Brian V, could you please help troubleshoot this?

Jackie

Every time I send a reply to this list, 2 msgs are generated. I'd
troubleshoot this, but my husband was recently hospitalized w/a heart
attack & pneumonia, 2 hours after which we had a house fire, & I'm so
far behind on my website work that either everyone else has crossed
the finish line or I have a substantial lead, rather suspecting the
latter is not the case. The long & the short is, I just don't have the
time to investigate it right now, & I would appreciate some help, if
possible. Thanks in advance.

Re: Nvda and the International phonetic Alphabet, (IPA)

Correction on what I observed about the Punctuation/Symbol pronunciation dialog.   I'm not sure if I had a system burp or what, but when I got out of NVDA and back in again, and opened it, all the characters from symbols.dic and cldr.dic were present.  It's still odd to me that it puts the complex characters from symbols.dic first, then interrupts the list with the contents from cldr.dic, then comes back to the rest of the content of symbols.dic at the end.

I had to hit the END key to throw myself to the very end of a 2000 plus character list and find more of the contents from symbol.dic when in the character list part of that dialog.

Sarah, you say the addon's disabled, but the faulting app module is
still project fly. Please try relocating that folder out of your app
module folder to some other place & see if it goes away.

Re: Nvda and the International phonetic Alphabet, (IPA)

A couple of things here:

My comment regarding character by character reading, using character names, of the IPA versus phoneme by phoneme reading of characters in the IPA had to do with the ticket Enes Sarıbaş pointed out on github for NVDA.  It appears to me that ticket is requesting phoneme by phoneme reading, possibly at speeds that would make it impossible to know whether what was being read was originally written in its source language or the IPA.   I was contrasting this with what I interpret Teri's desire to be here, reading a word phonetically transcribed in the IPA character by character, using the name or description for that character, not the actual sound it makes.

As I posted earlier on a different topic that I spun off just to determine how and where speech dictionaries versus character and symbol stuff is kept:  The symbols & punctuation dictionary is a thing of its own and appears to be localized by language, with the main folder being C:\Program Files (x86)\NVDA\locale\ with all the language abbreviations as separate folders beneath.  The English version being, C:\Program Files (x86)\NVDA\locale\en\symbols.dic.   Here is the section just for the common symbols, as a point of reference with regard to the layout.  The individual fields are tab separated:

# Standard punctuation/symbols
! bang all
" quote most
\# number some
$ dollar all norep
£ pound all norep
euro all norep
¢ Cents all norep
.
.
.
~ tilda mo

The first column is the symbol itself, the second is what you want NVDA to say when it encounters it (its replacement), the third is something called level [which I don't quite understand based on the options, I'm guessing "character" is what will be wanted for the IPA characters, maybe "all"], and the last column is whether to pass the actual character itself to the synthesizer (and I'd presume that would be never for the IPA characters).  Given that every common and not so common symbol I can think of is stored in this file, including all the bullet characters, monetary designations, vulgur fractions, etc., it would seem the IPA would get tacked on in this file.

What's weird, at least to me, is that if you open the character/symbol pronunciation dialog a great deal of what's in the symbols.dic file never appears at all in the list for the Punctuation/Symbol pronunciation dialog where you'd manually enter this stuff.  Only the complex punctuation shows, then it skips right along to showing what I'll call the "emoji characters" which are not stored in the symbols.dic file, but in a file called cldr.dic that's stored in the same folder.   There's a third file in that folder, characterDescriptions.dic, that contains two columns, the first being the letter of the alphabet and the second being its callout word, e.g., A Alpha, B Bravo, C Charlie, etc.

Hi list ken here. Every so often on the computer dropbox will start to say what it usually says when it’s first starting. “dropbox c:program files .x86 and the up to date button and launch dropbox paper and so forth. It is completely random and it comes without warning. I posted a question to our radio station list and one other user is saying the same thing. Like me this other DJ on out of sight radio is using NVDA. I just double checked the addon and it’s up to date I have the latest version. According to this other user she’s not hearing this with jaws users on the station. She thinks NVDA is seeing something other screen readers don’t any ideas? Thanks.

All,

How do you find floating windows with NVDA other than using the

windows. I cannot find a similar command.

A floating window for those who might not know the terminology. Is a
window that is open by a program and is not attached to the program
and some of them are not even attached to the application ring (alt
tab). If the program does not place the focus correctly into the
window. Then you cannot access the window by the keyboard. Thus the
workaround which Jaws provides of listing all the windows helps here.

Hope someone can help.

Second question, just thought of. Are you able to remap keys in NVDA?

I don’t know what version this started with, because I don’t recall this
ever happening on my XP machine, but uTorrent now stays running in the
background if you don’t close it using the file menu method. So, if you just
hit alt-f4 to close most of your programmes, as I usually do, you might not
be aware that the torrent client is still running and that torrents are
probably still active. It even automatically reloads when you reboot your
system. Literally the only way to properly and really shut it down is by
using the “close” option in the file menu. If a user is unaware of that,
well, then yeah, he might end up with the problem you described there.

