a different name, or
whatever it is called, it has a number of names.
Make sure the sources you want to record are
unmuted in the play settings of your sound card. Then record.
Every sound card I've worked with in XP supports
What You Hear. It was universal or nearly so until after XP.
As for finding a recorder, you can use any recorder
you want. There is no separate feature in XP requiring certain
recorders. XP doesn't support loopback, which these recorders are using,
but it isn't necessary, as I explained above. The reason loopback was
instituted in recording programs is because so many sound cards don't support
what you hear after XP.

Re: FIrefox

As I recall, when such messages from Firefox come
up asking if you want to do something, usually choices are read and the commands
for those choices are spoken, as in a dialog. I don't know the command,
others may, but when the message comes up, do you let it read in its entirety
and lisetn for the commands? They go by fast if you have your speech set
to fast. Many people often interrupt speech when going through dialogs and
don't hear such commands much of the time. I'm just being sure you aren't
missing them.

From your description, appears your PC a year ago had an extremely overworked CPU or a large shortage of RAM.
SSD might help with the situation you describe; however, I suspect another 4 or 8 GB of RAM will work wonders. You may wish to change to the 64-bit version of MS Office if you have a 64-bit PC.
You may wish to run the Belarc Advisor on your PC, to ascertain its CPU, memory, disk etc. This program is free for personal use, provides a true treasure-trove of information about your PC.
