Re: Addon updater
Hi,
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
If I understand you right, you'd like me to produce a version of Add-on Updater compatible with older stable releases with a constraint that it won't check for updated version of itself unless NVDA itself is updated. In theory this is possible, but in practice, it defeats the purpose of Add-on Updater. First, I don't have any Windows XP machine at all to test this idea. Second, you need a base version for Add-on Updater, which must be updated from time to time so users will be notified that a newer NVDA version must be used (which means Add-on Updater needs to update itself, too, which is direct contradiction to what you are asking, I think). Given NV Access's policy on Windows XP, coupled with impending switch to Python 3 and other changes here and there (and also because Add-on Updater relies on newer techniques), I'd like to kindly turn down this request. Also, within 30 days after release of NVDA 2019.1, I'll drop support for 2018.4 to make the add-on code simpler and to align with the direction NVDA is going with new add-on compatibility approach. Cheers, Joseph

NVDA Phantom Windows At Start Up
Ron Canazzi
Hi Group,
One of the things that really used to bother me when I used JAWS from the nineties through 2011 was that at start up, there were phantom windows being displayed at start up from almost everything that ran in the system tray. Such programs as Avast anti virus, Drop Box, action center or in the old days network neighborhood and even JAWS itself were involved. As thing were loading, you would be presented with windows identified as being part of the aforementioned programs but when you tried navigating to them, the windows were blank and contained nothing. When I first started using NVDA, this never happened. Sometime in the 2018 cycle (I can't quite remember when) this began happening more and more with NVDA. Now when I boot the system, Drop Box, Action Center, one drive, volume panel (from Realtech sound manager) and one or two others show up with a blank window. Moving the cursor or mouse or moving to the desktop and back clears up the issue but this is somewhat annoying--just as it used to be with JAWS. I am wondering if this is causing some of the confusion with some people reporting blank windows for such programs as Drop Box that are being reported on this list. It would be nice if this issue could be addressed in future releases. -- They Ask Me If I'm Happy; I say Yes. They ask: "How Happy are You?" I Say: "I'm as happy as a stow away chimpanzee on a banana boat!"

Re: Finding the comment's section on a YouTube video

Hi Have you tried the following for viewing youtube? It’s an interface to YouTube designed for visually impaired and it doesn’t have the ads. You get a search box for your keywords, a combo boxc where you select the number of results per page, another combo box where you select the media you are searching for e.g videos, and a search button. Use the h key to scroll through the results, press tab to move focus to the one you want to play and press enter. Another window opens for the specific video, switch to browse mode then use the h key to navigate to “Video Information” where you will find details of the video or use the b key to move to the control buttons.

Yes can be a good idea. We could not do that as the software had hard coded drivers for specific printers in a database but generally if those considerations are not the issue an old Inspiron can work very well.

Right if its a dell, and has a removable cd or floppy drive. Take it out then try a reboot. Some of these machines will not boot if a fault in a drive is detected, even if its not actually being used for booting.

Yes and if like me you downloaded the add ons and installed them then the ability to use add on updateer is no longer available. Re: Dropbox nag screens now appearing
Brian's Mail list account <bglists@...>
Really they should be adopting good practice though. However at the moment the other issue I have is as I've said here before, on my windows 7 box the dialogues and log in screen are just blank as far as nvda are concerned. I suspect that a file or registry corruption has occurred but there are no real clues and so I cannot really report that issue as others here say they work for them. here we get a blank pane and an exception in the log of nvda. Cfc says no issues either but it uses QT extensively and so I suspect that a dll is either out of date or not registered and I'm not inclined to reinstall windows to fix one problem with one piece of software when at some point it will need to be upgraded to windows 10 in any case.
