Re: Reviewing the screen, help

Hi Travis Siegel

Could you give step by step how you use cmd to get the results you said.

I use win 7 and have a bit of sight and can see a red focus square around the cmd console window, but when i tried out what you said 7,8,9 it just placed it in the entry area.

If i move the mouse in a normal way i can hear the lines of a for example dir command as i point at them.

When using the command prompt, you should get speech just fine.  I use the command line a lot in windows (both 8.1 on my desktop, and 10 when I'm using my laptop), and in both cases, the command prompt talks just fine for me.

If you want to review data already printed on the screen, numpad 7 8 and 9 will read previous line, next line, and current line, and typing the command with a vertical bar followed by more will page your output one screen at a time if you want to read it page by page.  I did turn off key echo, (NVDA-2 because of the spelling issue, but otherwise, the command prompt works just fine for me, and it should for you as well.

All the suggestions posted in this thread are useful pieces of information to get things where you can do stuff with them, but if you're just talking about reading the command prompt screen with NVDA, you shouldn't have to do anything at all, it should just work, if this isn't the case, then there's something wrong somewhere, and that's really what should be focused on, instead of other ways to get the info.

You also could run notepad to read your output from inside cmd, Brian is the one to ask about this.

I'm not sure what you are saying.  Try being at the Command Prompt and typing something like dir and pressing enter.  the point is to get information on the screen, it doesn't matter just what you do to get text displayed.
Now, try moving with numpad 7 and numpad 9.  To hear the current line, use numpad 8.  All these commands are just numpad keys by themselves, not in combination with numpad insert or anything else.  Can you move around the screen?

I also couldn't figure out a way of reading the information presented on the screen.
As a workaround, if you want, you could try what follows:
1. Being on the prompt, press "ALT+Spacebar"
2. Up/down arrow until you find "edit" and press enter
3. Up/down arrow until you find "select all" and press enter.
You've just selected all the content which is on the screen at this point.
4. Press "ALT+Spacebar" again
5. Up/down arrow until "edit"
6. Up/down arrow until "copy".
You've just copied what you selected. Now all that content is on your clipboard.
7. Open Notepad and paste the content there so you can read.

I'm sure if the program weren't running, you wouldn't get such notifications.  But some people want the program to be constantly running and for those people this would be a problem.  And even if you have the program run at boot up, you can close it in the system tray.

Hi all,

I'm running Dropbox v68.3.92.  Approximately every half an hour or so,
NVDA's focus is being moved to a Dropbox window which only seems to
contain a single, blank edit field.  The window doesn't seem to stay on
the screen, but focus isn't returned to where it was previously after it
disappears.  In fact, NVDA reports it as taking up a rectangle of 0
pixels, so I don't know if anything shows up visually on the screen at all.

As you can imagine, having to dismiss these boxes several times per day
is irritating.  Does anybody have a work-around?

I didn't see it in the add on updater, and I was not even aware there was an update. I'll try that and see. I guess I go to the add ons page and look to see if ther was an update to the themes add on?

Re: Reviewing the screen, help

Notepad can definitely be invoked from within Command Prompt.   The following, if pasted in to a Command Prompt session, will create a file called ManPages.txt that includes the manual pages for dir, reg add, and reg delete commands, then open it in notepad.

dir /? > ManPages.txt
reg add /? >> ManPages.txt
reg delete /? >> ManPages.txt
notepad ManPages.txt

If you wanted the file nukes after having looked at it then just add the line:

del ManPages.txt

after the line that invokes notepad to open the file for review.   The above is pretty much what I've been proposing all along, and is the most commonly used method for gathering the output from a sequence of commands for later analysis.   If one wanted to capture STDERR (standard error) in addition to STDOUT (standard output) so that error output would be preserved, too, then that would be:

dir /? >  ManPages.txt  2>&1
reg add /? >> ManPages.txt  2>&1
reg delete /? >> ManPages.txt  2>&1
notepad ManPages.txt

And with this post, I'll ask that if anyone wishes to continue to discuss Windows Command Prompt scripting that we take that to Chat, as most of what we've been discussing has nothing at all to do with NVDA.  We've taken a deep dive elsewhere.  I'll keep an eye out to see if someone starts such a topic and join in, if needed.

Hi all

You also could run notepad to read your output from inside cmd, Brian is the one to ask about this.

I'm not sure what you are saying.  Try being at the Command Prompt and typing something like dir and pressing enter.  the point is to get information on the screen, it doesn't matter just what you do to get text displayed.
Now, try moving with numpad 7 and numpad 9.  To hear the current line, use numpad 8.  All these commands are just numpad keys by themselves, not in combination with numpad insert or anything else.  Can you move around the screen?

Since I started using this prompt it kept the very same way. When it was different? Surely I'd rather the old way then :)

Hi,
I also couldn't figure out a way of reading the information presented on the screen.

When I "run" the cmd command I get the system command prompt. Probably one of the review modes, but I just can't figure it out. Can anyone help, please?

Re: Nvda and the International phonetic Alphabet, (IPA)

Teri McElroy <shimzin.lists@...>

Hello Lev

I have just recently emailed the list to find out about this same topic. You can go to the nvda menu, then preferences, punctuation/symbol pronunciation. You'll need to input the symbols along with how you want the speech engine to pronounce them. However, I don't think putting in the unicode values is going to work. You'll need to input the actual symbol along with how you want NVDA to pronounce it. I've just tried entering a unicode value here and it didn't work for me. But when I enter the actual symbol, it does.

You can find information about punctuation/symbol pronunciation in section 11.2.2 of the online userguide. It will explain about inputting symbols.

Hope that helps.

Hello,

I have noticed that espeak reads some symbols of the international phonetic alphabet; however, this can not be done by other synthetic voices, so my question is this:

How to make that nvda reads correctly those symbols regardless of the synthetizer?

Or, how to make that other synthetizers read those symbols? For instance, vocalizer.

I got the Unicode transcription for all the symbols that I want.

The syntaxis is this:

U+00E6=Ash

Where the term “ash” is the proper name for that particular symbol.

So, is there a file inside the installation folder of nvda or user settings where I can paste that syntaxis to have nvda reading all those symbols?

Thanks for any info.
