Hi Adriani

Now you have a date for it are you going to put the message on the main site? I can re direct the link to where your message is from off my website to the NVDA.com page where it is.

That way also you might get people putting there hands up instead of a email that can be deleted. I guess they both have there pros and cons.

Just ass on the link once you know what you are doing.

Re: Strange affect on NVDA voices after Win10 update on 14 June 2019

I'm no wiser how it happened but the problem has been fixed! I deduced it was either a problem with the soundcard, the soundcard driver or the actual laptop speakers. I plugged a pair of headphones into a USB soundcard and the problem went away. I unplugged the USB soundcard and the problem returned.

So I then plugged a pair of headpones into the laptop's headphone socket to see whether it was a speaker problem or a soundcard / driver problem. The sound was fine through the headpones.

what happened next I cannot explain but the speaker sound went back to how it normally is! I'm delighted that the problem has fixed itself! :)

What did an nvda/f1 show?
I ask as the last time I saw something like this it was a machine which avast anti virus had been removed from and the only way I got it to work was reinstall windows and then put the back ups back in.

Did it work in the previous version of nvda, cos if it  did I doubt this is the problem as mine did not.
Just a thought.

Not all sound devices support the enhancements tab, so it doesn't always show up.
Some Realtech drivers on laptops, for example.

If that doesn't do anything, or makes your audio sound awful, you can always check it again.

Let me explain what is happening.
Yesterday I had a friend visit who had never heard a screen reader before, so I demonstrated my NVDA using the Microsoft SAPI 5 voice Zira. I also changed the symthesizer to the E-Speak one and used the Lancashire voice before changing back to SAPI5 / Zira.
Windows also picked yesterday to do an automatic update. I am now running Windows 10 Version 1803 (OS Build 17134.829)
What is happening is that the volume using the Microsoft SAPI5 voices Zira and David are flucuating wildly in volume. I do have NVDA set to duck when outputing speech and sounds but even when I turn ducking off I'm still getting very large spikes in volume when typing.
For example, as I am typing this it was at my usual nice listening volume but then I went into the NVDA menu to look at the speech settings again, and the volume in the menu jumped and got much harsher (Zira is quite a soft voice at my usual listening volume). I pressed ESC to come out of the settings and it remained loud and harsh for several bits of typing before settling back down to the mor normal volume level. Let me see how long it takes for the volume to rise again ... and it is already harsher and louder ... and will drob down and softer now. It's all very strange! I am writing this in Notepad.
I recorded the Zira voice reading most of that previous sentence and it still sounds exactly the same as in the recording, it starts at a comfortable listening volume and quicly gets louder and more abrasive..
Can anybody tell from the recording (link here with the url broken up with three spaces so it works on the NVDA group webpage) what might be happening.
http:// gilesturnbullpoet.com /wp-content/uploads/ 2019/06/NVDA-post-Win-update.mp3
It is most likely that I have inadvertenly changed a voice setting (though all settings seem as they normally are), or that the Windows update has tweeked something in the SAPI5 and Core1 voices, or has upset something in my Dell Latitude laptop sound drivers.
I'd be extremely grateful for any ideas that I can try to fix this problem.

Re: office 365 and nvda: save dialogue

Rick

Hello Daniel:

I am assuming that you are talking about the Save As dialog, which is displayed when pressing Control+S on a new, unsaved document. The behavior of Control+S has changed starting in Office 2013. To get the traditional Save As dialog, press F12 instead.

It is possible to turn off the new Save as tab, also called the "Backstage", and only use the traditional dialog box.

To change this, press Alt+F, then T to open the Word options dialog. Once the dialog opens, press Control+Tab until you hear Save. Then press Tab multiple times until you hear, " Don't show the Backstage when opening or saving files with keyboard shortcuts" and make sure this is checked.

Rick

Subject: [nvda] office 365 and nvda: save dialogue

Hi all,

This may be slightly off-topic for this list. It is however a brief question, so I hope will be resolved rather quickly.

I've recently upgraded from office 2010 to 365, and now notice that the save dialogue has changed.

Instead of a traditional save dialogue, I am now presented with various groupings of folders such as recents, accessed through the ribbon. Even pressing enter on a folder such as documents doesn't yield the save dialogue, I have to tab over several times until I find the button of this folder name to click on. I'm just wondering if there is a way to change this behaviour?

Many thanks,

Daniel

But it doesn’t read the contente of this section.

Is it a bug?

Re: Reddit with NVDA

Hope,
Thanks for this! Downloaded the extension :)

I would love to play a bit with Greasemonkey but I don't know much of what it's about.
If you have the patience to explain a little bit of it so that I can get started, I'd love it.
As this is offtopic for the list we could move it to the chat subgroup or even to private if you want.
Of course I don't want to bug you, so if you aren't in the mood for it I'll perfectly understand :)

Thanks again!

Cheers,

You need to go to old.reddit.com every time you want to use this. There are scripts and extensions for various browsers that will do this automatically for you, depending on which browser you use. I personally have this user script installed: https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/40897-old-reddit-please you’ll need an extension like greasemonkey to install these kind of scripts. There’s also this extension for Firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/old-reddit-redirect/

The new chromium based edge browser crashing or closing

hurrikennyandopo ...

Hi guys

Has any one noticed in the last couple of days when you go to use the new chromium based edge browser it seems to close or crash then closes.  Even if you do a alt/tab it does not show in the task bar. You use it for a little bit then it does it again.

it did not used  to do it but i thin with the dev channel it updated early on this week. I do have the log which i can paste into this email.

It used to go quite well before that so some thing has changed.

I am using the latest beta shot of nvda alog with windows 1903. I think it also crashes with the stable version of nvda 2019.1.1 as well

I can post the log in if i hear it is more than just me.
