I Can't get the latest version of NVDA to install

James Bentley <bentleyj1952@...>

Hi all,

I went to:

and downloaded a very small file that looks like it is suppose to install NVDA.  When I open it, I get a few seconds of music and then nothing.

I have tried with both Chrome and IE for over 24 hours now.  So, maybe someone can tell me what I am doing wrong?

Cheers,

Re: Suggestion for a Possible Option Regarding NVDA Profiles

We have an open issue for an option to have a profile associated with a specific website.  Conceptually, what the original poster is asking for (a profile for a particular file in Notepad, or any program really) is similar. The discussion on the issue has explored the intricacies of trying to work out what a user actually wants in specifying a website, and how to do that, but depending on how it is implemented, a solution to that could potentially also work for this scenario, or could be a different solution:  https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/4442

Brian,
I'm afraid that turning the synth ring on a "second rotor" won't be the best solution in this case.
When I mentioned profiles, it's because with this option, we can create a sort of preset for what window we want. All I suggested was developing this option, an already existing one, a bit more.
Why do ask to the developers to reinvent the wheel if they could save their time just improving something that's already there and does what it should do?

How would this be useful though?
I mean you can do it on say all of course, it might be more interesting to have your preferred settings on a rotor like the synth ring so you can sequence through them according to the one you want for that application.

Subject: [nvda] Suggestion for a Possible Option Regarding NVDA Profiles

Hi, guys,
Playing with my favorite part of NVDA now, which is described on the
subject line, I just thought about something that I guess it could be
quite useful.
I don't know whether it's possible at all, but it would be nice if we
could make a trigger for a profile from the window title, or, better
yet, from parts of it.
Example, suppose I want to make a profile for when I'm reading something
on Notepad, but I want this profile to be triggered just with this
specific document. Same goes, then, for a specific webpage.
Now, with this option, on the field "window title" or something like
that, I would type something like:
"My File - Notepad".
Or else
" file - Notepad".
In the first example, the trigger is "My File - Notepad". This means
that nothing apart from "My File - Notepad" would be assumed as the trigger.
However, there also could be an option to check or uncheck regarding
cap-sensitive triggers.
In the second example, everything ending with " File - Notepad" would be
assumed as the trigger. This means, for example, that even if I had a
file called "Test File", opening it on Notepad would trigger the profile
in question.

Don't know if I could explain it as I'd like, but if this thread gets
some interest, we can discuss it further and I can try to explain better :)

Ok, If I disable the following checkbox:

Enable audio effects (only for the current weather conditions

the NVDA+w works as expected. With the checkbox enabled, nothing happens. I tried redownloading sounds, then I tried deleting and redownloading sounds. Still, none of that works. It is only when I completely disable that checkbox that NVDA+w works as expected. As I said previously, this is only present in the latest Weather Plus update.

Re: wanted free voices

hurrikennyandopo ...

Hi v

Not sure if any of the voices in the speech platform package will suit your needs. there are voices for both english and other languages that i do not speak

I can drop box them for you they are about 340 meg with all voices and the speech platform runtime engine.

You will need a program like 7 zip or one that can unzip the files for you first. When done look for the speech platform runtime engine and install it first. It is the only file that does not have the name of the file with TTS in in standing for text to speech and the name of the voice and language.

You can get it from my drop box account at https://www.dropbox.com/s/0rokrf6a4qijsvf/Speech%20Platform%2011%20engine%20and%20voices.zip?dl=0

The speech hub package also has other synths and voices but in a package and can be gotten off the following website at http://www.speakon.org.uk/

When you download the speech hub package you will also need to install the add on so nvda can see the synths and voices. So the main package will get installed then under your c: drive program files x86 then speech hub then the folder for the add on it will need to be installed into nvda. Then later on you can change to those other synth and voices.

There may be other software there that you may like to try.

What add-ons are you using?  It's most likely one of those since you say you don't have the issue with JAWS and I'm presuming that you're not changing anything about your computer itself when you're running either JAWS or NVDA.

