Re: NVDA and Microsoft Edge
Also, at this point in time, there is nearly dead Edge, which isn't worth dedicating any effort on, and being born Chromium-based Edge, which is handled quite well by screen readers, as it is built on the same foundation as the Google Chrome web browser.
If you're interested in Edge, then you are better off using the development version, which will likely go to production in the second feature update of 2019, or use Chrome instead for the time being, as it's so similar. If you want the direct download link for the Development (Dev) channel Chromium-based Edge, this is it: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=2084648&Channel=Dev&language=en-us&Consent=0&IID=0e01823b-e21a-5c47-9974-3e94850ff9d4 That link takes you directly to download, as I've already consented to license terms before copying it. If you activate this you should immediately have a Save dialog presented for the Dev Edge installer. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 1809, Build 17763 Puritanism: The haunting fear that someone, somewhere, may be happy. ~ H.L. On Edge and Firefox I have to let it read the entire page and cannot stop it or go back to anything else it won’t read anything else. On IE I can at least read things if I stop it reading, but it’s still not 100%
I’m beginning to think I have a virus that is just messing with everything. I’ll do some checking and update later today. Thanks for the advice Gene!

Your message implies that you have tried other browsers. What happens when you use NVDA with most browsers. What you describe isn't expected behavior and may require technical analysis to try to determine what is causing the problem. Also, the frequency of crashes you are having with JAWS indicates that there may be a problem with your system that needs to be resolved.

I’m sure this has been discussed before, but can anyone tell me how to get Edge to work with NVDA again? I really miss Edge and I can’t get NVDA to work on anything but IE, I hate IE. Jaws is an option, but crashes on me at least twice a day and frankly I’m tired of it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Sarah

Rayn Darren <rayndarren@...>
You can also use Notepad++ but do not get the latest version as it isn’t compatible with NVDA. The version, at least the one I use on a regular basis for python and json btw, is version 7.6.

This is a good opportunity to remind people who
don't do so, that when presenting a problem, what is being used and what is done
that causes the problem should be reported.
I doubt you can do anything about this. At
times, information is sent to NvdA that it reads automatically and this speech
isn't related to progress updates. Even if they are off, the information
is spoken. In this case, as I recall, if you leave the window, you won't
hear it. So just don't stay in the window when you don't want to hear the
status of the download.
This appears to be a problem introduced into
quantum Firefox. I don't recall it existing before quantum.

I can't help you with your question, but I do want to point out that it is not off-topic. Questions regarding which programs/utilities/etc. are accessible using NVDA are definitely on-topic for this group. The group description now reads, in part, "Questions about which programs are accessible using NVDA, NVDA add-ons, and configuring Braille displays for use with NVDA are also permitted."
If the discussion were about how to code in Python, what the structure of a JSON file is, or similar, that would be off-topic but would also be perfectly appropriate for the chat subgroup. I hope that some of our members that are also Python coders will have some suggestions for you. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 1809, Build 17763 Puritanism: The haunting fear that someone, somewhere, may be happy. ~ H.L. Re: Elements not being reported with NVDA
Luke,
Yes, there is a way to read these, though it is inconvenient.Actually, not inconvenient at all. Using the laptop keyboard it's easy peasy :) Far from perfect, which would be just land on a link and hear what it's about, but nothing impossible at all. It's really weird and I never would have thought of something like that. How did you find it out? You might want to have a look through the issues here, and if this one isn't described anywhere (it's not on the first page of results, but there are a few), post a new one.Hmmm, I've never dealt with GitHub before. I'll probably do it but I don't know when. Thanks for your answer. It's definitely appreciated! :) Cheers, Marcio AKA Starboy Sent from a galaxy far, far away. --Are you a Thunderbird user? Re: Elements not being reported with NVDA
Luke Davis
Yes, there is a way to read these, though it is inconvenient.
Select the link (k or tab or whatever), and enter focus mode (NVDA-space). then read to end of current text (numpad plus on desktop keyboard mode), or use current and next line commands (8-9 on numpad, desktop mode) to read the current text. Then NVDA-space or escape to get back out of focus mode. This is not the only aria-label issue currently extant, but I don't think I've seen this one mentioned specifically. You might want to have a look through the issues here, and if this one isn't described anywhere (it's not on the first page of results, but there are a few), post a new one. https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues?utf8=%E2%9C%93&q=is%3Aissue+is%3Aopen+aria-label&=&=&=&= I tried it in FF and Chrome, and got the same results as you. Re: Question about NVDA Beta Version
Quentin,
Thanks so much, now I understood it!
Now, the last question: if for some reason a new beta appear before a stable version, what will happen? That is, suppose I have the beta 1 for the 2019.2 version. If for some reason a new beta is needed, will I get this beta automatically since this isn't a stable version yet? Again, thanks a lot :) Cheers, Marcio AKA Starboy Sent from a galaxy far, far away. --Are you a Thunderbird user? Re: Question about NVDA Beta Version
Quentin Christensen
Hi Marcio, you hadn't noticed it before, because it's a new process :) Because we only release beta versions in the lead-up to a new stable version (unlike alpha builds, which we release every few days, or sometimes several in a day), we had made it so the beta version automatically rolls over to the final stable version when it comes out. So, if you install 2019.2beta1, when the final 2019.2 comes out, your beta version will update to that version. If you don't do anything else, you're back on the "stable" channel, and you'll next update to 2019.3 when it comes out. If you want to try beta versions of 2019.3, you'll need to download the beta when it comes out, and either run it as a temporary / portable copy, or install it, in which case the process will be the same (it will update to the stable version when it comes out). If you want to test the more bleeding edge code, you can install the alpha builds, and they will keep updating to the latest alpha build - they won't change channels on you. So, in summary - there's no branch which will automatically update you from the beta builds of 2019.2 to the beta builds of 2019.3 when it comes out, you'll need to keep an eye on our announcements and download the first beta you want to try of any given release. What we are hoping, is that this change will make it easier for people to try out the beta versions, knowing they will be automatically updated to the stable version when it comes out without needing to do anything extra at that time. Regards Quentin.

Question about NVDA Beta Version
Hi,
I'm thinking about going back to the NVDA Beta Version. Currently, I'm on the "official" channel. Before I can think more about it I have a question. I was reading this edition of NVDA In Process and I just noticed something that I haven't noticed before. If you install the beta version, when the final NVDA 2019.2 comes out, it will update to that version automatically. In the lead up to NVDA 2019.3, you will need to manually download a new beta once one is released, if you wish.Does it mean then that starting with NVDA Beta 2019.3 I won't get automatic updates anymore? Sorry for asking it now but I really
haven't noticed this detail before and today the question just
came up.
I'll love to be an NVDA Beta user again :) just don't feel like downloading a new version all the time. It would be way better if it could update by itself as it is with all the other versions. Cheers, Marcio AKA Starboy Sent from a galaxy far, far away. --Are you a Thunderbird user? Then join the Thunderbird mailing list to help and be helped with all Thunderbird things - questions, features, add-ons and much more!
