          What you're looking for sounds an awful lot like the age-old sticky keys feature under Windows.  It's in the Ease of Access settings, Keyboard pane in Windows 10 and I know it exists at least back to Windows 7, if not earlier.

Oh, by the way, FreemakeVC tries to install additional software when it is installed. Make sure you uncheck these items.

Rebooting did not cure it yesterday, only making it think an earlier update was running worked by replacing the registry.

It was likely a false alarm.  Have you rebooted since?  If you reboot and you get no such message, it is very unlikely anything to worry about.  if you reboot and do get such a message, what screen-reader are you using?  I suspect the message also said something like click here to address the problem.

However, if you want to check your security settings before doing any of this, do the following:
Open the start menu.  Type the word security.
Then after a moment, read the current line.  If it isn't what you want, look through many of the options.  Down arrow through them. If you find what you want, press enter.

You will find what you want, as one of the items says chec security status. I just checked.

One of the main improvements in Windows 7 is that you don't have to look for things as you did in XP.  Use the start menu search and you'll fined most things, even if you don't know what they are called.  The start menu search is designed to find things when the technical or exact words aren't used. for example, use the start menu search to search for uninstall programs or uninstall a program.  You will find relevant results even though you didn't use the technical name.  I don't remember it any more.  But you will find entries in plain English such as remove a program.

This is important to know not only for Windows 7 but, though I haven't checked because I haven't used higher versions of Windows, I'm sure they all have this feature.

I find it a bit unfair to compare something with a retail product where money is likely being exchanged for the research and development. I have several voices in several languages installed on Windows as
OneCore voices.

By default, I use a French male voice, Paul.

For English, I have several voices: Hazel, Mark, Susan, Zira, David, George.

I have activated language switching and dialect switching in the speech
options.

So when I come on a web page, let's say, nvaccess.org, Mark is speaking.

If I want that NVAccess web site should be read with Hazer or Susan, is
there a way to tell him to do so without using a specific profile?

Same question, if I am on a page that is written in French and English,
I would rather have the language changes read by Hazer instead of Mark
and that NVDA then returns to the French speaking Paul.

I do suspect that it could be a corrupt file, usually windows defender gets updates immediately.

While last nights one came out just fine, the one for this morning which usually is there when I turn on the system did not appear till 9am local time.

That could be why it was late, though it did appear.

because i disabled windows update and did not install antivirus software!
the message is a button that you can press enter on it and you recieve
recommendation for antivirus, update, etc.