Hello,

While I agree with the community sharing aspect of torrent-like software,
one does need to understand how they work and the implications of the
process. Here is one experience I had about ten years ago. I hope that
today's technology helps one manage this situation better.

A friend who was using a torrent service on his then new computer asked me
to help with a severe performance problem on his system. Everything he tried
to do on the PC was taking a very long time. Logging on to the internet was
taking over five minutes. Opening a program was taking 2-3 minutes. Even
simple typing was taking 30-45 seconds for his typed characters to appear on
the screen.

After a lot of checking, we finally discovered that the problem was being
caused by the hytorrent process. He had used it to download lots of movies
and music and did not realize the upload implications of doing so. He did
not understand the upload side of the software. When we dug into it we found
that over 20 other users were actively uploading some of that material from
his PC. These uploads were consuming over 90% of his cpu and his hard disk
was working like mad to service the upload requests. Once we used the
controls available in the upload software to put some bounds and limits on
how much of his system the upload process could consume, his system became
useable again.

As I say, one does need to learn about the software products they are using.
In his case, he spent over a week with a system he could barely use and was
almost at the point of scrapping his PC and buying a new one, which would
not truly have helped him. Learning the software and its capabilities saved
him from a needless purchase and enabled him to continue sharing material
via the torrent approach for several more years.

and faster to download it.

And it won't hurt to let it use one or two KBs of your internet to allow a
faster download for the folks interested in that torrent.

Now imagine if everyone would think this way? It would be wonderful to the
community!

Actually this program has this little annoyance with NVDA, and I suspect it
does with any screen reader.

As a workaround, when you reach the point where NVDA reports about the
download in question, just press F2.

Yes, that's the command to rename a file, but doing it you'll be able to see
the current name of the download you're focused into and after you're done
with it you can just press esc to exit it without changing the info on the
field.

Hi

The website has been zipped you will need a program to unzip it. You can also do it with windows explorer but may be better to make a folder then put the files into it that is easy to find. Then it is a matter of just going to the index file with in the folder and pressing the enter key on it and use it like normal. As long as people have internet access they should be able to access audio files  etc.

There may be another tutorial been added on later this week so will update the link to the drop box account then.

I will let people know then.

The drop box link is https://www.dropbox.com/s/fh0ke305t6afduw/Accessibility%20Central%20Website.zip?dl=0

It sounds pretty serious like the server hard drive took a dive?

If any one wants to access the material on it at present I can zip it up and drop box it until it comes back on line.

This will only be the website files not the audio files as every one has access to the internet mostly.

You will then need to unzip it and put it into a folder with the files. Then it is a matter of just accessing the index file for the website.

I might again even look at other options for hosting.

Hi everyone,

SMILE We had this issue with Dropbox and it was so bad my husband was threatening to uninstall Dropbox unless I could fix it. Praise God, I was able to fix it for us at least. We're running the latest NVDA version with the latest Dropbox version and have a Lenovo computer in case that comes into play for anyone. I just followed someone's instructions and went into the Task Manager and stopped Dropbox from loading when the computer starts. After a restart of the computer is done, that fixed the problem, but if I go back into Dropbox through the system tray, which is how I have to do it now, I have to also click on the context key when I'm finished using Dropbox and exit it. We haven't had any problems like this thankfully since doing that. Is it a pain? Yes, as I forget to exit it sometimes, but I'd rather this than losing Dropbox and having to reinstall it later.

I have mine loading and have had no further problems. Doo you have any of the alerts on in the preferences? I do notice that if you open the menu from the tray icon, it says window, not menu, but now it does go away if you close it. I did ask for people with these issues to write to me when we had the open ticket at Dropbox on this list twice and nobody responded so to be honest, I suggest you take it up with dropbox yourselves now.
Its no longer an issue for me since the advice from Dropbox to turn off certain alerts. I deleted the screenshots folder in the system as well as dropbox occasionally try to shove an advert into it causing issues.

Hi, there was a weird transparent window issue a while back but the latest version seems to have stopped doing this. A guy at Dropbox called Geoff seems to be handling the issue, you might try emailing them about your problem as of course its no longer a problem here with the latest download.

Like me this other DJ on out of sight radio is using NVDA. I just double checked the addon and it’s up to date I have the latest version. According to this other user she’s not hearing this with jaws users on the station. She thinks NVDA is seeing something other screen readers don’t any ideas? Thanks.

Well Jaws is on the system does that work through the existing drivers?
It may be that other drivers are needed to use the display on nvda. Not having one I cannot say, but it seems to be suggesting nothing is being seen when it loads the drivers.

And, actually, it's not NVDA, it's the synthesizer being used.

This happens because of how these synths were programmed. So if whoever has programmed your synth has inserted into its code that "MB" next to a number should be read as megabyte, it's going to happen in any way.

hi,

I have a related question, why does NVDA expand stuff like kg, mbps, ms when written without spaces next to numbers, as kilograms, megabytes per second etc?
