Re: NVDA Suddenly Silent after latest Win10 Cumulative Update

As a follow-up note on my own experience, I had not realized that when you plug in the HDMI cable Windows automatically switches audio output to the device associated with HDMI (which, of course, it has to do) but that it sometimes does not automatically switch it back to speakers/headphones when the HDMI cable is withdrawn.

I stumbled upon this by accident when I used HDMI again after this last incident.  If I go to the volume control in the system tray and open it, it was still showing the device as HDMI even after the cable was removed.  All I had to do was hit the dropdown for the device in volume control and switch it back to speakers/headphones and all was well.  This would not, however, be something simple for a screen reader user to do if the only output they had would be through the speakers/headphones, as you'd have no speech output to get you there.  Rebooting without the HDMI cable inserted makes the audio automatically redirect to an available device, in this case the speakers/headphones.

NVDA will not recognize my registered Eloquence

Grant Metcalf

I have purchased Eloquence from A T Guys and registered it.  When trying to install it in NVDA I keep getting the message I need to register my copy. When I enter the LicenseKey NVDA seems to be ignoring it and will not active the Eloquence program and voices. It did work during the trial period which has now expired.
QUESTION! What have I and/or my family members done wrong???!!!

Configuration Files

Ed Marquette

In the list of configuration files that comes with NVDA, there is a configuration file called “Proofing.”
It does a great job in identifying various text and other attributes; however, if in Microsoft Word 2013, one uses automatic numbering created by custom-created styles (which I use daily), the paragraph numbers are omitted when reading; however, when reading with the “Normal” or “Default” configuration file activated, the paragraph numbers are read properly.
I suppose the answer to my question is for me to create my own “proof reading” configuration file.
Still, cutting off the automatically generated paragraph numbers seems odd.
I hope that, some day, I can contribute answers to this list instead of just questions.
Thanks for your assistance.

Hi all,
Basically what happened with me is that moment I insert the headset jack into the slot, the sound would stop and not come through the headset.
I had to roll back to old windows and then start using NVDA through the headset.
However, it was working through the system speakers when the headset was removed.
Just sharing my experience after the update.

Re: NVDA Not Reading Contacts in Outlook Distribution List

Quentin Christensen

Hi Abbie,

It is an issue we (and Microsoft) are aware of.  FWIW, it also affects Narrator.

My workarounds:

Several very imperfect workarounds in the interim:

  • Use next / previous object commands to have NVDA read the list. The command will report "selected" for the currently selected contact. As the focus is not correctly following to begin with, using object navigation here always behaves as if "focus moves navigator object" is off.

  • After using the arrow to move through the list, press ALT twice to move to the ribbon and back. The problem is the focus does NOT return to the list, it goes back to the list name, so you need to press TAB to then move back to the list, but then the last item with focus is reported.

I haven't heard an ETA on a fix from Microsoft yet.

Kind regards

Quentin.

Re: Bug in Office 2010?

Quentin Christensen

Hi Adriani,

Is it that the window is appearing but not responsive until you alt+tab away and back?  Or that it takes a little while to appear and it just happens that by the time you alt+tab away and back it has appeared?

This can happen if you have network drives that can take a few seconds to respond.  If you press F12 it should also bring up the same dialog.

If it is the save as dialog, that should be a relatively standard dialog.  If you try opening it from elsewhere such as Notepad, does it respond instantly?

Finally, if you set your NVDA log to "debug", it should show more information and may give some more insight into what is happening.  Press NVDA+control+g to open the NVDA general settings and tab to "log level".

You can access the log with NVDA+F1 and then copy it into an email.

Kind regards

Quentin.

Hello Ralf,

Here is the procedure:

In Total Commander:

Ctrl+f to go to ftp

Tab twice to reach New Connection and press Enter

First edit box should be "Connection Details" (I hope it corresponds, because I have Total Commander in Italian). This
is where ou should enter the connection name for future use.

Tab once to reach Host Name (not readable

Then tab three times, and you reach Username (not readable)

Tab once and you reach Password (it doesn't say Password, but it says something like "Textbox protected"

Tab twice and you'll find another silent textbox; I don't know what it
should be...

Tab again and another silent editbox will appear.

Tab once and there's a button that isn't spoken.

That's all.

I'm using the latest version of Total Commander and the latest Alpha of
NVDA.

hth, and thanks for your work.

I've been in contact with Christian Ghisler, the dev of Total Commander for many years now, and he had explained why
those text boxes cannot be read by screen readers, but I don't remember the technical explanation he gave me.

Oooops, sorry.

I thought pressing Reply instead of Reply All would only send the message to the sender, as on other lists I'm on.

I apologise for this.

Ciao,

Hello Ralf,

Here is the procedure:

In Total Commander:

Ctrl+f to go to ftp

Tab twice to reach New Connection and press Enter

First edit box should be "Connection Details" (I hope it corresponds, because I have Total Commander in Italian). This is where ou should enter the connection name for future use.

Tab once to reach Host Name (not readable

Then tab three times, and you reach Username (not readable)

Tab once and you reach Password (it doesn't say Password, but it says something like "Textbox protected"

Tab twice and you'll find another silent textbox; I don't know what it should be...

Tab again and another silent editbox will appear.

Tab once and there's a button that isn't spoken.

That's all.

I'm using the latest version of Total Commander and the latest Alpha of NVDA.

hth, and thanks for your work.

Hi Ollie,

I'm the author of this addon and use ftp as well. I never missed anything, lol.
Can you give me a step by step description about what text boxes you are speaking and where I can find them? I can then
try to make them read.

Cheers,
   Ralf

Thanks Jarek.

I've installed it, but it doesn't tackle the unreadable edit boxes in FTP. It doesn't really matter, because I'm so used
to them, but it might be difficult for others.

I've been in contact with Christian Ghisler, the dev of Total Commander for many years now, and he had explained why
those text boxes cannot be read by screen readers, but I don't remember the technical explanation he gave me.

Hello Jarek,

I didn't know there was an add-on for Total Commander and NVDA.

It would be interesting to see if it makes some parts of the ftp
connection settings.

Where did you find the add-on, please?

Hello,

I have written an addon for Total Commander 32bit and 64bit.
You can download it here:
https://github.com/Novalis7747/totalcmd-enhanced/raw/master/totalcm
d-0.6.2.nvda-addon

It has some features and it speaks left/right also for the 64bit
version.

Cheers,

Greetings to all
I have both Free Commander and Total Commander installed on my
computer.
I thought Nvda would announce the panels at Total Commander, but it
wasn't.
When I press Nvda + T, only the Total Commander window is reported.
The Tab key does not report panels.
So I want to ask if any of you are using Total Commander, and
whether it will ever be implemented into Nvda by announcing panels
in Total Commander.

Jarek
