Hi

If you know you are in a search box but not sure you can arrow up or down to confirm you are in a search box. you will usually hear something like search button just after the editable box.

if you are not sure which mode if any you can use the nvda key + the space bar to change from say browse mode to focus mode or back the other way.

On the machine I have hear I like hearing which mode it is in like in browse mode where I can use the single letter navigation keys or in focus mode where I can type in stuff like in the search box.

The other choice is to hear sounds you can try out the 2 different modes by going to the browse settings section in NVDA.

To quickly get to the browse mode section in NVDA use the nvda key + CTRL key + the letter B then tab until you hear NVDA say Audio indication of focus and browse modes

If the box is checked you will hear the sounds and if unchecked you will hear it spoken.

In some cases after you do a search to quickly get to the search results, most will be under a heading called search results. You can use the letter H in browse mode to do this, but usually done better from the top of the page.
I mean as in jump down by heading with NVDA.

hopefully this helps.

Danni,

If by "shut off the chatter" you mean to stop NVDA from speaking
while you type, etc., you can use NVDA Key+S to toggle speech mode. I also
use the No Beeps Speech Mode NVDA add-on so that I either have speech or
silence, as there is a third feedback using beeps which I have no use for.
The NVDA Key+S is a true on/off toggle for speech if you use that add-on,
otherwise it is a cycling switch between, off, beep mode, and speech mode.

You believe that it's the site's problem but that is a very questionable belief.  It's possible, but highly questionable and the problem needs to be examined further, Especially since two people have now reported successfully using the site.

When you go to

Gene
there is no basis to assume it’s the site's problem.

Hi,

I tried firefox, the webbie browser and inteernet explorer and none of the
browsers worked for me. None of the screen readers, NVDA and system access
to go worked for me. I think they need to do something about their site.

Hi Rosemarie,

I am using the latest Firefox, windows 10 and NVDA 2016.2.

I have no problem  seeing each field. In fact I answered each question with
the adjusted combo box and entered a sample answer and explanations that I
was only testing. Finally I entered the submit button and my submission was
confirmed with the usual invitation to create my own Survey Monkey
questionnaire.

The interface was very clear and combo boxes and check lists were exactly
matched up and working perfectly.

I wonder why you were having difficulty?

All the best,

Rosemarie,

Normally, I would support you completely on your findings. Especially when a
survey is inaccessible. Could you explain what operating system, generation
of NVDA, and version of Firefox you are using?

After that I can compare my settings with yours and see why I have no
problem accessing the survey when you are having so much trouble.

For the record, here is a screen capture of what NVDA sees in the survey
after I filled it in with trial data:

Hi, Ron,

Yes, this is a survey for students. I already informed the help desk about
their site so I hope they do something about it.

Hi Rosemary,

I have no problem navigating this page and at the very end, there is a
submit button. I don't want to fill out the survey because I haven't taken
any such course. Actually, I thought of filling it in with all negative
answers for laughs and giggles and then submitting, but that would screw up
someone's reputation there. This is obviously a specific survey requested
for students and the URL is probably proprietary.

Hi, Arleen,

I'm using windows 10 and the latest version of NVDA. I tried firefox and the
webbie browser as well as internet explorer and neither browser worked. I
also tried system Access to go but that didn't work either.

Oh, not good! What windows is she using? Is it something to do with Windows
ten? Is it something neither of your screen readers see?

Hi, everyone,

I just finished taking a course in independent living housekeeping. I was
able to answer the questions in the survey but when it came to trying to
submit it, I couldn't. I tried it with both NVDA and system access to go but
neither screen reader saw the submit button. I even tried it with object
navigation but that didn't work either. Have any of you had trouble with
submitting surveys to Hadley using NVDA? I had to send the email about the
survey to my sister to help me fill it out.

Rosemarie

P.S. I tried with webbie browser and firefox but the same thing happened.

Are you using a script blocker? I saw no buttons when I didn't allow
scripts to run. When I did, I saw the submit button.
