Re: screen curtain

Kerryn,
how do you  asign keystroke mannually
From the userguide:

11.2.3. Input Gestures

In this dialog, you can customize the input gestures (keys on the keyboard, buttons on a braille display, etc.) for NVDA commands.
Only commands that are applicable immediately before the dialog is opened are shown. For example, if you want to customize commands related to browse mode, you should open the Input Gestures dialog while you are in browse mode.
The tree in this dialog lists all of the applicable NVDA commands grouped by category. You can filter them by entering one or more words from the command's name into the Filter by edit box in any order. Any gestures associated with a command are listed beneath the command.
To add an input gesture to a command, select the command and press the Add button. Then, perform the input gesture you wish to associate; e.g. press a key on the keyboard or a button on a braille display. Often, a gesture can be interpreted in more than one way. For example, if you pressed a key on the keyboard, you may wish it to be specific to the current keyboard layout (e.g. desktop or laptop) or you may wish it to apply for all layouts. In this case, a menu will appear allowing you to select the desired option.
To remove a gesture from a command, select the gesture and press the Remove button.
When you are finished making changes, press the OK button to save them or the Cancel button to discard them.

If you need more help with it please let me know :)

Cheers,

Which version of NVDA and Office are you using?  The problem you've described was an issue for a number of versions of each, caused by a change from Microsoft.  It was fixed earlier this year, but if you're running an older build you may still experience it.

If you can't update, the workaround was to open Excel's options (ALT+F, then T), press CONTROL+TAB until the focus moved down to "Advanced", then press ALT+E to uncheck "Allow editing directly in cells".

Quentin.

There is a huge formula in a cell.
I want to delete part of the formula by selecting and deleting part of that formula.
NVDA does not read while I am selecting the characters and words of this formula.
Can some one guide on this?
This is currently on office computer. Have to check what happens on the home computer.
But need solution for office computer now.

Hi all,

Before I continue, I would like to request that you contact me privately should you have any questions about the following group (permission granted by list owner):

Those of you using BrailleNote from HumanWare (Classic, PK, mPower, Apex, Touch, and Touch Plus) may have heard of a list called BrailleNote Users (BNU for short). Until a few days ago this forum was hosted on Freelists. After consulting members of that list, I (the BrailleNote Users forum creator and list admin) decided to move that forum to Groups.IO, similar to what happened to the current NVDA list several years ago. Compared to 2012 when the Freelists forum began, the Groups.IO forum (which has just launched) simplifies the subscription process, actively monitored and moderated by Humanware people, and most importantly, led by a world-renown expert on BrailleNote and NVDA (yours truly); so in a sense, you’ll get the best of both NVDA and BrailleNote worlds.

To subscribe, send an email to braillenote+subscribe@groups.io.

Again if you have any questions, please contact me directly. Thank you.

Cheers,

Joseph

Re: Joseph Lee's add-ons: getting ready for 19.07 #addonrelease

Hi,

For people using Windows 10 App Essentials: version 19.07 will be the second to last add-on release for people using Windows 10 Version 1803 (April 2018 Update/build 17134). I can grant a one-time extension until end of August, and no more after that.

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi all,

Besides preparing to transition from a BrailleNote Apex to a BrailleNote Touch Plus and promoting the newly modernized BrailleNote Users group on Groups.IO, I’m preparing to release several add-on updates throughout this weekend:

  • Add-on Updater 19.07: registers Character Information add-on.
  • Resource Monitor 19.07: Psutil 5.6.3 and localization updates.
  • StationPlaylist 19.07: changes and bug fixes, also 18.09.10-LTS will hit the air at the same time.
  • Windows 10 App Essentials 19.07: changing the behavior of volume/brightness change announcement in Version 1903, ability to track specific events and/or events in specific apps and so on.

Note that starting from version 19.07, add-on name for StationPlaylist Studio has been renamed to StationPlaylist to reflect the fact that the add-on now supports more than Studio.

The new add-on updates will be released throughout this weekend as follows:

  • June 22nd: Add-on Updater 19.07
  • June 23rd: Windows 10 App Essentials 19.07
  • June 24th: StationPlaylist 19.07/18.09.10-LTS, Resource Monitor 19.07

For SPL and WinTenApps, a corresponding development snapshot builds will be released.

Cheers,

Joseph

Serious question:  What PDF-to-Text Add-On?

I can't find one (or even the word PDF) on either the official or under development add-ons page.

Can we see the article in question? because comma is the appropriate key--it moves to the end of the current container. So it generally skips past the current list/table.

Therefore, if you're really in a list, it shouldn't jump to the end of the article.

I don't remember downloading the app. But, once you download and install it, alt N, then to tools, to manage add on, down to screen curtain, then tab to the check box or button.

By default, this add-on hasn't any keystroke assigned to trigger its function. So you need to assign it manually through the Input Gesture option.
By the way it would be nice to have this dialog when using it for the first time. I mean, the add-on by itself could ask for a keystroke to be assigned. It would be way easier and way more intuitive.

In regard to my own response to this topic, "Oops, my bad!!"  I had been looking at the Win10 for Screen Reader Users group and forgotten I'd shifted to NVDA.

This topic is not related to NVDA or using it in any way, and is now locked.

And since the ribbon interface has been the de facto standard for well over a decade, it behooves any Windows user to know exactly how to use it (and it's not difficult at all).

Not knowing how to use any operating system's native interface, particularly if layering assistive tech on top of it, is just asking for trouble in the long run when confronted with using a machine other than one's own.   I was once the "king of customizations" way back, but when I finally recognized that this completely crippled most of my clients if they were put in front of a "standard machine" with the screen reader they were already familiar with I stopped.  The best outcome is having an individual be able to sit down at any random computer (presuming Windows here) with the screen reader they're familiar with and be able to use it almost as though it were their own, which means hewing to the standard interface (within reason, we all make some tiny tweaks to suit our preferences using settings provided by the OS).
