Re: NVDA reading PowerPoint slide titles twice
Todd Venie <tvenie@...>
Hello Everyone,
Is NVDA supposed to read each title of a PowerPoint slide twice? By default, it is reading the slide title twice at the beginning of each slide. I changed the order of the objects in the selection pane, but that only changed when it read the title for the second time. Is there a way to edit my slides so that NVDA will read the slide titles only once?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: more on the alt tab issue
If I relocate it though that will brake other functions of the app. So it looks like I'm stuck with this issue until the public release comes out which will bein about 2-3 months. Take care.

Re: Punctuation/Symbol pronunciation
Jackie,
But, since virtually no one ever sets the NVDA level itself to "all," that's the reason for my little proviso in the last message, "under typical NVDA settings conditions." I think virtually anyone would be driven mad were NVDA's own level set to "all" as its default (or even temporarily). I thought about the dictionary, too, but wasn't sure how single characters (symbols, really) strung together would be treated. It seems to me that the speech dictionaries use the concept of "word" and in most cases for the IPA reading we want character by character announcement whenever an IPA word is encountered. If each IPA symbol were a word in the dictionary it seemed to me that this would prevent the very character by character announcement in all cases that I was seeking for non-whitespace-separated sequences of the IPA symbols wherever they occurred. Perhaps I'm mistaken about that. Also, as an aside, does NVDA interpret lower case single characters as sometimes being pronounced differently than uppercase? For example, if I were to use 'a' (sans the quotes, of course) as the replacement text for something might I get "ah" being pronounced while if I were to use 'A' I'd get what you'd expect for saying the name of the letter A? One substitution I've made long ago in my default dictionary is that 'nvda' is replaced for the synth with 'NVDA' because the two were not treated as the equivalent, and the former came out as something close to phonotactically impossible under the rules of English pronunciation. -- Brian - Windows 10 Home, 64-Bit, Version 1809, Build 17763 A great deal of intelligence can be invested in ignorance when the need for illusion is deep. ~ Saul Bellow, To Jerusalem and Back

Re: Punctuation/Symbol pronunciation

Actually, Brian, the symbols that are set to 'all' do get read if NVDA
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
punctuation is set to all. It's a horrible setting for casual reading, but, when you're programming & correct punctuation will make or break the program, as is often the case, then it's a necessary setting. You said: "When I first started looking at this I was interpreting the level as a "speak under what conditions" descriptor, taking "all" as meaning speak always and none as meaning "don't ever speak it."" I could tell that was what was confusing you. Since you stated you had a history as a programmer, I was hoping a little pseudocode demo would clarify this whole concept for you. I agree about the documentation, of course. There is a brief snippet in the NVDA user's guide, but it might not be as instructive to someone who is struggling w/the concept. At any rate, I'm really thinking that what it appears you wish to do might better be done by using the dictionary.

Re: Punctuation/Symbol pronunciation
Jackie,
That pseudocode sequence helps a lot. It also confirms that the meaning of the levels, essentially, is a "skip this under what conditions" setting, where none gets you constant reading (skip none), and, under typical NVDA settings conditions, all gets you never read (skip all). When I first started looking at this I was interpreting the level as a "speak under what conditions" descriptor, taking "all" as meaning speak always and none as meaning "don't ever speak it." For me, it seemed that some of the descriptions during this exchange were each saying the above (though only one of the above). This is also not documented well anywhere that I can find, which made things worse. I realize that these sorts of "under the hood" level functions are seldom twiddled, but that makes documentation regarding same even more essential for when someone actually wants or needs to twiddle. -- Brian - Windows 10 Home, 64-Bit, Version 1809, Build 17763 A great deal of intelligence can be invested in ignorance when the need for illusion is deep. ~ Saul Bellow, To Jerusalem and Back

Re: O.T looking for answer of some question regarding python
Antony Stone
Firstly, I think this question is best suited for the chat sub-group, since as
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
you say in your subject line, it is off-topic and not at all NVDA specific. However, that said, I'm afraid the answer is that you can write anything you like in Python. It is a general-purpose scripting language (which can also be compiled), and I don't think it's possible to suggest limitations on what you could write in it if you wanted to. Regards, Antony.

It is global though unless you use the profile. They are now rurally easy, set one up when the program you want to change is in focus and then set any parameters or triggers you need and then use the buttons to come out. Next time you go to that application the changes you made come into effect.

For some reason in the emails to the list from you, I see no reply to sender directly, but I think you need to look at the headers of the copies to see what is going on. I'm sure its a google 'feature' you are encountering here. This is one reason why I hardly ever subscribe to a list with a gmail address if imm not going to use it with pop3.
