Re: Invisible Dropbox pop-ups

Update to support what many have said:   None of the screen shots that have been sent to me, taken when this issue is occurring, show any visible DropBox pop-up/dialog activity whatsoever.   The DropBox background process is active, but there is absolutely nothing on the screen, and nothing in the taskbar other than the DropBox process in the system tray, related to DropBox.

Ditto, I asked a sighted person for help and they couldn't see anything!

I also noticed that you can be typing in word or an email client and if this pop-up appears, it grabs focus and you are typing into mid-air!

The following may have a useful suggestion but my understanding of just what is occurring may not be correct.  But whatever is done about this unreadable window problem, my suggestion about how such information is displayed may be useful.
Probably what is needed is the ability to turn such notifications completely off or alter it in some sort of accessibility setting so the information can be checked periodically by the blind person to see announcements about what has changed without them being read automatically.  I expect this can be done.  The information could be displayed in the system tray so a blind person can go to it and read it without a help balloon or a toast announcement being generated. Information can change constantly if desired in the system tray without a screen-reader reading it if it just changes.  This should be an accessibility setting that can be turned on in preferences.  Should it be on by default when a screen-reader is detected?  I'll leave that for others to discuss.
I think it is important for entities to develop a unified position on this feature and whether it should be on automatically when a screen-reader is detected.  In general, as things are, those who are complaining are just complaining about removing the wwindow. But that doesn't address the underlying problem, making the information available and not intruding on screen-reader use.

                    Hi all,

I'm running Dropbox v68.3.92.  Approximately every
                    half an hour or so,
NVDA's focus is being moved to a Dropbox window
                    which only seems to
contain a single, blank edit field.  The window
                    doesn't seem to stay on
the screen, but focus isn't returned to where it
                    was previously after it
disappears.  In fact, NVDA reports it as taking up
                    a rectangle of 0
pixels, so I don't know if anything shows up
visually on the screen at all.

As you can imagine, having to dismiss these boxes
                    several times per day
is irritating.  Does anybody have a work-around?

Will always make all updates, on the www.screenreader.ai website, otherwise I could make some sort of mailing list if people want. I could also include some message saying there's a newer version in the image descriptions :)

I recently released something similar to what you're talking about, it's called "Image describer" and is an NVDA add-on. The shortcut to get a description for an image is NVDA+Control+I. The add-on can be downloaded at http://www.screenreader.ai/

Re: Attention: Dropbox odd window reporters

Good Morning:  I had a sighted person look at my computer and they couldn't see anything when Drop Box spoke.  I'm a insider and have the problem right up to the latest insider's update of windows.  If I go in to Task Manager and kill everything related to Drop Box as well as Drop Box Updater and Drop Box Serices as soon as I sign in to computer no problems occur..  I noticed that the notiification button is out of focus with NVDA.

I can not do this since its now fixed. if you can upload them to a dropbox link and post the link to my private email I shall pass this on for you. Of course you may have had the guy talk to you directly already, so if you have had this and its resolved your problems, let the rest of us know on this list for future ref.
Thanks.

Re: listing open windows with NVDA

NVDA + F11 twice basicly shows the task bar with all programs on the task bar, the opened ones and the not opened ones which are just shortcuts pinned there for fast opening.

All,

How do you find floating windows with NVDA other than using the
object nav? In Jaws there is a hot key that shows all open app and
windows. I cannot find a similar command.

A floating window for those who might not know the terminology. Is a
window that is open by a program and is not attached to the program
and some of them are not even attached to the application ring (alt
tab). If the program does not place the focus correctly into the
window. Then you cannot access the window by the keyboard. Thus the
workaround which Jaws provides of listing all the windows helps here.

Hope someone can help.

Second question, just thought of. Are you able to remap keys in NVDA?

happened. I tried zip code and that did not work, either. What am I

This is nothing to do with NVDA.It is a synthasiser isssue. Go into the voice dictionary and change it.

Re: Why does NVDA say torado instead of tornado?

Dan Beaver

Actually, each synth has its own pronunciation table.  This table tells it how to pronounce strings.

the problem is that someone set those tables up so that it tries to figure out words from partial strings and grammatical rules. Of course, in English this is very difficult.   They didn't organize the tables so that they are truly alphabetical and so some of the strings are in the wrong order.

The result is that some words end up garbage.  It is fixed by either the developers fixing their tables or else folks like us adding an entry in the pronunciation dictionary for our systems that fix each one as we find them.  They generally use the dictionaries on our systems before resorting to the tables in the synth itself.  That is why we can fix them if we choose to.

my voiceover reads it correctly. maybe it's the particular voice you use.

It's about Vocalizer, rather than about tornado...

Voiceover uses Vocalizer express, the same voices we have in NVDA. I guess that's the problem.

Actually this program has this little annoyance with NVDA, and I suspect it does with any screen reader.

As a workaround, when you reach the point where NVDA reports about the download in question, just press F2.

Yes, that's the command to rename a file, but doing it you'll be able to see the current name of the download you're focused into and after you're done with it you can just press esc to exit it without changing the info on the field.

Hi,
in the lists of entries, like Download or inSeeding etc., apears a column for the names of each item in list.
NVDA reads from size column  to the following columns, but not the name of the selected entry.

Does anyone know    about uTorrent settings more friendly for NVDA?

I'm using NVDA 2018.4.1 and last beta 2019.1BETA1, uTorrent 3.5.4 portable.

Thanks,
