Re: Getting current column in word when you're in 2 column format?

Quentin Christensen

If you use Draft layout, it will present the information in a single column view (changing to Print layout view shows the information in two columns.

Columns are a bit odd in Word.  If you use down arrow it jumps to the next page without moving to column 2. If you press control+down arrow / control+up arrow to move between paragraph, it correctly moves between columns as needed.  Also if you read with say all (NVDA+down arrow or NVDA+A in laptop layout) it reads in the correct order.

Regards

Quentin.

Is there any way to tell what column I'm in?

To format a document with 2 columns, go to format, columns, and choose 2. You need to have text selected first though I believe.

Is that just an observation about draft view speeding things up Brian, or are you saying Office 2003 slowing and hanging with formatting info reported is a new thing in NVDA 2019.1?

Re: sleep module no longer working after upgrading to 2019.1

John O'Regan <john.a.oregan@...>

Hi Again,

Please disregard my previous post. The problem has been resolved.
Turns out the filenames in the scratchpad/appModules are
case-sensitive. Which is to say, if you want NVDA to fall asleep
whenever TWBlue gains focus, the name of the .py file must match the
process name listed in Task Manager exactly. In other words:

twblue.py

works, whereas:

twBlue.py

does not.

I hope the section on the sleep module in the NVDA Developer's Guide
will be updated to remind readers that in order for the sleep module
to work, scratchpad must first be enabled from Advanced Settings, and
that the names of .py files in the scratchpad/appModules directory
must match their corresponding .exe counterparts _exactly_.

BFN!

John

Re: Stop reading dashes

Arno,

I would suggest using the default dictionary in speech dictionaries to fix this to your liking.  You could also use a voice dictionary if you only want this to be in effect when you're using the specific voice specified.   Here are the steps.

1. Hit NVDA+N,P,D, then follow that D by a D if you wish to use the default dictionary or V if you wish to use the voice dictionary.
2. Hit ALT+A to activate the add button.
3. In the Pattern edit box, enter (\+|\*|-){3,}    This specifies if there are more than three plus signs or asterisks or minus signs in a row, they'll be matched
4. In the Replacement box, enter whatever you want NVDA to say instead, I used separator line.  Every time a long string of any of the above specified characters are encountered NVDA says, "separator line" instead.  If you leave the replacement empty, it will say nothing.  Personally, I find the "say nothing" option dangerous, as I'd prefer to know that one of the above has been hit.  You could use something like sep instead of separator line if you want something quick.
5. The comment can be whatever you wish.  It's just a way to help you to remember what this entry is all about when you edit the dictionary at a later time.
6. Leave the case sensitive checkbox unchecked.
7. Activate the Regular Expression radio button.
8. OK your way out of the dictionary settings.

Re: Question about braille sign

Jonathan COHN

Hello,

Sometimes characters with different meanings are used by visual writers because they feel they look better. For example, quote symbols can be just a straight line, or can curve toward the quoted text. In the latter case there is a different symbol for left and right quotes. I'm not sure if UNICODE designates a separate code for apostrophe vs single quote but if so, then there are three possibilities of what a sighted person might place in the apostrophe location. Further complicating this, is that the US English keyboard has only one key that is used for both apostrophe and quote and so often the word processor replaces the single quote with a more appropriate symbol.  Microsoft Word calls this smart quotes and it can be configured in the auto correct area of settings.
Now, the libelous is translating back from UNICODE to Braille and must decide for every   unicode character what to do with it.
What should you do?
1. Read by character and see how NVDA reads the individual character.
2. If NVDA says apostrophe then this is a bug in NVDA Braille translation tables that are provided by libelous.
Otherwise it might just be a rogue web designer.

If you consistently find that a particular non apostrophe character is used for the apostrophe, it might still be possible to get the Braille translator to re interpret it mid-word as an apostrophe.

Stop reading dashes

Arno Schuh

Hi,

is there a feature in NVDA that prevent NVDA of reading the same character in several lines?
I get many newslettters and more and more they separate paragraphs with lines of the same character - i. e. dashes, stars, plus signs etc.
Look at this example:
http://mail.trustedshops.com/3x7ujryr-4r2g1zxi-o2cgw1lz-17sq)

I use a Vocalizer voice in NVDA.

Yours sincerely

sleep module no longer working after upgrading to 2019.1

John O'Regan <john.a.oregan@...>

Hello All,

I've been using NVDA for many years now. Mostly for editing text
files with the Notepad2 editor. I've configured JAWS to go to sleep
when Notepad2 is the current app, and NVDA falls silent when most
everything else has focus. I achieved this by using the example sleep
module described in the NVDA Developer's Guide.

Unfortunately, the sleep module stopped working properly when I
upgraded to NVDA 2019.1. I enabled the scratchpad directory and moved
all the files from the old appModules directory to the new
scratchpad/appModules directory. Initially, all seemed well. NVDA
didn't speak when IE had focus, but when I typed into a text field,
both NVDA and JAWS spoke at once. And when I Alt+Tabbed to Windows
Explorer, the sleep instruction in the explorer.py file was ignored
and both NVDA and JAWS spoke at once. Tools > Reload Plugins fixed
this issue, but only temporarily. As soon as I switched to another
window, both JAWS and NVDA were speaking again.

Please help!

John

Guys, the most recent firefox update stops autoplay by default, which,
IMO, is a *really* good thing & long past overdue. You can change the
behavior by going into tools > options > privacy & security > block
websites from automatically playing sounds. The next button is for
exceptions, ie, if you want youtube to begin playing videos everytime
you go there, then add it to the exceptions list.

HTH.

If you try to select either Eloquence or Vocalizer from the synthesizer option under Settings/speech it just asks you to register the voices, and offers you a button to click to continue to the registration page. Again, when I press this button, nothing happens.

Guenni, this is probably an apostrophe in Unicode, likely UTF8. It is
generally considered correct coding procedure to signify the language
& character encoding of the document. Failure to do so throws errors
in all browser development tools, so the likelihood is that there's
really no way to fix it. If the author did not specify an encoding
method, then perhaps the text encoding item on the view menu can help
you fix it. But, as I said, that's normally not the case, as
specifying this is really standard coding procedure.
