Yes. Run the snapshot as a portable, best from an external source, such as a USB drive. That way it won't mess with the settings of the installed copy.

Hi I was wondering if you can have 2 versions of nvda installed? The reason why I am asking, is because I want to test out new nvda features, and I don’t want to uninstall the current version of nvda that I have installed which is nvda 2016.2.1.

Hi Kenny,

If you want to test the master snapshots version for nvda, I would suggest to used a USB flash drive in order to not to messed up your existing stable release of nvda to your machine. Not unless you have two computer solely for the testing of the said snapshot version.

I tend not to use add-ons so have no experience of the highlight feature but have never had problems using alt to shift focus to the toolbar and I suspect alt d, control e or f6 will shift focus to the omnibox without activating the toolbar.

Cheers

Chris,

As always in Windows, there are multiple ways to do the same thing.  One thing that is throwing me now is that sometimes the Focus Highlight Addon doesn't always do that, which throws me.

Also, with regard to the omnibox/address box, depending on how you get focus makes the behavior of TAB or Arrow work or not work.  If I use Alt+D to get to the omnibox I cannot use either TAB or right arrow to get to the extensions grouping in the toolbar.  I must use the straight ALT or F10 key to throw focus to the toolbar then I can TAB/SHIFT+TAB/Left Arrow/Right Arrow my way around to my heart's content.  Using ALT+D immediately puts one into edit mode in the omnibox, which is not what one wants in this situation.

I agree, though, for consistency's sake in my case, that I will prefer and teach TAB/SHIFT+TAB rather than the arrow keys.  This follows standard practice for navigating the ribbon in MS Office programs, and I try to avoid changing technique by program except when there seems no other way of doing something.

Kobaspeech's contact address is info@kobavision.be

You may well be able to get the best answer to your question from them. It
sounds very much like a Kobaspeech problem rather than an NVDA problem.

Re: Getting to web browser toolbar

Chris Mullins

Whilst the left arrow will move you to the extensions list after pressing f10, I do not think it is the best way to traverse the Chrome menu bar.  Equally, the traditional way screen readers have accessed a menu bar/ribbon by just pressing the alt key alone works the same as pressing f10, as it too will move focus to the chrome menu submenu icon without activating it.  I have found that Tab and shift+tab are the best keys to use to traverse the objects on the menu bar as the arrow keys will operate within the Omnibox edit field when it gets focus.

Cheers

Thank you very much to all who took the time to respond.  I am particularly grateful for the tip that F10 will throw focus to the Chrome Menu button without opening the menu, which is not true if you use ALT+F to throw focus and open the Chrome Menu button at the same time.  Once you have focus on the Chrome menu button, which is always positioned as the rightmost/last button you know that any extensions buttons will absolutely be to the left of it, can use the left arrow key to move through them, and you know you've hit the end when you get to the address box/omnibox.

Below is what I just wrote up:

To Find a Toolbar Button In the Chrome Browser

1.       Hit F10 to throw focus to the Chrome Menu Button, which is always the rightmost (last) button on the main chrome toolbar.

2.       Use the left arrow to move in to the “Extensions Grouping,” which is what contains all the buttons you’ve chosen to make visible for extensions or that are made visible by default when an extension is installed.

3.      Continue to hit left arrow (or right arrow if you overshoot) until you land on the button you’re looking for.

4.      Hit Enter to activate the button, after which your screen reader should start identifying the items that are in the submenu that these buttons typically open.  The actual content of a given extension’s submenu can vary quite widely and include links, buttons, and more.  You activate buttons as you typically do.  In most instances you hit “Escape” to close the submenu.  If the button actually causes a separate window to open, which is what happens when if you have the Google Hangouts button and press it, CTRL+W will close that window.  Remember that if you’re using Hangouts each conversation you initiate causes its own window to open, and you should close it when you’re done with the conversation.  The Hangouts window is its own thing and essentially serves as a lookup window or where you enter a phone number if you wish to call or send a text as your conversation.

I'm running the rolled back version of just windows mail on my windows 10, 64 bit machine, with no hassles thus far - the form of disclaimer says that a windows update later on might cause issues, but, works well for me at moment.

You can find the necessary files, and detailed instructions on how to implement this roll-back, if you want it on following page:

So we are not expecting the Devs to produce a fix for this imminently?

What is a little irksome is that it works perfectly well on Windows 7 and after installing the flagship Windows 10 it causes problems. I was hoping that my explanation might trigger a fix or that someone has found a good workaround which did not involve ALT plus TAB or extra tabbing on pretty much every email.

Does anyone know if it helps to install any NVDA add-ons for Windows 10, for example?

Yes this is in fact an issue on Outlook Express but its not a new thing at all, it goes back to several versions previous. The difference in OE is that it remains pane no matter what, and only restarting the email software can fix it. Its as if some hooking into the software can cause a delay in the software which then makes the email program thinks its done things that it has not done.

Bloomberg Terminal with NVDA

Charles Coyle <charlieacoyle@...>

Hi all,

I was wondering whether any of you have experience of using the Bloomberg Terminal with NVDA (or, indeed, any other screen reader).

If so, I’d very much appreciate it if you could let me know how accessible or otherwise you found it and if there are ways of making it useable.

All the best,

Charlie
