Re: start and End Markers for Selecting Text
Gene
Why don't you use the Windows method where an
application cursor is available? While there is no reason not to use the
NVDA method, it is intended for times when there is no application cursor and
text can't be selected in that way. I don't know why you are having a
problem in this particular case but if the Windows method works, it doesn't
matter.

Text Most of the time when I use NVDA+F9 to set a start marker, and NVDA+F10 twice to copy the text to the clipboard I don't have any problems. I'm trying to select a block of text (a chapter of a book) in a plain text file which is open in Notepad. I get the error message, "No start marker set," even though NVDA told me the start marker had been set when I pressed NVDA+F9. When I coppied the whole book from Notepad into Word and tried selecting the chapter in the same manner, no problem whatsoever. Does anybody know why a Notepad file would lose the start marker while it does not in Word? As a related question, is it possible to turn off NVDA announcing how many characters have been selected when more than 500 have using SHIFT+down arrow, becuase it's not then possible to listen to the start of the paragraph to tell whether the next chapter has been reached ... all I hear then is the number of characters that have been selected. Thanks, Giles

spell check ... how do I see the misspelled word?

In Office 2016, NVDA reads the options for correcting a misspelling clearly in spell check, but not the word that is misspelled. How do I read the word I am supposed to be correcting????

Re: Accessibility of Spotify for desktop for the blind users
I'll never understand why people don't give details when sending emails. What will you do with the data after this is presented? Take it to Spotify? Who else has access to the data we present and what will the team do with it? Narrow down what parts are not accessible? I'm not filling this out until more detail is given.

Quentin Christensen
For those interested, if you weren't following the associated GitHub issue, that issue has now been closed as "merged" with the "2019.1" milestone - which means it is in the latest alpha release which you can find here: https://www.nvaccess.org/files/nvda/snapshots/ and all things going well, it should be in 2019.1 when it comes out. Please do advise of any issues with it. Kind regards Quentin.

Re: NVDA and Excel
Quentin Christensen
Hi Ralf, Re your points: 1) There's always going to be differences of opinion around what information should get read first in any situation. Our rationale for reading the contents before the cell header or coordinates is that if you press right arrow or tab, you can predict that the focus will move from A1 to B1 to C1 etc, and if you are familiar with the spreadsheet, you may know the order of the columns. What you won't necessarily know, and the most important piece of information about that cell, is the contents. Some of the work which has been done recently has streamlined some internal processes, so it may be possible to add the ability to re-order speech in future. 2) What kind of dropdown lists are you using? I just created one using "Data validation", and it identifies (as a submenu), and when navigating through the items (press alt+down arrow to open), it reads each for me. I'm using NVDA 2018.4.1 and Excel / Office 365 Version: 16.0.11126.20200 3) This is a known issue: https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/6065 I'll chase up where it's at. Kind regards Quentin.

If you need to use Mozilla Apps Enhancements add-on, Do not install Control Usage Assistant. NVDA+H conflicts and doesn't allow column re-organization in Thunderbird. After discovering this conflict on a Thunderbird user's machine I was supporting yesterday, I felt it important enough to bring up here. Stuff like this and the Golden Cursor/Clip Contents Designer conflict causes me to be very careful which add-ons I recommend and wish there was a better coordination model for how add-ons are developed and what methods authors use to decide which key strokes are safe to use. This is not a criticism of any particular authors. I personally appreciate all of you giving of your time to make NVDA as flexible as it is. Maybe we need to come up with a compatibility list of trusted add-ons and what they can do to one another. If you plan to use this add-on, don't install that one, etc.

Hello, I don’t have those symptoms with Office 365 and I’m a full time excel worker. From my point of view there are 3 other criterias that gives Excel and NVDA a poor experience.
