Sadly some stuff can say attatchments but not actually have anything.

Some stuff have automatic attachments like some outlook things, maybe some pictures, those usually are scrubbed with the message but not allways.

NVDA key + letter N, arrow down to help, and, there are two items that
might be suitable - commands quick reference, and, user guide - in both
of those pages that will come up, you can jumpt down to relevant
headings, or just browse the content, etc. etc..

hi,

Is there special settings to make calibre more accessible? I cannot configure all the settings for pdf conversion. Also comboboxes aren't accessible. There must be a problem as calibre split a 541 page epub into 1390 pages.

Hi Jeff,

If you press NVDA+numpad delete, or if using laptop layout, NVDA+delete, NVDA will report the distance from the left and top edges of the page in whatever measurement unit you have Word set to report in (note this also includes the page margin).

Reading the status bar (NVDA+end for desktop layout or NVDA+shift+end for laptop layout) should tell you the section and page.  You can also set the status bar to tell you the line and column information.  To do that, press F6 to move the focus to the status bar, then press the applications key to open the context menu.  Arrow through the options and press space to check or uncheck any items you want (line and column are both in there).

You aren't using the correct object navigation and screen review commands.  You use insert numpad and certain keys on the numpad to move from object to object and you use certain numpad keys by themselves to read information in the object where you are located.

Braille is made up of 6 cells; 3 on one side of the 6 dots and 3 on the other side of the 6 dots.


So you have:-


.1    .4

.2    .5

.3    .6


All you need to do to learn the first 10 letters of the alphabet and then add .3 for the next 10 letters and .6 for the last 6 letters (W comes at the end)


Dot 1 is A

Dots 1 and 2 is B

Dots 1 and 4 is C

Dots 1, 3 & 4 is D

Dots 1 & 5 is E

Dots 1, 2 & 3 is F

Dots 1, 2, 4 & 5 is G

Dots 1, 2 & 5 is H

Dots 2 & 4 is I

Dots 2, 4 & 5 is J



N.B: If you put a number sign in front of the first 10 letters - a BLE sign - Dots 3, 4, 5 & 6 - A (Dot 1) becomes number 1. So B becomes 2, and J is zero..


If you add a Dot 3 to Dot 1 it becomes K (originally A)

Therefore Dots 1 & 2 (B) and add Dot 3 - becomes L

So you do this until you get to J and add Dot 3 - becomes T


To get the next 6 letters all you need to do is add a Dot 6.


So Dot 1 (A)

Add Dot 3 - becomes K

Add Dot 6 - becomes U


So B - becomes V and so on.


So when you get to J:

Add Dot 3 - becomes T

Add Dot 6 to Dots 2, 4 and 5 - becomes W.


If you press dots 1, 2, 3, 4 & 6 together - AND sign

If you press all 6 dots together - FOR sign

If you press dots 1, 3, 4, 5 & 6 together - YOU sign

If you press dots 1, 2, 3, 5 & 6 - Of sign

If you press dots 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6 together - WITH sign.


Once you have learned the alphabet, there are combinations of dots which are contractions; i.e. dot 6 with N - Nation....


I learned to type and read to grade 2 in about 6 months, generally about 3 days a week. I had a set of tapes whereby I had to type a number of words on a single line which included a certain contraction such as dis, etc. I used a Perkins to type on braille paper. A friend checked my work once a week and I learned a new contraction for the following week.

Say in the case of a desk top computer which i use you use your modifier key  and the numeric keypad.

Make sure your num lock key is off.


you will need to put your self into that mode first press the nvda key +7 on the numeric keypad to do this make sure you hear it spoken.


NVDA key + 8 takes you up a level nvda key + 2 takes you down a level. NVDA key + 4 will take you to the left and nvda key + 6 will take you to the right and they will also say if you can not go any further to the left or right.



You will also see more if the check box under the review cursor settings called Simple review mode is unchecked.


Probably for a quick example open up note pad then type in some text then use the alt key + f4 key you will then be given some options like save cancel etc and you will only hear the message once. Even though you can tab between those buttons it will not read out the message again. So if you are in object navigation mode use the nvda key + 8 on the numeric key pad to go up one level to read the message.


You apart from that would not not really use it to get to the buttons you can already tab to.



There are other places you would use it on it would depend if you can get to it or not.

I don't know what the hang up is. 
Having one of the other type of physical machine doesn't prohibit you from using either layout. Indeed, since I can remember be it with Jaws or now that I'm trying to use NVDA more, every machine I've had, be it a laptop or desktop, one of the first things I've always done when doing the initial configuration is to enable the laptop keyboard layout. This doesn’t' mean that you can't use the desktop layout anymore. Simply that you will also have access to the laptop keystrokes in addition to the traditional desktop ones.

I think though that the basic answer is that the caps lock can be used for the insert key by allowing it to do so in the settings, but that the keys needed for the navigation are different in the layouts.

It isn't Practical to help unless we know if the person is using the desktop

or laptop layout.  One system should be taught at a time.


There is a tutorial by Joseph Lee that teaches object navigation.  I may send my own in the not distant future.

In the %temp% folder you should have the last two logs - nvda.log and nvda-old.log.  You can get to the %temp% folder in Windows 10 by opening File Explorer with WINDOWS+E, then press ALT+D to move to the address bar and type %temp% (percent sign, the word t e m p then the percent sign again, no spaces) and press enter.

If I recall, speech viewer is a way to show on the screen what the synth is speaking and, no, I don't use it. But I'll certainly check to make sure it hasn't been inadvertently turned on. I do know I've installed several updates with no change in this behavior. I used to run Vocalizer on this machine with no issues. I can't recall whether it started before or after I started using eloquence. Lou

In the %temp% folder you should have the last two logs - nvda.log and nvda-old.log.  You can get to the %temp% folder in Windows 10 by opening File Explorer with WINDOWS+E, then press ALT+D to move to the address bar and type %temp% (percent sign, the word t e m p then the percent sign again, no spaces) and press enter.

If I recall, speech viewer is a way to show on the screen what the synth is speaking and, no, I don't use it. But I'll certainly check to make sure it hasn't been inadvertently turned on. I do know I've installed several updates with no change in this behavior. I used to run Vocalizer on this machine with no issues. I've been using SHIFT+TAB from within the message body to throw focus to the Attachments for "forever."  You can then right/left arrow through the attachments present.  If you hit either end of the list you'll sit there if you try to move any further in the same direction.

Hi, I received an email from someone and in the subject line it said attachments but I couldn’t click on it as with my old machine and there was no text to tell me what the attachment(s) was/were. Do I ignore this as it hasn’t been set out correctly or what do I do here and in later emails to open attachments if I know them to be genuine otherwise obviously I would delete without opening?

After redoing the change, NVDA+CTRL+C should do the trick for you.
I'd think it won't affect any future update of the program since it's just a custom setting, nothing systematical so to speak.
