Re: whats the best version of firefox for using with old systems?

See this forum discussion. the instructions
are similar, but not the same.
This is a long link. When I went to the
actual link, the page didn't load. This is a Google cache.
I may have been wrong, this appears to be related
to multicore processing but it isn't clear to me if it matters unless you are
doing something such as I described, having multiple tabs open when you start
the browser. I read something indicating that multicore processing should
speed up opening multiple web pages.
I'm still skeptical that it should cause what you,
Brian are describing. Also, the last message in the forum discussion is
very tentative about whether doing this helped. it says something like,
maybe a little faster. I realize that's just one comment from one person
and can't be generalized from. but it adds to my skepticism.

processors. It sounds like turning off Firefox's ability to open more than
one tab as multiple home pages when you run it. It won't do so anyway
unless you set multiple home pages. I've never looked into how to do
that. The wording of what you are discussing discusses multiple tabs,
which has nothing to do with multiple cores. Multiple core operation means
that a program can use more than one core in a processor so that the tasks are
spread out and can be done faster because, in essence, more than one processing
unit is working on them.
As far as the browser being designed to use
multiple cores, that diagnosis of the slower response in version 52 doesn't
sound correct to me. I am not a tech, and I may be wrong. I would
expect that if a computer only has one core, the program will use that one core
and it will use it as it always did. Where,
Brian, did you get the information that the multicore design is responsible for
the slower operation? that just doesn't sound plausible to
me.

GoldWave add-on 19.04, localization update and last version to support NVDA releases earlier than 2019.1
#addonrelease
Hi all,
In a few hours GoldWave add-on 19.04 will be released. This one is a minor update that brings latest and greatest localization updates for many languages.
IMPORTANT COMPATIBILITY NOTICE: GoldWave add-on 19.04 will be the last version to support NVDA versions earlier than 2019.1 (currently this add-on supports NVDA 2017.3 and later in consideration for people using Windows XP). At least 30 days after Python 3 version of NVDA is released (TBD), GoldWave add-on will require:
For people who are not using the combination specified above, GoldWave add-on 19.04 will be the last version. The following groups of people will be affected:
Reason for requiring NVDA 2019.1 (or for that matter, 2018.4) and later: NVDA 2018.4 introduces a much improved way to assign multiple commands to a script (specifically, via scriptHandler.script decorator). For GoldWave add-on, this eases assigning GoldWave native commands to routines performed by NVDA.
Python 3 compatibility notice (for reference purposes): GoldWave add-on is compatible with a future Python 3 version of NVDA.
Cheers, Joseph

Just curious, but why wouldn't one use goldwave 6? Maybe if you were still on XP, I could understand sticking with an old version -- in that case you can no longer keep NVDA up to date either.

There have been a lot of messages on the list about this, but the explanation seems to be that firefox does not autoplay by default. This change is welcome by many of us, including me.

I did a little more testing and, as you suggested, the problem is when more than 512 characters are selected. This can only happen in Notepad when word wrap is unchecked as then you can have a whole paragraph appearing as a single line of unwrapped text. Re: NVDA at logon
Luke Davis
A question on this topic:
In Older days (Vista and possibly Win 7), if NVDA was not set to run on the logon screen, it would also not read UAC dialogs or applications that ran under elevated privileges. Unless that was just a fluke of my machines. Anyway, I just tested under Win 10, and found this no longer to be the case. If I remove NVDA from the logon screen, reboot and log in, it will still read UAC screens, although it does so with the saved configuration that was in effect for the "use on logon and other secure screens", as I can determine from the differing speech rate and volume. I had thought (but never had it confirmed), that in order to run on the logon and other secure screens, a separate instance of NVDA had to run. If that is the case, then the behavior I experienced in Vista seems reasonable. However if that's the case, how is it running now that I have removed NVDA from the logon screen, presumably disabling the ability for that instance to run with administrative privileges? Not that I'm complaining, but I am curious. I ask because this might in some way be related to the original question about NVDA failing to stop running on the logon screen. Then again, i could be totally off base about how this works, and it may not be related in the slightest. I also wonder if you have tried enabling it to run on the logon screen, rebooting, and then disabling it again. Luke
