Five to seven favorite metro apps

David Mehler

Hello Everyone,

I've got an unexpected opportunity to do some training. One of the
avenues will be NVDA and Windows 10. This is from a newbie perspective
to both NVDA and to Windows 10. What I'd like to know and this is to
those of you who use Universal apps, also known as Metro apps, I'd
like to know your Five to seven favorite (most accessible can not live
without them), metro apps. I'd also like to know the opposite of that,
three metro apps you'd love to use, but they are just not accessible.

Thanks.
Dave.

Re: Windows update doesn't work

Brian's Mail list account BY <bglists@...>

Yes me too, one of the biggest issues with windows seems to be on a machine which is not always on the internet, ie has no network or dongle or whatever.
I find that since a lot of updates like anti virus and monthly updates happen in the background one can get into a position where the machine resets for no apparent reason randomly. The only fix I've found for this was to take it to a permanent location with a connection and let it sort itself out, can take a day or so for it to stabilise. In the old days of XP it was relatively easy to stop everything trying to update itslef, but since more recent versions I've noticed that this is not so easy at all, and with third party programs things get a whole lot worse.
Unfortunately due to the nature of where the machine is used, the internet cannot be allowed to do as it likes as its charged by the gig, and its a charity paying the bills!
Nobody seems to have thought about this problem very much.

Probably not, I do wander if some of this stuff is just windows saying it can't, however it may try to find a solution anyway windows usually can do this on its own.
You may need to get drivers or bios updates from asia or whatever depends on the age.
I have never seen windows quit unless it simply can't.
If it says it doesn't work but then does chances are its earching its databases and trying to get it to work.

It obviously found what it needed.
While windows has a lot of itself on your system, it doesn't get everything so I have seen errors about accounts not recognised or system being corrupted or not responding only to have the system pop back online later on I just have to wait.

Have you enabled the capslock key as an additional NVDA key? It should make the pageup/down keystroke more comfortable.

Hello,

Thank you. For me I have read the manual, I do better with audio learning like a podcast or something.

Thanks for the information.

My issue is the NVDA+ page up or down, not an easy key sequence on my keyboard.

Suggestion has been made to get a bluetooth external fullsized keyboard, I don't like this option as it's one more thing to carry.

Thanks.

You can have a portable copy of NVDA on a memory stick and use it on
any computer. NVDA doesn't need admin privileges to run like other

NVDA and pizza sites

Hello,

My apologies if this is a repeat message. I sent t his to another list

Is anyone using NVDA with online food ordering sites? In particular
online pizza ordering sites, dominos.com and pizzahut.com? I'm
particularly wanting to do custom ordering, but this really doesn't
work.

Thanks.

Seems this browser uses something like some of chrome's elements to render actual web content, and just gave it a very quick try, but, the main reason is since, according the wired.com review came across of it, it's highly customisable in terms of most of it's interface - haven't had a chance to try too much of that as of yet, but, yes, could browse the 'net with it, and, while don't know many keyboard shortcuts - think you can also customise them, it seems usable:

Subject: Re: [nvda] Nvda crashes

Hi, both checboxes r checked.  No, pressing the shortcut key combination does nothing.  A friend of mine gave me the combination of NVDA plus control + s, but I haven't tried this one yet.

Hi Tony,

After you log in to Windows and NVDA stops talking, can you press CONTROL+ALT+N to start it up again?

On the NVDA General settings page (NVDA+G to get there directly once you've got NVDA running), you've got "Use NVDA on the Windows Logon screen" checked.  Do you also have the item before that - "Automatically start NVDA after I logon to Windows" checked?  Without that one checked, NVDA will run on the logon screen so you or another user can login, but NOT after you login.  In which case, you'd need to start NVDA manually after you login.

Setting both of those to checked should make NVDA talk on the login screen then automatically start up once you login.

Kind regards

Quentin.

Hi, I have a rather serious problem with NVDA.  It talks on the secure desktop but as soon as i log  into Windows it just stops working.  I think I know what the problem is but I don't know how to fix it without speech.  I downloaded and installed and STK for spai5, thinking that would give me more voices to choose from, but it didn't
And now I think somehow that SDK is interfering with nvda.  Any thoughts? From the rising of the sun, to the setting, to its rising again, we place what is hard to endure with what is sweet to remember, and find peace.  (Animorphs 33)

Re: Windows update doesn't work

Are you talking about an update of a machine whcih was already running Windows
10, or an upgrade of Windows 7 (or 8) to Windows 10, and you didn't have
Windows 10 previously?

Which model of Acer laptop is it?

Subject: [nvda] laptop layout

Hello,

I'm using the latest NVDA 2016 on a development laptop. This machine
does not have a keypad. I've gone over the manual for laptop layout
with regards object navigation and screen review, I am just not
getting it.

Does anyone have any pointers? Things that'll stick in the memory?

Thanks.
Dave.

Despite them saying they will not be forcing updates, I've erred on the side of caution and put in never10 which can toggle the registry switch for this update.

Hi Group,

Well, I am glad to say, you can disregard the status line bug I reported in my last message to this list. It turns out I had a pop-under that I didn't see right away that was causing things to read improperly. It was that Microsoft Bug wanting me to upgrade to Windows 10. I thought I turned that off, but for some reason, it came back. Once I dismissed this bark screen, everything is normal again in Thunderbird.
