Re: saving a list of headings

Cearbhall O'Meadhra

Thanks for your very helpful notes, Rick,

I did not realise that so many categories were available to be listed under NVDA + F7 nor that I could select the different categories. I could not find any advice on this feature in the NVDA user manual. If I have missed it, could you point me to the entry in the manual for future reference?

To answer your question, I need to collect all the headings in a document that I need to re-organise. The paragraph contents under the headings are perfect but the way the document is structured badly needs reworking. In my setup NVDA does not say anything about levels such as you describe. I simply get the text of the headings but no idea what level they are at. Since you do get these levels, I suppose there must be some control that I have turned off somewhere that enables the levels to be spoken. Can you clarify that for me?

I should mention that I am using NVDA2019.1.1 runnign in Windows 10. I use Office 2016 for spread sheets, documents and mail and Firfox for internet access.

All the best,

Cearbhall

Hello Cearbhall:

Did you mean NVDA+F7 to open the elements dialog?

This brings up a list of elements which are grouped in categories. For example, when browsing the web, the categories are:

  • Links
  • Headings
  • Form fields
  • Buttons
  • Landmarks

In the headings group, NVDA announces levels instead of heading numbers. Level 0 corresponds to Heading1, Level 1 corresponds to Heading2, etc. When using the up and down arrow keys to navigate the list of headings, NVDA announces the level at the end, except when the level changes. Then it is announced at the beginning. For properly nested headings, you can collapse and expand the list using left and right arrow keys. NVDA announces if the level is collapsed or expanded.

I am not sure why you need the extra verbosity for links, since when viewing links in that category, only links are present. NVDA even announces if a link has been visited. Same for buttons and landmarks.

Hi,

I can see that NVDA + F6 lists elements including headings, links and so on. However, the list does not identify what each element is as I scroll down through the elements. I would like to hear NVDA say heading 1, Heading 2, or even link when each element is highlighted in the list.

Is there a setting somewhere that allows me to turn on this verbosity? If so, I cannot find it but I would welcome your advice.

Is it possible to save the elements list as a text file that I can use for other editing purposes?

All the best,

there is a little utility which will keep your speakers working though you don't hear the action called silenzio.

Just install it and it will keep your speakers happy though you don't hear what it is doing.

Here is a link to it.

A couple things.

firstly am using the real tech audio drivers for the built in sound on the motherboard of my laptop.

I’ve encountered a strange intermittent issue. Every so often I’ve had a problem whereby I’ll be using the laptop and then NVDA will go all crackly. The only way I’ve been able to solve it thus far is to restart the whole thing. Luckily it doesn’t happen that often but when it does it’s most annoying.

The second thing is that every so often and this is regular the soundcard will just switch off. I have my laptop plugged into a bos soundlink mini 2 and after a while unless there’s sound going through it the  laptop sound seems to switch off which results in the speaker turning off. At first I thought it was NVDA being weird but it isn’t. if anybody could assist me with either issues then I would indeed be grateful.

Many thanks.

Add-on Updater 19.05, other add-on releases on their way #addonrelease

Hi all,

In a few hours Add-on Updater 19.05 will hit the air (released). This is a mandatory update that updates NVDA compatibility range.

Speaking of add-on updates, expect updates for the following add-ons in the next few days:

  • Resource Monitor: compatibility range, localization updates
  • SystrayList: compatibility range, localization updates
  • Golden Cursor: one final update from me with localization updates
  • StationPlaylist Studio: compatibility range updates

If its web based then a browser might be the culprit.
If it did work and you now say it won't raise an issue on the nvda issue tracker, its the only way it will be looked into.

Not really.
This is the file for installing the program, so it only needs to be installed once :)
Now, he can very well starts the program separately from Windows, which means that he'll have to run it each time Windows starts, or he can just do what I do and check the option for this program to start along with the Windows itself.
The latter really makes life easier and doesn't slow down the computer in any way that I could notice, so that's what I recommend doing :)

Re: Has anyone used NVDA with WordPress?

I disagree, respectfully. At least it's not NVDA as a whole. I use
NVDA, I looked on your site using it, in fact, because you gave me a
login, (just for clarification to the rest of the list that I didn't
hack into your site :)), & everything was visible that I said in my
post to you via my WordPress4newbs list. I'm not saying your
installation of NVDA on your machine isn't broken. I think it is,
actually. But it's not the norm for NVDA.

I would also say that often merely trying again straight away fixes it. I notice it for example on pages containing adverts where the google server is not fast enough in responding resulting in a page of some data but with bits of it reporting server not found or 404 error in the middle of the text. Its not browser specific, so I imagine its latency when the net is busy.

Do let us know if this stops the sleep issue. I have some friends with this problem, and I was chatting to somebody about an I phone with a similar problem on blue tooth and apparently they have a similar utility to stop that cutting off the start as well. maybe its endemic in some hardware.
As for the crackling well, normally I only see that if the machine is struggling ie using virtual memory on a physical hard drive. This tends to mean either the processor ram or the ram or even the clocking speed is not fast enough to keep up.

I’ll have to stop using it for a while and see. I’ll give about 10 15 minutes then I’ll let you know and write back.

Not at all.
Are you still experiencing the situation described on your first message after installing it?

The second thing is that every so often and this is regular the soundcard will just switch off. I have my laptop plugged into a bos soundlink mini 2 and after a while unless there???s sound going through it the ??laptop sound seems to switch off which results in the speaker turning off. At first I thought it was NVDA being weird but it isn???t.

Darren,
Maybe this problem can be solved with a small application called Silenzio.
It will play continually a WAV file, which will not let your soundcard sleep.
Believe it made my life easier when I found out about this little friend.
Here's the link if you want to try it out. Just install and run it and see the results!

I have NVDA 2019.1.1 On a different machine and I have tried it there with sighted help. The guy couldn''t walk me
through the moderation process. It just didn't make sense from NVDA.

Hello,

I have the latest WordPress, 5.1.1. and NVDA2019.1. I can log in to WordPress, but I can't moderate comments. I find the
link that says xx comments and press enter. It goes to the comments page, but there I am lost. There are supposed to be
check boxess and ddropdown menus, but I can't find them.

Thanks,
John

And yu did not give the link so none of us can test it. Also what browser are you running? I expect to see a full on bug report if able.

Firstly, make sure you have rebooted the computer since updating NVDA (particularly for laptops, since a lot of people simply close the lid rather than shut down Windows).
In addition, if you have Fast Startup enabled, then you need to use Restart to reboot, not Shut down then power your machine back up.  When Fast Startup is enabled doing a Shut down puts your machine into a special hibernation state, it does not shut it down in the conventional sense, which would force Windows 10 to reload from scratch from disc.   Restart always forces Windows 10 to reload, as does a Shut down/power on cycle when Fast Startup is disabled.

Re: Windows 10 mail

Then try again later.   This is an incredibly common error message that means exactly what it says.  If it persists for a very long period, then it's up to you whether you want to try to find the owner of the site and let them know it cannot be loaded and you've been getting the error again and again.