The solution is generally disabling all add-ons and re-enabling, one by one, until the problem occurs again, then you have your culprit.  Then, if the add-on supports key remapping (and many do) you'd change whatever it uses F4 for to use a different key for that function so that F4 is allowed to pass down to MS-Excel.

The Add-Ons I'm using, which clearly are not a part of this problem since it doesn't happen with them enabled, are:
Add-on Updater
Easy Table Navigator
Focus Highlight
Golden Cursor
Image describer
NoBeepsSpeechMode
ObjPad
Remote Support
Windows 10 App Essentials

In looking at the NVDA Commands Quick Reference, under the EcoBraille section, it notes that F4 gets used for "Move to previous object."

When screen readers and other assistive software are involved there is a distinct keystroke interception hierarchy where if you're using something "above" the application layer that uses a given keystroke that's where it will stop rather than being passed on down to the application itself.

I just tested F4, with NVDA not in use and with NVDA active, and it did "repeat last action" in both situations.   I have a number of add-ons active, so it's not NVDA nor one of the add-ons I use.   There has got to be something active that expects the F4 key for some other purpose and that intercepts it, preventing it from making it to MS-Excel.

Re: Last action in ms excel key F4

Giles Turnbull

In my sighted days I used the F4 shortcut in Excel a lot. Brian, in a nutshell it does exactly what Ahtesham said it does ... it performs the last action you did so that you can apply the same action to another cell. For example, if you format the text in one cell to be bold or blue, pressing the F4 key in the next cell down would repeat that action, turning its text bold or blue. Likewise you might want to change the date format from 7 April 2019 to 07/04/2019 in a few non-adjacent cells, in which case you can apply the format to the first cell and then move to the next cell(s) and repeat the formatting without having to navigate the ribbon or menues to manually apply the same format.

Although I've used NVDA exclusively since 2012 and just assumed something had changed in Excel and the F4 shortcut no longer worked for anybody, I did recently install JAWS 2019 and I can confirm the F4 shortcut does still work using JAWS. I made a cell bold with CTRL+b and then pressed F4 to apply the same effect to half a dozen different cells.

Thanks for the fascinating information Larry!

On 4/7/19, Larry Wang <larry.wang.801@...> wrote:
There are numerous Chinese input methods. This was a key problem when
processing Chinese with computers. There are roughly one hunderd
thousand number of Chinese characters. About six thousand of them are
mostly used in daily life. But there are only about one hunderd keys on
keyboard. At first publishing houses use big key board with many keys.
Input methods based on pinyin or zhuyin is not very popular at that time
since you need to spend many time on finding the correct character you
want to type. Also users at that time mostly rely on word processing
jobs, accuracy and efficiency is important.
A man called Wang JiangMin invented WuBi.With that you can type in most
Chinese character within four letters, as long as you memorize a set of
rules and practice for about a week.
At about 2006, people brought smart prediction into pinyin input
methods. The experience of pinyin input methods are much better now.
Since most people in mainland China have already learned pinyin in
primary school. Other types of input methods which requires additional
rules practice start fading away. Few people learn other input methods.
Wubi and other input methods are now learned by professionals and
enthusiasts. Sougou is the most popular one of these pinyin input
methods. But smart prediction is based on collecting your keyborad input
data, so there is a privacy issue. Sougou pinyin also pop up
advertisement sometimes. So I do not recomment using this. Input methods
bundled with operation system is just enough.

Support for microsoft pinyin and wubi is broken in windows 10 and 8.1 so
you may find it hard to use.

As for braille.
There are three types of braille in mainland China. Two of them are in
NVDA, another one has just been published about a year ago and has not
gain popularity yet. However all of them are based on pinyin. They
cannot represent the shape of Chinese characters. Most schools for blind
in mainland China do not teach how to write Chinese characters. So even
if you use braille input, you still have to choose between many
candidates. Someone created a braille based on Chinese characters, but
it is not widely used. Braille display is more expensive than smart
phones and computers and its usage is very limited. Braille has
advantage in proof reading and learing but the nature of Chinese braille
make braille less appealing for students. Word segmentation and tone
mark makes braille even harder to understand. Even braile itself is not
popular among blind people in China.
