NVDACon Asia: Report of Day 1
Dear all, Saturday, 9th of July, 2016 witnessed the first day of the first ever happening of NVDACon Asia on its Teamtalk server as well as through RadioUdaan’s live stream. Listeners and attendees got a chance to tune in to the 1 User General Chat Opener Forum – We discussed about a variety of general subjects related to NVDA, its portability, flexibility, add-ons and even shared our stories of success and how NVDA has impacted our lives. Despite certain technicalities that had to be dealt with during the end of the session, this session served as an excellent kickstarter for the remainder of the conference. 2 Switching from JAWS to NVDA – We had extremely informative and enlightening talks from Ashish Singla followed by Ashik Hirani, who covered and very persuasively convinced many about why NVDA is a competent and viable alternative to commercial options, talking about functionality extensions in the form of add-on packages, NVDA’s accessibility support for many popular applications, the insignificant learning curve between a JAWS to NVDA transition, elucidating all myths and misconceptions people might have in mind along the way. Due to major interest and receipt of questions on this topic, this session had to be significantly extended. 3 Connecting and Contributing to Wider NVDA Communities – In this session, Bhavya Shah and Waqas Ramzan spoke about a variety of simple to complex, little to big, ways and means NVDA users and enthusiasts could contribute towards the progression and proliferation of NVDA, such as joining various NVDA communities, user forums, add-on portals, as well as translating NVDA. The importance of this community-driven screen reader was emphasized and listeners and participants were encouraged to play their part to help. On the whole, Day 1 of NVDACon Asia was hugely successful, with a satisfactory turnout at the Teamtalk server, and over a thousand listeners hearing its live stream. We had fruitful discussions on the first day, which will continue throughout the second day of NVDACon Asia too – 10th of July, 2016. What can you expect from Day 2 of NVDACon Asia is briefly highlighted as follows: Session 4 the BlindHelp Project by the BlindHelp Team – 12:30 p.m. UTC/GMT, 5:30 p.m. Pakistan time, 6:00 p.m. India time, 9:30 p.m. Malaysia time Session 5 Asian Language Reading Tools & Text to Speech Support by Mahesh Khosla – 1:30 p.m. UTC/GMT, 6:30 p.m. Pakistan time, 7:00 p.m. India time, 10:30 p.m. Malaysia time Session 6 Keynote Address by the NVDA India Team – 2:30 p.m. UTC/GMT, 7:30 p.m. Pakistan time, 8:00 p.m. India time, 11:30 p.m. Malaysia time Conference Schedule: www.blindhelp.tk/nvdaconasia/schedule Please do listen to NVDACon Asia live via RadioUdaan (www.radioudaan.com) or by participating directly in our Teamtalk server (instructions at www.blindhelp.tk/nvdaconasia/participate). Re: free CD-burning program that will work well with NVDA
well if its mp3 copy the files in as usual. in win 7 its alt f t you need to find write these files to disk. You can also delete temperary files from that menu to. cdburner xp is donationware and contains no spyware and is what I used for audio it can handle audio, data, dvds, and video disks.

If the download manager is used I think it is in internet explorer, mozilla fire fox google play and maybe more when you start downloading the files you can use the CTRL key + the letter J to bring up your downloads. You might have to tab around or in some cases where the files are up up and down to see what each file is up to. So i do not hear them all at times I will just turn off the progress bars thingy in NVDA with the nvda key + the letter U.
The download manager can usually be found under the tools section in the browsers.
hope this helps.

Is there a way to display a single-cell dot pattern for each level of indentation in Python? It must be Braille, not speech, since I am deaf-blind.

Re: FW: Notes on NVDA and PowerPoint
hi. i have many questions. do you mean that powerpoint is not completely accessible for blinds? or at least its accessibility and kkey strokes with using jaws is better than nvda? i use libreoffice and openoffice and when i press tab to go to different objects, when my reading finish and i press alt+f4 to close the program, it asks me do you want to save the changes? i mean that pressing tab changes the presentations. or do you think that word is the most accessible part of office programs for blind users? i appreciate any help and guide. thanks so much for providing these notes. i copied and saved them in my system. specially sukil and Cearbhall i waite for your guide about my questions. thanks extremely and God bless you all.

NVDA reads the whole slide from top to bottom including the title and leaves the cursor at the bottom of the slide.
1. Press page down and page up to move from slide to slide. Note that it may be necessary to wait for a few seconds between key presses to allow the slide show to catch up;
2. Press numpad 9 and numpad 7 to read the contents of the slide line by line.
3. Press return or space bar to move to the next slide. Sometimes nothing happens and then do the instruction at 4 below.

5. Press control-shift-s to switch back and forth between the slide and its accompanying notes.
6. Use F6 to move between the status bar pane, slide view pane, thumbnails pane and notes pane. Use the arrow keys to move through the options available in each of these panes. Use F6 to move to the chosen view to see the results.

Lidewise, “s” and “d” or “a” have no function. Are these
possibly JAWS commands? I see that JAWS uses a rake of
navigation keystrokes for PowerPoint. However, I am trying
to assemble a tutorial for using NVDA with PowerPoint.

Hi,
You can also press ctrl+F6 or ctrl+shift+F6 to move forth and
back between pannels. And S and D (or was it A and S) also
work to go to the previous and next slide in the slideshow.

The problem is that there is no definite answer for that
question, as I cannot tell you why they fail. It happens in some
tables, and I don't know if in other objects.

Hi,
Me too. And some tables and I believe other objects as well

Re: FW: Notes on NVDA and PowerPoint
Gene, I am using the desktop PC at the moment. That’s a good point about the laptop. I’ll get that under way as well. PowerPoint seems to change radically over the years and keystrokes seem to differ for older versions than those which I am using now. I would be delighted to have the final set of instructions put up on the web but let’s prove them to be accurate first. I am doing this work because I have found the existing pointers (few as they are!) to be incorrect and misleading. Perhaps this is because they relate to older versions. The keystrokes I have listed here work in both JAWS 17 and NVDA for office 2010 and are the recommended ones for Office 2016 so that is hopeful! If members of the list could try out the keystrokes and prove them correct or faulty in their own PC or laptop that would be a great help. Hi,
Use the menu bar to do the tasks, and flat review and object navigation to view some information onscreen.

Hi, Another really good one that I use regularly is CDBurner XP. The title was misleading at first, it led me to believe that it was only built for Windows XP - this is not the case. I have used it with Windows 7 with absolutely no problems whatsoever, and it is still being maintained. This one is at http://cdburnerxp.se/en Hope this helps. Re: FW: Notes on NVDA and PowerPoint
Sukil, I appreciate your taking the trouble to respond. However, I have tried control and F6, etc., as you suggest but they have no function in slide view or slide show modes. Lidewise, “s” and “d” or “a” have no function. Are these possibly JAWS commands? I see that JAWS uses a rake of navigation keystrokes for PowerPoint. However, I am trying to assemble a tutorial for using NVDA with PowerPoint. All the best, Cearbhall m +353 (0)833323487 Ph: _353 (0)1-2864623 e: cearbhall.omeadhra@...
