Re: how do you access screen notifications with NVDA?

Antony Stone

I didn't think there ever was a released version of Windows eight - Microsoft
went directly from Windows 7 to Windows 10 - or am I missing something here?

If i remember right in the whats new in the beta snap shots there is mention of support for newer versions of it.

This is coming out in NVDA 2019 that it says it.

Hi there.
as I was using Jaws 2018.1712, I came across something pretty strange.
Jaws couldn't recognize Java access Bridge at all. I did everything
and installed it correctly. but as I hit Java control panel in my
Control panel, it wasn't able to recognize and support the window.
simultaneously, there was nothing wrong with NVDA. it could easily
recognize the JAB. then, I had access to another cracked version of
Jaws 2018, and fortunately, it solved the problem. as I went ahead and
updated my windows to version 1903 and Jaws to that of 2019 March
update. unfortunately, the same problem took place again. I updated
Jaws 2019 to April version. but the same problem was still there. I
should also mention that I had updated Java to the latest version
before I updated my windows 10 to version 1903. just like before,
there's no problem with NVDA 2019.1.1, it can easily recognize Java
access bridge. but Jaws can't. It does seem strange to me. I'll be
grateful, if you share your great and useful experiences with me.
all the best.
Take care.

Re: Getting your Windows Version

Giles Turnbull

related to this, any time info such as version numbers is required, I start up NVDA's speach viewer (in the tools menu) so whatever is spoken aloud can be copied and pasted from the speech viewer window.

That means you don't have to try and remember a string of numbers, or navigate the dialog box with object navigation to listen to it again, and it will print NVDA's version number in the correct format rather than the date format, even if that's what your NVDA voice synth is speaking (mine says "January 1st 2019" but the speech window records it as "Version: 2019 .1 . ... I've put additional spaces before the decimal points to stop it being spoken in date format).

And the same works with the winver dialog :)

Re: Query about Gmail using chrome with NVDA

Pretty much exactly like you create it, and I'm presuming we're not talking about a Gmail system label like Inbox, Sent, Chat, etc., which can be hidden, but not deleted.

Once you're in Settings, Labels then use screen reader search to find the Create new label button.  This is positioned in the label table just above the entries for user created labels. Then I start navigating down the first column of the table until I hit the label I'm interested in (one could search for it, too).  Once I'm on that label's line, I navigate across the columns until I hit the "Remove" action, which deletes the label when activated.

Removing a label does not delete any messages to which the label is assigned.  You would have to do that first, before removing the label.  When a label is removed the messages that had only that label assigned end up back in your Inbox.

Joseph Lee's add-ons: update rollout in progress #addonrelease

Hi all,

Many of my add-ons are receiving updates today (for some, you’ll notice version jumps, but don’t worry). Specifically, users of following add-ons will see an update today:

  • Add-on Updater (19.06): registers new add-ons added to the community website.
  • Easy Table Navigator (1.5): compatibility with alpha/beta snapshots.
  • Enhanced Touch Gestures (19.05.1): compatibility with alpha/beta snapshots.
  • Golden Cursor (3.6): compatibility with alpha/beta snapshots.
  • Object Location Tones (19.05.1): compatibility with alpha/beta snapshots.
  • ObjPad (19.05.1): compatibility with alpha/beta snapshots.
  • SystrayList (3.5): compatibility with alpha/beta snapshots.
  • Virtual Review (2.7): compatibility with alpha/beta snapshots.

Several important notes:

  1. These add-ons will be released in stages, so hopefully all of them should see the updates in the next few hours.
  2. Add-ons marked for compatibility with alpha/beta snapshots received manifest updates. I will not declare these as officially compatible with 2019.2 until beta 1 is released (although those of you using beta snapshots are running code that is similar to alpha builds at the moment).

Cheers,

Joseph

Has anyone else noticed a change in the behavior of Focus Highlight?

Or, perhaps more accurately, have your sighted assistant(s), as we're the ones that rely on this add-on.  It could be an NVDA change, too

Up until very recently, virtually everything generally defaulted to being in browse mode when I opened it, generally with the "thick red line" which indicates that you're in browse mode and the navigator object and focus object are one and the same.  This was particularly true when I landed on File Explorer (as a whole) and items in the list which I display using Details View.  It was also generally true in many other places.

For the last few days, everything seems to be opening in focus mode that used to be opening in browse mode, and what's weirder is I can't get the mode to toggle.  I was trying to play with doing a multi-file select with individual files in File Explorer, and could not get NVDA+space to shift me back to focus mode so I could select, move along then CTRL+select (spacebar), etc.

Even the buttons in dialogs are shown as being in focus mode when I land on them, e.g., the Winver Close button.

I am running Windows 10, Version 1809, Build 17763.529  and NVDA 2019.1.1 and Focus Highlight 6.0.  This is really peculiar, and definitely not what I've been used to.

Re: Converting PDF to Word

Quentin,

I'm well aware of the issue with image PDFs.  There are so many in existence that they'll be landing in peoples' laps for decades to come.

I have mentioned Tracker Software's PDF-XChange Viewer as an excellent OCR tool.  It's not fully accessible overall, but the OCR function is, and it supports English, Spanish, French, & German "as shipped" and you can get, also at no cost, various Language Extension Packages that cover many, many more.

Here's the post in the archives where I give the step-by-step instructions for doing OCR with PDF-XChange Viewer.   OCR/PDF software is something, much like screen readers, where having minimal proficiency with more than one can pull one's proverbial bacon out of the fire.
