Go to the tray notification and hit space then cursor up and down the options. One is preferences, and after that you can open that, but you may need to jiggle around a bit to get the various bits to work.
Its strange as on a Windows 10 machine this seems to work fine, but on my windows 7 machines three is an exception error and I have to get a sighted person to navigate the dialogue as it appears blank. I'm convinced this is a problem caused by an uninstall some time ago though.
I've only had the odd alert like do you know you can store your pictures and stuff like that. At least the transparent phantom window seems to have gone away since a number of of had a moan.

The new dev list on groups.io

Yesterday, Mick posted that the new list has now become active on groups.io, so I went to the site, grabbed the addresses used to subscribe and post and sent off the subscribe message, and nothing has happened. I normally see an emial to confirm its me who asked to subscribe, which you then need to reply to. Not a bean has arrived. I did try a test post to it, as that should generate a bounce if I'm not subscribed but nothing doing there. Can anyone confirm the group is actually working as I just changed my message rules to allow them through, but I've seen nothing at all. If it is working then over the weekend I'll strip out my message rule and see if I can get the emails from the list before trying again. I guess it could be that one of my other rules is eating the posts, but I'd expect to see them on an imap feed and I don't.

Sorry for the interlude.. back to normal service.

Yes but nothing like a smoking gun in the one I managed to get, assuming it was the same issue, and I was using Espeak, and its been pretty reliable of late and as I said in my last post, it looked a bit like a lot of nvda was suspended but that is about it. Could be something in the detection of what api to use when I suppose but I'd expect to see a lot of verbosity in the log for it trying different things to read the text.

You don't know what is crashing if all you know is that you lose speech. You can't assume that losing speech means NVDA crashes. It may be the speech synthesizer. Others can tell you what to send as far as information, but the log needs to be seen to determine what has chrashed and other information.

It doesn’t happen all the time but intermittently. I was trying to read a message when all of a sudden I lost speech. I didn’t reboot the computer after installing the latest version of NVDA but maybe that might be a good idea from now on. I haven’t installed any add-ons.

Firstly, have you restarted the computer after updating NVDA? While I'd like to say you shouldn't need to, in practice, I've found it does occasionally cause random problems.



If you can find a situation which reliably causes issues, could you please record the exact steps so I can try and replicate it.



If you are using any add-ons, make sure they are up to date, and also try running NVDA with add-ons disabled to see if that makes a difference: Press NVDA+q, then down arrow to "Restart with add-ons disabled" and press ENTER to restart NVDA. Then replicate the steps which crashed NVDA and see if they still do.



Finally, if you could send us a copy of your nvda.log, nvda-old.log and crash dump, we can have a look and see what is going on.

I seem to remember I reported this a bit back when the first beta came out. Its on Windows 7, and the rule of thumb is like this. All is well for ages, then something not sure what stops it, but its not actually crashed, just extremely slow. After maybe a couple of minutes it will return. I've triggered it most often in legacy software like Outlook Express or programs that use the older default open file or save a file dialogues where the typing slows right down and stops, then will in the fullness of time come back. No sign of anything in the nvda log, occasionally a few core frozen in stack messages but then you can often see the keys you press but nothing much else. It happened big time yesterday on an old copy of Word 2003, being used on Windows 7. Try as I might, after all the various reboots I could not get it to do it again. If its a new bug its going to be a swine to track down. In all cases though more than one application was open at a time and I was switching between them on a windows 7 machine.


I'll keep an eye out, but unless somebody has a burst of inspiration, I'm a little stuck on this one.

XP doesn't have the start menu search feature and you did have to go directly to what you wanted to open and know its name.

Hi there, if you are using xp. If you have to uninstall a program. You always have to go to the control panel.  I can’t remember where in the control panel you had to go. But for windows 7 its there too. But you had to go to programs and features.  Windows ten it’s different. Almost the same as 7.  I’ll look and see where you uninstall programs.  I know on ten you have to go to the control panel.  In xp and 7 you could uninstall programs in the start menue.  I always did it in the control panel.

the only place which i recognize that it can find my desired item,

google search.

i describe story sometimes for google and google finds immediate my

desired option or item for me!

If you are using any add-ons, make sure they are up to date, and also try running NVDA with add-ons disabled to see if that makes a difference:  Press NVDA+q, then down arrow to "Restart with add-ons disabled" and press ENTER to restart NVDA.  Then replicate the steps which crashed NVDA and see if they still do.

Finally, if you could send us a copy of your nvda.log, nvda-old.log and crash dump, we can have a look and see what is going on.

then, if i dont remember the name and like xp, search add-remove

the only place which i recognize that it can find my desired item,

even if i dont know the exact sentences, words or even spelling, is

google search.

i describe story sometimes for google and google finds immediate my

desired option or item for me!

Just stepping back for a moment, we have four types of builds we release:

Alpha builds are our regular snapshot builds.  As we update code day to day and add new features or fix things, that goes into alpha builds.  Because only a couple of people may have tested something before it goes into an alpha build, we don't guarantee that it is stable, and we definitely encourage anyone to keep a stable copy of NVDA handy rather than using an alpha build as your ONLY copy, just in case.

When we are coming up towards the time for a new stable release, we put everything we want to keep together, and call it a beta release (we sometimes test something in an alpha release that we know isn't ready for a stable version but we might use as a "proof of concept".  Things like that which aren't ready for release would not be included in beta versions).

When we think the beta is looking pretty stable and we're not getting any negative feedback about it, we move to a release candidate.  A Release Candidate (RC) build is a build we believe is stable and should work for pretty much all users.  Once we release that, if we don't get any feedback about major issues with it, in a week or so, we will basically rename it as the final stable version and release it as NVDA 2019.1.

Depending on the number of people who test various builds and the amount of feedback - positive and negative - we may have only one build of a given type, or we may have several.

So, the closer we get to a release, the fewer changes will be from one release to the next.  Once we've got a version fairly stable, we only want to add specific fixes to showstopping bugs, so as not to risk breaking something else.  Once we have announced the translation freeze, we also don't want to make any changes to "strings" or announcement text that NVDA reads, as this can then break the files that all our wonderful translators are working on before the next release.

So the process is actually a lot longer and more complex than many people realise, but does result in a more stable product at the end.

They are not really the same thing. RC1 includes localization updates
provided by a group of volunteer translators, along with internal fix so
code contributors can have an easier time testing their work before asking
for a code review from others.

Apologies for the delay replying!  We are back and the presentation was very well received.  Unfortunately the CSUN organisers have always been very strict about not allowing presentations to be recorded.

NVDA and Office 2019

Hi,  Just got Office 2019 and it works beautifully with NVDA 2019 beta 1.  Not only are all the components accessible, but there is no lag or delay of any kind.  NVDA's responsiveness is in fact, better than it is with Office 2016.  excellent work on the part of the developers.  Cheers!
